How to Uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) in Vista

Fed up with Internet Explorer 8 which is unstable at best? IE8 IE8 Beta 1 may occasionally crashes or not responding when browsing websites, and users have to close the browser with request to send the error report to Microsoft. The bugs or crashes happen more frequently especially if users using third-party add-ons such as Google Toolbar. This is generally expected as this is the first beta of IE 8.

Beside, user interface of IE8 is generally similar to IE7, reducing the enticing for users who face problems when using IE8 to stay using it. If you decided to rollback and revert back to original IE7 or IE6, it’s possible to uninstall IE8 to do so.

IE8 can be uninstall by using Add or Remove Programs module in Windows XP, but in Windows Vista, Windows Internet Explorer 8 is not considered to be a ‘program’. Instead, IE8 is categorizing as an ‘update’. Thus, users will not be able to find Windows Internet Explorer 8 in “Programs and Features” of Windows Vista.

Uninstall IE8

To uninstall Internet Explorer 8, go to Control Panel, and click on Uninstall Programs link or Programs and Features icon. Then on Tasks pane on the left, click on View installed updates link. Locate and select Windows Internet Explorer 8 in the list of installed updates, and then click on Uninstall button. Click on Yes when asked that are you sure want to uninstall the update.

If there is no option of IE8 been found on “Programs and Features” or “Add or Remove Programs” dialog box, or uninstallation of Internet Explorer 8 is unclean (causing error message such as setup cannot continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer has been detected on this computer when trying to downgrade to IE7), try to manually run the spuninst.exe.

To do so, go to C:\WINDOWS\ie8\spuninst\ folder (your drive letter may be different), and run spuninst.exe. Restart the computer after uninstallation completed.

I have a laptop with vist and pre installed IE8. I must have IE7 as 8 is not compatible for the remote desktop connection to our county database. There is no option in the view installed updates and also no spuninst folder. Plus i can’t even download IE7 for vista because the microsoft website will only suppport XP or 2003 server..!! This is rather frustrating. I also cant use other browsers as they are not supported by our county council

PLEASE PLEASE need some advice on this one.
    Regards
    Charlie

Thank you !!!! OMG THANK YOU AGAIN.

I HATE IE, (mozilla man), and have wanted it removed from my Vista forever, and Windows Help, says, when asked if it it can be removed…”NO”.

    Liars, Liars, Liars.

I really hate the way IE seems to constanltly be “tied in” to programs that only use it for web service, and then makes itself your default browser…WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE ??

    AGAIN, THANKS..I AM PLEASED, RELIEVED…ECSTATIC !!!!

    PS.
I should have explained – my OS is Visa home premium. So removal of IE8 was via the ‘view installed updates’ option described above.

Once IE8 was removed IE7 was automatically restored and works normally.

Thanks for the tip on removing ‘Internet Explorer 8′.

MS screwed up again! – After installing IE8 ‘My Favorites’ links no longer worked (well, most of them!). I couldn’t replace them because the ‘Add Favorite’ button also failed to open the command, screen just blinked momentarily.

On removing IE8 as advised everything works normal once gain. – Phew!

I didn’t mind EXP8 – but I print a lot of coupons and since I upgraded to EXP8 I have not been able to print on may sites – being constantly told that I had to install a coupon printer that I installed over and over…..I hope that getting rid of it will get rid of the printing issues. I didn’t have any issue before the “upgrade” – so keepin my fingers crossed!!

but as as I open Opera -instant speed, however, even Oper fails to open a webpage now and then ever since IE8 was installed. Basically IE8 has effected all http/…/port 80 requests ? IE8 has screwed around with a lot more things that just being a basic web-broweser.

YUP, IE8 is still HORRIBLE !, IE8 almost seems to selectively work on websites that it wants to show.
Whats goin’ on with Microsoft ? -DO they not know how bad IE8 has really been. !!???
M$ really sucks now. This is how Billy-Bob wants to control “OUR” public Internet ?

Every other OS out there (Apple, Linux, *BSD’s , PS3, …) uses a basic Unix NetOS.

‘comon Bill throw the towel in -the decades of greed should be over for WinBlows. !!!

Man!! IE8 SUCKS on Vista!! I simply am unable to open links by clicking on them in other windows. Keeps saying to add the site to the pop-up blocker. But, the pop-up blocker is turned off… go figure.

Sometimes, it tries to open a new window, but the browser just locks up.

I experience none of these issues on XP. IE8 seems to be fairly stable there. But, why should we be worried about the stability of a ‘critical update’?

