Download Windows 7 SP1 Virtual PC (Refresh Version)

The Windows Virtual PC is the free virtualization software for Windows 7 which allows user to setup a virtual machine to run more than one operating system at the same time on one computer, and to run legacy productivity application software on a virtual Windows XP Mode environment which otherwise does not compatible with Windows 7 system.

With the release of Windows 7 SP1, Microsoft has updated and refreshed Windows Virtual PC to support Windows 7 SP1 as guest operating system. The refreshed version of Windows Virtual PC with version number of 6.1.7600.16393 supports the following Host and Guest Operating systems:

  • Host: Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise.
  • Guest: Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) Professional, Windows Vista Enterprise Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Ultimate Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Vista Business Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 7 Enterprise.

The new version of Windows Virtual PC can be downloaded from its official homepage or through Microsoft Download Center. Both requires Windows to be validated as genuine. If you want to skip the validation process, just download using the following direct download links.

Windows Virtual PC Official Direct Download Links

32-bit (x86): Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu (15.3MB)
64-bit (x64): Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu (16.3MB)

Windows XP Mode, a free pre-installed and pre-activated Windows XP SP3 virtual machine, has no change and can still be downloaded. If you haven’t upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 and the system has no hardware virtualization, download the patch to disable hardware VT requirement of Windows Virtual PC.

  • MS keeps building crap like nobody else. I tried to install WIN XP Mode on WIN 7 SP1 machine (in BIOS as required: Virtual Ext is enabled, Execute Disable Bit is set). Afetr full reboot I am not able to see WIN XP MODE or VIRTUAL PC anywhere in ALL PROGRAMS or elswhere. Who works at this company – thay can't do the simplest things properly ! At least MS should have allowed shops to sell PCs with XP installed insted of the crap WIN 7. It really sucks !

  • I'm using VirtualBox for virtual OS, but btw, thank for sharing <3

  • Well… Irv Spalten… true It's because Microshaft thinks only Busineses will need XP mode for older software in buisness use… but it's usefull for home use too… But I don't recomend XP Mode anyway as the image of the V PC has loads of things blocked on it like Mediaplayer etc… best to create your own V PC… or use Virtual Box as it has 3d support etc… Virtual PC is good as it integrates well with windows in explorer etc…

  • Fg, I really was surprised to see the Home Prem. choice in the D/L and in this article as HOSTS… so I went for it, knowing full well it wasn't for H.P. before. I thought maybe with SP1 the requirement had changed.

I run Oracle's Virtual Box now but I was hoping the MS VM would work better (not that I'm having any problems with Oracle's)?

I just don't understand the reason for even allowing the d/l for versions that can't run it?

  • Yea it is true it does go into start menu etc… But windows XP Mode only works in window 7 Professional and ultimate editons… if you are running either of them XP mode should download the XP Virtual image automatically all 500meg of it… the only other way to get XP Mode without Pro or ultimate…. is to create a new Virtual pc and install Windows XP from a full XP CD, there are a few hacks online you can do to get windows 7 to download XP mode but I can't say if they work or not…

  • Fg, are you sure? According to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/get-s… you find it on your start menu?

I just got it again and installed it again (I had removed it).

I get the dialog box with "Windows XP Mode cannot be set up

Windows XP Mode is not available on the edition of Windows."

followed by a link to upgrade to an edition that does.

I did find the files on disk in C:PROGRAM FILES and the Tutorial was there and I started it. Didn't like Home Prem or Starter version but all the higher one. Basically I don't think it finished installing?

  • Irv Spalten, Because it integrates itself into windows 7 exploer and the right click menu… it doesn't put a program icon onto desktop or start menu… I think it goes into right click menu… new

  • Followed this article and went to the MS link. When I went to d/l the files, before that is asked for my W7 version. I have Home Prem. and XP Mode never was part of it. To my amazement it WAS listed, just like in this article. Got the files, did the install and at the end was told I couldn't run it!!! Could NOT find the files it installed ANYWHERE, but Add/Remove had it listed so I removed it.

    What goes?
