does anyone know if collecting my hotmail via POP on my Gmail account will keep my hotmail account alive?

ie: I think i have to sign in to hotmail every 30 days to keep it active. Will this "collection" method through gmail keep it alive so i don't have to sign in any more?

thanks.
J.

A few questions:

1) I did what you suggested, but if I choose to "Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server" my hotmail account begins to be filled with duplicated email. If I choose not to leave a copy of my messages in the server will I lose all the messages stored in my hotmail account?

2) I have been using Hotmail for over 10 years now, there are tens of thousands of emails categorized in folders. Now, is there any way I could assign a Gmail tag to an email located in a specific Hotmail folder?

Because all the messages I accumulated for many years, I decided to register for a paid hotmail account, as soon as Microsoft started to offer that option, so I do have POP access.

I decided to change my email provider after dealing with hotmail support for months regarding the failure in their search feature. Their final answer was that, due the size of my account, I cannot expect to be able to do a search over all the emails in my account using their online search feature, no matter if I have a paid account or not. I need to download all those gigs of information in every PC I need to access my hotmail account from, and then do a local search in my PC or laptop. They were not even able to tell how much storage I am now using.

Now I found myself under their mercy, until I find a way to transfer all this information to a different provider that does not have this absurd limitation for a paid account. Gmail has the option to upgrade the amount of storage available for an annual fee, so I'm hoping to be able to use their service instead.

Thanks so much! I have been searching all day for a solution that works on a Mac, and was about to give up. This is a godsend for those who have been trapped in hotmail. I wish all online explanation were as complete and thorough, with screen grabs, as yours are. My compliments.

For those that say it didn't work, you have to put in exactly what the example has ... even the port #, and the @hotmail.com extension on the user name ... that was a couple of things that did not automatically come up and I had to type them that way.

So I tried this but it still doesn’t work for me!
Gmail says: Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password.
Please contact Microsoft’s support team for more information on POP access.
Server returned error: “user does not have POP3 access”

No clue what I am missing! I tried to set the pop3 on the hotmail, and I change all the info to unitedkingdom and
Postal Code: WC1B 3DG
Constituent Country: England
Time zone: London, United Kingdom - GMT

Any other clues?