    Great post!

IE8 started annoying me as it rendered many web sites wrong. But the drop that spilled the glass was that embedded Real Player (as used by the BBC iPlayer and others) won’t work with IE8 unless you re-install IE8 after installing Real Player.

I really think that’s insane! I’m much happier now that I’m back in IE7.

    Well IE8 is crap…diarea crap.

My Dell xps 720 running Vista Ultimate became so unstable it would not shutdown. So I powered down and it never recovered on power up. So I used system restore to go back to the date prior to the install of IE8. It booted fine, but IE8 is still there. I found an IE8 unstall program from the Microsoft Fix site, but it did not work
So now that I read this thread, I looked for a patch or update. Its not there !!!

    Any ideas ????

IE8 should never been released in i.ts condition

After installing IE8 and having my laptop all messed up I tried the following procedure that was mentioned above.

First I went to add/remove and uninstalled Windows Service Pack 3. After it rebooted I then uninstalled IE7 and after all that(which was a lengthly process) I rebooted again and tada the older version of IE was there.

Funny part was before I found this page, I had called Microsoft Tech Support(or lack thereof) and was on the phone for over an hour and they couldnt get nowhere with it. They still say its the best yet. Oh boy.

    Thanks for the advice

yes Beta8 on my XP messed my desk top up bad. It confused me so bad by constant errors and not being able to even get on a page without the errors that and even do anything that i had to do a complete recovery and then my puter got so messed up that i have to take it in to get it fixed. Since HP didnt send me a recovery disk with my puter 5 yrs ago i was screwed royally. I wouldnt try anything that says Beta at all. I have a new laptop and i wont download any beta. I wish I could send them my bill for there mess. if it is doing this to so many people why are they still allowing it to be downloaded. Its a total rip off. You should never mess with puters cause this is a costly price we pay as the consumers.

    There’s only one slight problem.

IE downloads and installs perfectly, but when i try to use the browser, it doesnt work. i use wireless internet, and it works perfectly on the Safari browser, but not in the IE browser. it tells me the only way to solve it is to call a service provider. i called, but they couldnt find out anything. Help?

My computer is perfect since I went back and replaced IE8 Beta w/ IE7 …. You guys have serious computer issues. None of you know how to properly use a computer. IE8 is perfectly fine and will definitely be an improvement over IE7. If you idiots removed all your special googlebars and such it would never crash. My IE8 never crashed and am only rolling back to IE7 because IE8 isn’t supported by any of my security programs yet. It wasn’t slow, however, if you have vista I do not reccomend installing IE8. Also, everyone saying what a nightmare or I couldn’t remove it, you all should not be using computers… opening your nightmare IE8 and go to google, type in how to uninstall IE8(the new features will even finish it for you!)..you land here. Get a brain.

first change the folder settings such that you can veiw hiddden files.
Then go to winndows folder in c:/
there you will find ie8 folder, there you have spuninst folder in which you can find spuninst.exe, by excecuting this you can uininstall ie8.

This is the solution I used.
My xp machine did not display ie8 in add/remove
    programs.
download both the ie7 and ie8 installers.
    save both to desk top.
open task manager, (right click taskbar)
    run ie8 installer.
watch dialog box, it will remove itself first,
when dialog box changes to installing/downloading updates,
halt the process, (using task manager)
    restart, run ie7 installer,
do not forget to uncheck the update box,
    perform the required restart,
    worked just fine for me.

If you install Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 first and then upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3, you will be unable to remove Internet Explorer 8. That option will be disabled. To work around this issue, uninstall Windows XP Service Pack 3 first. When you do this, the remove option is enabled. Then, you can uninstall Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1.

From Microsoft’s site. Hope this helps.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! IE8 needs some serious repairs. They shouldn’t be allowed to Beta this program as of yet, until they work out these major kinks.. It completely locked up my PC after installation. It’s a brand new Gateway, NO WAY it was anything else but IE8…

    Thanks again!

IE8 is non-sense. It is unstabele and reports errors for each and every site I open in it, while the same requests are handled by Firefox perfectly. Though it is understandable that IE8 is BETA, Microsoft sucks. I suggest netizens to refresh to the new era of open source computing. Its time the monopoly is gone!!!

How do you uninstall IE8 Beta if it doesn’t appear in Control Panel/Programs? I’m currently stuck with it and it crashes on exit every time (and thus not saving any settings). IE8 doesn’t even appear on Windows Installer CleanUp utility.
