Adobe Flash No Sound WaveMapper Trick

Occasionally users may encounter problem that there is no sound output from the Windows system especially when trying to playback a Flash based contents by installing the latest version of Adobe Flash 9. The symptom is obvious when viewing video clips on online video sharing sites such as YouTube, MetaCafe, Daily Motion, MySpace Video, Google Video and etc. Video can be played back, but no sound, voice, or audio is heard.

There is a general Flash no sound registry fix to solve all driver mapping problem that may exists. But if you don’t want to touch so many registry keys, try the following trick which is also a better solution – direct to the cause.

Flash No Sound WaveMapper Solution

  1. Launch Registry Editor by typing regedit at Run command.
  2. Navigate to the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

  3. On the right pane, and check for existance of “wavemapper” registry subkey, the mail culprit causing Flash no sound. If not found, create a new String value named “wavemapper”, and give the entry value “msacm32.drv”.

If wavemapper entry is already existed, ensure that its value data is “msacm32.drv”.

Also ensure and verify that the msacm32.drv driver file is existing in C:\Windows\System32 folder. If the file is missing in that location, search for other copy of msacm32.drv in the computer, or copy that file from another system.

  • dude, i checked all that, they are there, and the sound is still muted, can anyone pls help. Nothing seems to work :( ((

    • I finally found a solution to my sound problem! Everything was grayed out for me and I tried all of the suggestions found online to no avail. I went to control panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, Audio…and changed the Default Device under Sound playback to Realtek AC97 Audio. For some odd reason Modem #1 Line Playback was the default. Hope this helps.

  • Amazing, I am back to life!!! I rarely post, but you definitely did the trick!!! SUPER, THX!!!

  • Wow you are absolutely amazing , after pulling my hair out for 2 weeks this solution did the trick, Thank you so much

  • Thank you! Was doing my head in, followed your directions worked like it should.

    Cheers

  • Thanks alot. Anne Huang. Maybe she should get a job at Microsoft. My sounds are back. They still have not answered this problem on there site. I will post this there as well.

  • F… the H… , Thnx a lot !

Searching for weeks this realy helped me out !!

Even all the professional Flash Support Sites did not get that far.

    Worked exactly as mentioned.

    Kay

  • Thanks a lot man..worked for me too

  • After weeks of searching for a solution on a brand new install of Win7 x64 which had suddenly lost all sound on flash in IE9 (but every other sound was ok – as was Microsoft Silverlight (surprise, surprise!!) and trying (unsuiccessfully) to reinstall everything from flash to Java to IE, etc etc etc – and also trying Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera etc etc etc with no results) AND nearly requiring medication and/or therapy, I finally found this site and the solution on adding the wavemapper key which had somehow gone missing on my machine…….

This solution worked first time and I'm glad to say saved my new computers life – was about to throw it out of the window and go Linux ;o)

    Thank you

  • Thank you so much! Your the best :D Take care

  • thanks a million. tried 1000 things and couldn't get the sound issues resolved.

wavemapper file was there, data value was there and everything was intact.

I deleted and it re-created it for the fun of it, and bam…sound came back.thanks!!

  • thanks! works fine :)

  • thankyou for this solution. was easy to follow and actually worked as well on win7 (32bit) after i had installed Shark Codec lost webpage sounds (iplayer and youtube etc) but working now thanks again

  • you are god!!!

works fine for me after install the logitech z-10 on my pc.

  • thanks a lot. God blessing you

  • Thanks a lot! Creating wavemapper with that value in Drivers32 worked for me. The culprit was a xvid codec that I installed.

  • Simple solution and it worked for me! Thanks a lot!

  • This is too simplistic.

I have a laptop that plays everything bar youtube. The driver is present. BBC iPlayer is fine.

    Can you explain that?

  • Thanks for pointing me toward the msacm32.drv file.

My registry was OK, but the file was 1 KBytes of test, not 20 KBytes of code.

Downloaded a new one, dropped it in and a six-month issue was fixed in a minute.

    Thanks again,

    Peter

  • I had msacm32.drv under wavemapper. My problem was in C:WindowsSystem32msacm32.drv. The file existed but it's size was 0KB. That threw up a red flag. I found a site to download msacm32.drv and downloaded it. I had a hard time deleting the old msacm32.drv. I had to give myself full access to the file to delete it. It said the owner of it was "TrustedInstaller". I believe it was some sort of malware. I moved my new msacm32.drv into the system 32 folder and it all works now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!… MY LIFE NOW IS NORMAL!!! THANKS ZILLION TIMES AGAIN!!

  • i have all the mentioned in place..still it does not work…help plz

  • thank you :)

  • worked greatttttttttttttttttttttttttttt thanks so much been trying for 8 months to fix this

  • thanx a lot..it really works

  • Thank you so much. I have read about the wavemapper error on another site, but it did not say how to modify or create a new one. I now have sound!

