Google has launched the Chrome Web Store, which intends to be one-stop online shopping marketplace and download front for its Chrome web browser and Chrome OS. Chrome Web Store contains free and paid installable web apps, extensions (which are currently listed in Google Chrome Extensions page) and themes for Google Chrome.

  • Apps – Web apps are advanced interactive websites with a wide-ranging set of features or focus on a single task like photo-editing or shopping. Installed web apps can be accessed through shortcuts in Chrome’s New Tab page.

  • Extensions – Google Chrome web browser users should be familiar with extensions, which is used to add new features to the browser.

  • Themes – Themes allow you to you customize the look and feel of web browser.

Installable web apps can be separated to two categories: hosted apps and packaged apps. Hosted apps are websites with some extra metadata, features or functions, mimicking installation on browser; while packaged apps are downloadable web apps that may use the Chrome Extension APIs. The apps can be a games running on the browser. Currently, all web apps are of CRX extensions for Chrome, though Google may introduces CRX-less hosted web apps which can be used in any and all web browsers in future.
