Download Windows Mail from Vista for Use in Windows 7
Windows Mail is a free email and newsgroup client Microsoft introduced in Windows Vista to succeed Outlook Express. Both Windows Mail and Outlook Express (for Windows XP) is replaced by Windows Live Mail, an e-mail client downloadable as part of Windows Live Essentials suite of products. Thus, Windows 7 does not pre-installed or bundled with any email client, including Windows Mail.
Newer Windows Live Mail client definitely has much more features, but users need to accustom to the new user interface of the Windows Live Mail. User who wants to use legacy Windows Mail in Windows 7, it’s possible to extract and port Windows Mail from Windows Vista to install in Windows 7.

In order to install and use Windows Mail in Windows 7, just copy the complete content (all files and folders) inside %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows Vista, and overwrites or replaces the same folder on Windows 7 system to port over and migrate Windows Mail.
- For user using English edition of Windows 7, and no longer has Windows Vista system, download the Windows Mail system files: Windows-Mail-Vista.zip. Otherwise, manually copy recursively the %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder from Windows Vista system, including the MUI language pack folder.
- Grant full control permissions and ownership to administrators for %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows 7 system.
- Backup the %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows 7.
- Extract and copy the Windows Mail files from Windows Vista to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder of Windows 7, overwrite if duplicates are found.
- Create a shortcut on desktop or Start Menu that points to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe executable.

Windows Mail is still part of W7:
C:\Program Files\Windows Mail
WinMail ReActivation:
– take over ownership of msoem.dll
– replace W7’s msoe.dll with the one from Vista
– add Win7owsMail.reg to Registy
I’ve done it manually via the Properties dialog…
you can also take a shortcut:
GrantAdminFullControl.REG
All links posted by hooknose have been disabled by himself, except his most recent:
MSOE.DLL 64bit
MSOE.DLL 32bit
Win7owsMail.reg

The first line in this article states:
“Windows Mail is a free email and newsgroup client”
I keep hearing this and I also keep hearing that it can be downloaded from the internet, but I’ll be damned if I can find it anywhere for download. I have even been to microsoft.com and I didn’t see it available there either.
If some REALLY know where I can get Windows Mail, could that person please clue me in on where it is at?
Thanks much,
Misato K.

It worked great, thanks it made my day. A bit of work though to grant full control permissions and ownership to administrators for all the necassary files to be able to copy/overwrite them. Will it work if I copy the Vista files from a 32-bit system to Win7 64-bit?

I did all the steps, but when I click on the winmail.exe, it just hangs on me and looks like it keeps loading.
Can someone re-up the x64 vista windows mail download incase the one my previous computer is somehow messed up?

Hey, everything works correctly, with one exception: I can’t edit / open .contacts files – when I click wab.exe it opens contacts folder, but when I try to edit / create new contact a blank window opens and immediately closes… @ Vista there was an update which after uninstalling fixed this, but what can I do @ Win 7?

Oh, and for some reason it wouldn’t let me select “Windows Mail” as the default e-mail program (hence stopping me from using Mailwasher). Tracked down this .REG fix that puts everything in the proper spots so Win 7 thinks Windows Mail was properly “installed”.
Now Windows Mail shows up in Default Programs in Control Panel, and Mailwasher works like a charm. Enjoy!

Works PERFECTLY. Some notes…
For x64, you obviously need the files from x64 Vista so the ZIP here won’t work.
I just deleted the whole Windows Mail folder (after changing perms) and replaced with the 64-bit Vista set. Thanks a lot for this, Windows Mail Live is TERRIBLE. Anyone in need of the 64 bit set, give me a shout with your email.

Does anyone know how to fix this WinMail bug.
If you are not connected to the Internet, and if you set Windows Mail to offline mode, Windows Mail would crash. It is on Windows 7 RTM build…

It’s just needed to replace msoe.dll with the one from Vista, in order to WinMail work. Don’t change other files.

In addition to above, registering of “mailclients.reg” sets Windows Mail as default mail program in W7 (*.eml, “mailto”-links,…)
