KB937287 Fails to Install At Stage 3, Unable to Reinstall or Uninstall and Restarts Repetitively
KB937287, the prerequisite update package for Windows Vista Service Pack 1 that update the service layer that handles installation and removal of software updates, language packs, optional Windows features and service packs in Vista. However, the KB 987287 update have created various type of problems when trying to ‘update itself’ (essentially the KB937287 update is to update the updating component of Vista), when users are installing it from Windows Update.
For lucky Vista users, they may only face installation of KB937287 failed issue, which can be resolved by downloading standalone update package from Microsoft Download Center. However, there are more serious issues facing some users too.
Other problems and errors including the installation of KB937287 stuck at the following message:
configuring updates stage 3 of 3. 0% complete
After you receive this message, the computer reverts to the screen that displays the same message. Additionally, the update is not installed successfully, and the computer restarts, possible repetitively in endless reboot loop. Even if users manage to boot into desktop or Safe Mode, the update cannot be uninstalled or re-installed properly.
Microsoft publishes KB949358 that provides 3 recovery methods to restore computer to usable conditions. In any cases, it’s recommended that users with problem on the KB937287 to manually download and install KB937287 update package.
Microsoft releases v2 of KB937287 which requires KB949939, which Microsoft claims able to solve the problems.

Try putting in your Vista DVD and when it loads choose “repair your computer” at the bottom-left of the window and choose System Restore then restore to before the update was installed

Thanks for sharing this information. I ran into the problem the other night and have been caught in the ‘endless’ loop of Windows rebooting itself to complete Stage 3 of its 3 stage update process.
The challenge is trying to break this cycle. Even by turning off the computer (which is never pleasant when staring at the Windows reminder on screen ‘Do not turn off your computer’) and resorting to a Safe Mode launch it still takes two cycles to get to a ‘recovery’ mode where you can try and apply a restore point.
I still have not had any luck trying to resolve this problem but at least I now have some links to follow-up with. I’m not sure what people do if they only have one computer or don’t have decades of experience troubleshooting these kinds of annoying glitches.
