Sony Announces First New Blu-Ray Players Since the Fall of HD DVD

Sony will debut first new player Blu-ray by this summer that able to download bonus material like trailers and games from the internet. There have two players, BDP-S350 and BDP-S550.

Both players can show picture-in-picture content and will be the first Sony Blu-ray players to do so, apart from the PlayStation 3 game console, which gained this feature via software update last year. The picture-in-picture feature, called Bonus View, can be used to show director or actor commentary in a small window while the movie plays.

Vudu’s HD Set Top Box Price Drop to Compete with Apple TV

Vudu has just announced the price slash of its famous HD (High Definition) video set top box by 25 percent this week due to competitive market situation. The new price of around $295, is quite a significant adjustment from its original retail price of $399. This has made it more competitive to what Apple TV has offered to consumers so far. The new price will be effective immediately and for those that have just bought the set top box from Vudu last month (within 30 days of the announcement), there will be a $100 rebate voucher given to compensate the price difference.

Paramount Drops HD-DVD

UPDATE: Paramount spokeswoman Brenda Ciccone made this statement in response to reports that Paramount is abandoning the HD-DVD format: “Paramount’s current plan is to continue to support the HD-DVD format.” The statement didn’t specify if Paramount would also produce Blu-ray DVDs in addition to HD-DVDs. It will be interesting to see how this story pans out.

I just gave the bad news to one of the guys in the Toshiba booth at CES. He wasn’t happy. Their HD-DVD focused booth looks a little silly now.

Ethereal Unveiled New HDMI-CAT4D For Cable Extension Using CAT5 standard

CAT5 (Category 5) cable is very common and can be easily available in home or office setup. Although the market is now picking up the new trend moving towards HD (High Definition) resolution, but it is still not easy to replace all existing CAT5 based cable with HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) cable for high definition streaming. Also, it is quite costly to totally replace all of them especially when the cables are running from one room to another room. In view of this, Ethereal has just unveiled a new way of connecting HDMI system by utilizing existing CAT5 cables that can transmit and receive HDMI signals over long distances. Known as HDMI-CAT5D, it is quite useful for digital home with media server and HD TV sitting in separate rooms.

Christie Unveiled First HD Projector with Single-Chip DLP

Christie has just launched a new DLP projector with HD (High Definition) capability.
Known as HD405, it is the first HD projector in the industrial that able to deliver HD resolution of up to 1920 X 1080 with single-chip DLP (Digital Light Processing) support. DLP is a trademark owned by TI (Texas Intrument) which has been widely deployed in projectors development.
