Windows Phone 7 does not support Internet tethering by default. And that means that WP7 phone user cannot access the Internet from computer through 3G or 2G data connection on Windows Phone 7 as modem. However, hackers have managed to hack the Windows Phone 7 in order to turn on Internet tethering support for almost every models of WP7 in the market, including LG Windows Phone 7, Samsung Windows Phone 7, Dell Venue Pro WP7 and the latest hacked is WP7 devices from HTC.

Follow the step-by-step guide below for the trick to turn the HTC Windows Phone 7 mobile device into a 3G data modem that allows computer to tether on it to browse the web.

For the hack to work, HTC Windows Phone 7 must be unlocked with ChevronWP7.

  1. Download XAP file in DFRouter.zip from xda-developers.com.

    Alternative download link: DFRouter.zip.

  2. Download and install HTC Sync for Android from HTC for USB Modem driver.

    Or download the HTC device driver extracted from HTC Sync directly:

    32-bit (x86) Driver: HTC BMP USB Driver x86.zip
    64-bit (x64) Driver: HTC BMP USB Driver x64.zip

  3. Deploy DFRouter.XAP file to your phone.
  4. Turn off data connection in your phone.
  5. Run DFRouter and click on “HTC Modem”.
  6. Connect the HTC WP7 device to PC>
  7. Open Device Manager on PC. 2 unknown devices will be shown. Select the device that has the following ID:

    USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0EFF&REV_0000&MI_01

    Then, update device with the HtcUsbMdmV32 for 32-bit OS or HtcUsbMdmV64 for 64-bit OS driver which can be found automatically by Windows if you installed HTC Sync, or manually point to the extracted driver location to get official HTC USB Modem.

  8. Open Device Manager on PC. 2 unknown devices will be shown. Select the device that has the following ID:

    USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0EFF&REV_0000&MI_00

    Then, update device with the HtcVComV32 for 32-bit OS or HtcVComV64 for 64-bit OS driver which can be found automatically by Windows if you installed HTC Sync, or manually point to the extracted driver location to get official HTC Diagnostic Interface (COM8).

  9. Edit the HTC USB Modem properties and go to Advanced tab, and then add in the following additional command:

    +CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”APN

    Replace APN with the actual APN name of your mobile carrier.

  10. Create a new dial-up connection with the HTC USB Modem, with the number to dial as *99# without any user name and password.
  11. Your computer is now connected to Internet via HTC Windows Phone 7.

Important: Click “Zune Mode” on DFRouter to return back to Zune Sync. Do not uninstall DFRouter before revert back to Zune Mode.
