How to Fix COM Surrogate Problem When Opening Video Format Files

Many Windows Vista users probably have this problem quite frequently. Sometimes if they open a folder which contains video-format files such as MPEG or AVI files, it’s annoying to encounter an error message prompted out as follows: “COM Surrogate has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” The message won’t go away even when users have closed the program. The error message will keep prompting out unless and until users close the relevant folder.

It is quite irritating and frustrating especially if you are rushing to finish something. The reason why this error message pops out is mainly because users probably have installed some media player applications such as Nero, DivX, KMPlayer, etc whereby the common files in these applications are not compatible with Windows Vista. To fix the problem of the COM Surrogate stop working in Vista, the easier and possible solution is to uninstall these incompatible programs or update them to the very latest version. Alternately, you also could try out the following solution:

  1. Press elevated command prompt with administrator privileges.
  2. Type in regsvr32 %windir%/System32/vbscript.dll and press Enter.
  3. The system will pop out a dialog message showing “DLL Register Server in C:\Windows\System32/vbscript.dll has been successful”.
  4. Then go to Organize Menu, choose Folder and Search Option, then go to View tab. Check the Always show icons, never thumbnails item.

  • The divx codecs is the problem it’s not read by vista

    1. Just uninstall divx

    2. uninstall and all codecs.

t===he divx codec in the divx package corrupts the codecs and vista can’t read it after corrupting it==

    3. reinstall codecs but not the one from divx.

!!!!!but don’t use an divx codecs!!!!!

just install the divx PLAYER Only!

====Don’t install the divx codec when installing divx player ==

NO divx codec the problem is the divx codec not compatible or conflicting with windows vista. i wouldnt recommend going to system as changing settings it is dangerous

ITS WORKING MAN!!! REALLY VERY HAPPY!!!

Thanks for such a useful information…

  • Cheers, worked first time

  • It says that the module failed to load

  • For all of you having trouble saying it cant find filename or whatever, put a space after "regsvr32" so there is a space between the '32' and the '%', turns out thats what i was doing wrong. Hope this helps :)

  • ALSO, THERE IS A SPACE IN THE CODE THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED.

    its here:

    regsvr32 %windir%/System32/vbscript.dll

    ^is a space right there

  • You type in the code in command prompt.

Then you open the folder with the problems.

UNDER THE BACK BUTTON ON THE EXPLORER THERE IS A BUTTON, CALLED ORGINIZE!

    FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS ABOVE

  • and how do i get to the organize menu? I'm stumped.

  • Ok so i have tried this several times. time and time again i get the same message "The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect." what am i doing wrong? Please help me! I'm about ready to give up and just buy a Mac.

I can't fix the problem,….I think maybe a system restore or something's the only way I can think of fixing it seeing how it only started a few days ago and a few buddies of mine said they had it for a while now…..damn windows Vista and it's bugs -.-

  • Thanks for the tips. It worked for me fine.

  • yeh i have the problemand for me it just keeps getting worse

ive tried this and every other fix

  • Heya – it said the file name, directory or volume is not correct??? help

  • Worked a treat- thanks for that as it was really annoying!!

  • for evryone that is kinda idiot just do like this ITS REAL SIMPLE! start open the start menu SEARCH FOR "CMD" right clck it run as admin then u type this code "regsvr32 %windir%/System32/vbscript.dll " without the "'s the press enter and it will say u succsed if u done it right its not harder than that

It even comes up when you browse the folders and the system has to create thumbnails. i give up have this problem now for long time.