  • I too could not enter new string in registry then i followed Ann Huangs advice dated Dec 8 2009– IT WORKED!! — i do not know why but it worked… much thanks Ann!

  • excellent!!! – had a bad virus using W7 and didn't want to reinstall. using regetit it said that wavemapper existed but i couldn't see it to see if it had the correct string. However following the advices by anne huang to change the permissions worked – HURRAY

  • Thanks!

Just changing the permissions on the Wavemapper key to Full control for the Users group did the trick for me :)

  • Nope, def did not work..I've checked the registries, checked that the drivers are in system32..updated browser,WMP,Java..

..Internet sounds AND Windows system sounds do not work, not quite 'NO' sound, but rather high pitch squealing and 'audio garbage' .. almost like uncoupled audio..

..if I play media in WMP or winamp, audio works fine, can even stream i-net radio thru winamp..

…and here's the kicker, this has been an on/off issue for over a year, for me (this is a work machine, and the guy who previously used it had issues, as he d/l'd 'K-lite codec'), and every now and again, this sound issue arises, only to disappear a somtime later,..possibly after a whole wack of updates..

I definitely get the feeling this is a Microshit problem, as in they don't want to play nice with anyone they don't have financial stakes in..cause it always seems to resurface after the monthly Java updates..

COME ON M.S. .. just make something that works, reliably, consistently, without daily updates… THATS MY IDEA!!

  • I wanted to say thanks to the Admins for their effort to help those of us who have experienced this frustrating problem. I have a few more fixes and how they apply to Vista and 7 64bit.

Check if the file msacm32.drv is present in your Windows system32 folder. If not, copy it from another PC (that has the same version of Windows) and place the file in the system32 folder. This applies to Vista and 7 64Bit but in the SysWOW64 directory which is the folder for the 32 bit programs running on the 32bit virtual machine.

A very common sound problem is an incorrect or missing registry key for msacm32.drv discussed in the preceding.

1.Launch Registry Editor by typing regedit at Run command.

    2. Navigate to the following registry key:

    For XP and Vista 32Bit:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDrivers32

    3. On the right pane, and check for existence of “wavemapper” registry subkey, the mail culprit

causing Flash no sound. If not found, create a new String value named “wavemapper”, and give the

entry value “msacm32.drv”. If wavemapper entry is already existed, ensure that its value data

    is“msacm32.drv”.

For XP and Vista and 7 64bit:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionDrivers32

    4. On the right pane, and check for existence of “wavemapper” registry subkey, the mail culprit

causing Flash no sound. If not found, create a new String

value named “wavemapper”, and give the entry value “msacm32.drv”.

If wavemapper entry is already existed, ensure that its value data is “msacm32.drv”.

    5. In addition the permissions/security on these keys can prevent your browser flash plugin from

accessing them and preventing sound. Also if you receive errors editing or the key is blank you

need to check the permissions by right clicking on the key and choosing permissions. Choose

Advanced and make sure that the Administrators, System, Users Groups have "Full Control" under

permissions if not select them and click Edit and tick “Full Control" under the "Allow" column.

  • Hurray!!!it worked perfectely…thanx a lot…after a long time my system got it's life back…Thanx alot…u rock!!!

  • you rock, iv been looking on google for fixs to this and trying them for a few weeks now, most days..and managed to follow your instructions..woohooo thank you so very much and happy new year..:)

  • Such a simple fix, it really works!!! So many other posts on tech blogs give possible solutions to this same problem that I am guessing these steps would resolve. Thanks!!!

  • i really never leave comments here but thx to Anne Huang's comment, my sounds back! it really helps me throughtout the whole process.! thx thx thx! i whole-heartedly thank all of you guys for helping people like us! thx thx

  • I went thru all the tricks above… none helped.

I then tried booting to Ubantu using Wubi (linux) and had a flash player issue there also.

"You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application."

I uninstalled Ubuntu and now all is good!

I sure hope Ubuntu matures a little bit more, I am almost ready to leave Microsift entirely, for good.

  • So I followed this but it didn't work when I tried to make the new file it said it already exists. So i went to Edit-permissions…-advanced-edit the adminstrator- click full controll-ok-apply-apply. Then it should work!

  • Hey there,

I followed the instructions and it worked. Thank you very much. I never leave comments, but I whole-heartedly thank you for the step-by-step instructions. They were very accurate and complete and it worked! I am not a tech-savvy person, so I commend you on good writing!

  • Thanks. After a bad virus infecetion I had no sound for all webbrowser. The advice to check the wavemapper reg key value was useful although the name – value was present in the register.

The problem was actually register permissions. Once I gave permission to allow full control of the register for the admin account – IT WORKED!

  • Doesnt work :(

I have the registry string set to the specified value, and also the specified same driver in system32 folder ..

    gtalk/firefox/ie no sound :(

    wmp works though

  • I am not able to create the new value, "wavemapper" any ideas?

  • thank you so much man , worked perfect

  • Worked perfectly, thanks

  • thank you!
