You may find it difficult to view the contents of your mobile phones under direct sun light. This is a common problem faced by most of the phone users due to the light reflection and contrast on the phone LCD. In order to tackle this, Samsung recently unveiled a new qVGA LCD with auto brightness adjustment targeting for high-end mobile devices.

The new invention has a temperature and light sensor embedded in LCD driver IC that is able to sense the environment and lightness of surrounding and convert its measurement to pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals. The signal will then trigger the LCD backlight LEDs to the optimum reading contrast based on the surrounding environment change.

As Samsung phone is famous in slim design, the LCD utilizes the adaptive brightness control (ABC) technology that has the circuit sensors embedded directly onto the display panel, saving the whole stack up thickness while reducing the power consumption for the LCD display.

Expect to see this LCD built into the latest mobile phones in Q2’07.
