Download Windows Mail from Vista for Use in Windows 7
Windows Mail is a free email and newsgroup client Microsoft introduced in Windows Vista to succeed Outlook Express. Both Windows Mail and Outlook Express (for Windows XP) is replaced by Windows Live Mail, an e-mail client downloadable as part of Windows Live Essentials suite of products. Thus, Windows 7 does not pre-installed or bundled with any email client, including Windows Mail.
Newer Windows Live Mail client definitely has much more features, but users need to accustom to the new user interface of the Windows Live Mail. User who wants to use legacy Windows Mail in Windows 7, it’s possible to extract and port Windows Mail from Windows Vista to install in Windows 7.

In order to install and use Windows Mail in Windows 7, just copy the complete content (all files and folders) inside %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows Vista, and overwrites or replaces the same folder on Windows 7 system to port over and migrate Windows Mail.
- For user using English edition of Windows 7, and no longer has Windows Vista system, download the Windows Mail system files: Windows-Mail-Vista.zip. Otherwise, manually copy recursively the %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder from Windows Vista system, including the MUI language pack folder.
- Grant full control permissions and ownership to administrators for %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows 7 system.
- Backup the %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder in Windows 7.
- Extract and copy the Windows Mail files from Windows Vista to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\ folder of Windows 7, overwrite if duplicates are found.
- Create a shortcut on desktop or Start Menu that points to %SystemDrive%\Program Files\Windows Mail\winmail.exe executable.

downloaded the 2 winrar files you created amster and extracted them. But they do the same thing as what I had. When I open the winmail program I get “thousands” of processes running and no program. Eventually the OS just hangs and I have to reboot or if I can get into the taskmanger soon enough I can stop the process tree and continue on.
Is this because I have win7 64bit?
Does anyone have any other ideas.

Message for MG:
To change the permission – first take ownership.
To do this, right click on the folder. Select properties. Then select security. Then click advanced. Then click the OWNER tab. Then Click EDIT. Now select Administrator or your username in the screen as the new owner. Check the box where it says “replace owner on subcontainers and objects”. Now click Apply if available – else ok. And again click apply if avaialble else OK. And finally again click apply if available else OK.
You had to go through that process first.
Now you can go back in again, Right click the folder – select properties. Select the security tab. Click on EDIT. Now give yourself FULL CONTROL!
Let me know how this goes for you – it’s the least you can do !

Does that mean Vista Mail can’t be ported into Win 7 64 bits?

Need entire windows mail program please. I want to try the whole process again cleanly.
Have 64bit Win 7, tried uploading the msoe.dll (64 bit) after fixing all permissions. imported the reg fix. Windows Mail just hangs when you try to open it. When it finally times out it says msoe.dll has a problem. I’ve tried regsvc32 to reregister the file but that throws an error saying the file failed to load. The specified module can’t be found. I got task manager to run after several minutes and found over 3700 tasks, over 3600 of them were winmail.exe – end tasked these to get the laptop back in operation.
The System & admistrator have all rights, so I dont’ think there’s a permissions issue any more. But I think there might be some sort of corruption.
Would really like to get this client working.
