How to Change Owner Name in Windows XP

Have you ever wonder how can you change your registered owner name in Windows XP after the first time installation? Some of you may have faced this problem as and when if there is a change to the owner name or it was mis-spelled when the you did the OS (Operating System) installation for the first time. Not to worry to have to redo all the installation over again, now with few simple steps as drafted below, it will allow you to change the owner name even after computer installation was completed.

1) Go to Start -> Run, then type regedit and hit Enter.

2) Locate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version.

3) On the right panel, double click on RegisteredOwner, then modify the value to the name as you preferred. You can also change the organization name as well by double clicking on RegisteredOrganization and change the value.

4) Restart your computer to take the effect of the changes.

Once your computer restarted, you will notice the registered owner or organization has been changed to the new name under system properties (right click on My Computer, then choose Properties under General tab).

The registry hack also works to change owner and org name in most Windows.

  • I attempted using procedure above thru instruntion #2, …. "Current Version";

    The right side panel was "Blank". I Right-Clicked on Current Version, and

    the right side panel "Populated".

    I was able to change the Registered Owner successfully.

    Thanks for your helpful information/page.

  • Doesn't work on my machine; the indicated keys do not appear in the listed folder, and could not be found with a search.

  • I wrote a program to change the registry entries so you don’t have to muck about in the registry. Works for Windows XP and VISTA. However with windows vista you must right click on the program and select ‘Run as Administrator’ or the program won’t have sufficient access to the registry.
