How To Restore and Enable Visual Voicemail (VVM) and MMS That Not Working After iPhone Tethering Hack
After hacking the iPhone to enable Internet tethering without paying your mobile service provider, chance are the MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) and/or VVM (Virtual Voicemail) functions on the iPhone, be it 1st Gen iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S, may not working anymore.
The problem or error happens because when enabling Internet tethering by loading a new Mobileconfig configuration profile, a new .ipcc (carrier settings) file that enables the tethering, but disables the Visual Voicemail and/or MMS is been installed.
How to fix, restore and re-enable VVM and MMS in iPhone, and most importantly, keep the Internet tethering service intact? The solution is indeed very simple. Just go to Settings -> General -> Reset on iPhone, and tap Reset Network Settings. The iPhone will reboot. After the restart, MMS, VVM and tethering should be working fine again.
Alternatively, go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network, and set the APN for Visual Voicemail to acds.voicemail. However, doing so will disable Tether and the option to tether will disappear.

I didn’t have the “cellular data network” option but I did notice the apn info in something called “Profile” which was under settings> general. there was no way to edit the APN in the advanced settings so I hit “remove” under the Profile button. my VVM is now working and I haven’t had any other problems.

I spent hours on the phone with AT&T because of this no issue to no avail.
Howver, this solution worked! If I would have only known it was so simple all along. Thank you so so much.

After reset the network setting, I still can’t get VVM working.
I got it working by go to General > US Profile, remove the profile, then go to General > reset > reset Network Setting. Then VVM is working again.

You have to have the recommended ipcc file or you won’t have the carrier settings options.
Run a little command in terminal (Make sure you are on OS 3.0 on a 3G iPhone and iTunes 8.2):
defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE
After that, download iphonetetheringfile.dmg (for AT&T) and mount the disk image. For other carriers, try here. Option-click on “restore” in your iTunes with your iPhone attached. Browse to the opened disk image file and hit OK. It will update phone settings for a few seconds.

Be sure you actually have a data plan associated with your account. If your IMEI is not associated with an iPhone, AT&T will remove your data plan and keep your voice minutes active. I had to restore everything back to normal for my VM to work. Notice how after the hack, you can’t even call your own number without hearing a busy signal. I’d rather do without MMS until AT&T figures this out. Right now, we pay extra for messaging and…get no MMS to boot! Yeaaaaa…NOT!

I am having the same problem as Eddie. I do not have the Cellular Data Network option. I have tried to reset network settings. I have tried hard reset. I can’t get it to give me that option in the network anymore. How do I fix this?

Crap!
I don’t have the Option Cellular Data Network Under General>Network>
All that is there are Enable 3G, Data Roaming, VPN and Wi-fi.
What do I do, now?

The simple network setting reset does NOT work to get your visual voicemail back. For those of you who installed the tethering file and want to get visual voicemail back, do as Dan K said in his post:“Go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network, and change the APN for Visual Voicemail from wap.cingular to acds.voicemail”
This is the ONLY method that worked for me and many others. You will LOSE your tethering though. Seems you cannot have tethering AND visual voicemail at the same time.

Worked the first try for me! Many thanks Tung.
I tried the ” go to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings” with no luck at all. But all is fine now.

I’ve tried that so many times, but im still unable to get my VVM to work.. Pls help!!

just use youmail.com service for visual voicemail instead of ATT
July 19th, 2009 00:16
How do you delete the hacked ipcc file? I’d rather have Visual voicemail working then tethering for now.

Tung,
how can i give tethering and VVM two non-conflicting type-masks? what should these values be if i’m using t-mobile in NL?
July 7th, 2009 04:28
doesn’t work….to get voicemail notifications back, simply remove the at&t profile and then reset network settings (rebooting probably would just work instead of resetting network settings, but never tried that beforehand)
if you need the tethering, simply add it when you need it
July 6th, 2009 16:26
Go to Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network, and the APN for Visual Voicemail to acds.voicemail
Note that doing this will disable Tether and the option to tether willl disappear. The reason is because the Visual Voicemail doesn’t have the same APN as Tethering, but your ipcc says otherwise. To get your Tethering and VVM to work without conflict, You will need to edit the ipcc file and give Tethering and VVM two non-conflicting type-masks.

I restored network settings twice now and my visual voicemail still will not work after I installed the tethering program. Does anyone have something else I should try to fix this problem? I thought of a total restore but i am not sure if that will fix the problem.
