Useful Tips to Prevent OpenDNS From Redirecting Google Searches in Firefox and Internet Explorer

When we talk about Google, the first thing comes into our mind is Google Search. Nevertheless, Google is the premier search tool in today internet world, it is not only providing the best web search engine, but also offers other great features like directory, image search, current news, user groups and etc that attracts many people configuring it as a default search engine in their computer. However, if you have OpenDNS configured in your PC at the same time, all search type from Firefox location bar or Internet Explore address bar will be directed to Yahoo search instead, that could be very frustrating especially for those that prefer to use Google search engine. Not to worry, here is a simple tips of how to continue using Google search without removing OpenDNS.

To maintain Google as default search engine without removing OpenDNS entirely from your computer or router, just follow below simple steps:

Set Google as default search engine for Firefox browser:
1) Type about:config in address bar and press enter
2) For Firefox 3 user, click “I’ll be careful, I promise!”
3) At Filter field, type keyword.url and set the value as “http://www.google.com/search?q=”. If you to have “I am Feeling Lucky” style Google search, enter keyword.url value as “http://www.google.com/search?btnI=I%27m+Feeling+Lucky&q=”
4) Set keyword.enable value as “TRUE”

Set Google as default search engine for Internet Explorer browser:
1) Go to Start -> Run, then type regedit and press enter
2) Look for “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes”
3) Open {6A1806CD-94D4-4689-BA73-E35EA1EA9990} for Internet Explore 6 and {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} for Internet Explorer 7, set the value as “http://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}”

If you are one of them that face the same problem, no harm to have a quick try now if it resolves your issue.

    This does not work.

I do not have an OpenDNS Dashboard. Who the hell does?

Yes, you can turn this feature off from the dashboard. But

    1. you have to sign up to opendns
    2. if you have dynamic ip, you have to run a small program that updates your new ip, so that your network preferences work…

This is not so good. I feel like this should be opt-in, rather than opt-out (then it will make sense to have the program running in background).

Oh well, what can I say… annoying business models…!

If you configured opendns servers (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220) under tcpip dns properties for “local area connection” , then the tips doesn’t work for firefox.
You need to change the DNS server addr (or configure it to “obtain dns server address automatically”)

This worked for me, I didn’t go on from after the keyword.url and I used the “I’m feeling lucky” link.

    Thanks mate!

actually, if you type more than one search string, it automatically uses google. only for single word strings does it redirect to yahoo search.

so try using “abcd .” instead of “abcd” or “abcd.” as the search string.

Or you can just turn it off in your OpenDNS Dashboard.
