Disable and Remove Yahoo! Messenger 9 Ads
Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 in beta version is available for free public download to install and use. As with any previous versions of Yahoo Messenger, there are various ads blocks display advertisements in messenger or message and chat windows. The banner ad and text ad units can be disabled or turned off by using a simple registry hack similar to trick used to remove ads on Yahoo Messenger 8 and version 7.
To remove and disable ads display on Yahoo Messenger 9, follow the trick below:
- Run Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\pager\Locale
- In the right pane, locate a value named Enable Messenger Ad with default value as 1. Set the value to 0.
- Restart Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.
The ads will be disappeared from Yahoo Messenger after restarting.

@just me
ty – i do try – lol
it was intended that you rename the executable to YahooMessenger.exe – saving the original first – if you do that, you should not have to change any shortcuts

@Rick
If you used this patch :
http://www.4shared.com/file/78620978/8a02500c/YP2034us.html
.. for 9.0.0.2034 , don`t forget to delete any shortcuts of your Yahoo! messenger from desktop and start menu and replace them with a shortcut from the .exe file that you get from the pacth.

btw – i see a few minor changes in 2112 – i do NOT see any real big improvements – this is typical of yahoo! – the biggest change from one version to the next always seems to be how they manage advertisements – not features and functions – i get the impression they change a few things here and there to justify an update – but the real meat is in how ads are handled

Your YM_Patch.bat file needed to be updated to block Ads in Yahoo Messenger version 9.0.0.2112

Howdy,
Seems that yahoo now has the version 2112.

@Rick
OK, Rick – lol
Maybe we are doing something differently, as I am running version 9.0.0.2034 and have no ads.
If all else fails, just download the pre-patched exe (v9.0.0.2034 US) file here:
http://www.4shared.com/file/78620978/8a02500c/YP2034us.html
Let us know if it works for you.

this idea might work for messenger 8 perhaps but sure didnt work for mine. the ad is still there, even after i changed it. Heck when it showed back up after a restart of the program the pesky ad laughs at your febal attempt to rid it, so i went back in there and elimiated yurl and local as well, and guess what boys and girls, its still there even after all that. So evidently I have a yahoo messenger 9 that defys all logic or you geniuses do not know what your talking about.

.. is perfect . I have Win Vista Ultimate SP1 with Yahoo 9.0.0.2034 and it works . I used all “ad remover” programs from internet and they didn`t worked . Thank you very much for your support .

@trashman
sorry if you are having troubles – that was a preliminary patch – i am almost finished with the updated (and much improved) version – in the mean time, you may download the already patched executable at this link (i assuume you are in US) – i have also placed pre-patched files for all countries in the same folder

And dedndave is right, doing that “127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com” thing does cause other things to fail.
December 31st, 2008 12:02
Ok, so I’m working with version 9.0.0.2034
First I did the registry (…\pager\yurl) with those added “*” in it. That did nothing.
Then I also set the …\pager\Locale setting to 0. That didn’t help either.
Then I applied the patch that dedndave made. It displayed one error, something about Cannot execute C:\Progra~1\…blablabla\messenger\ympatch.com
but then says process is complete.
still no luck with getting rid of that ad on the bottom.
The only thing that had any effect on the ad was the “127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com” edit to the HOSTS file. All it did was cause the ad to just show as some http navigational error. Didn’t get rid of the whole extra bit of the window that pops out at the bottom.
By the way I’m on Vista Home Premium. I’m not going nuts over the ads, I just want the window to be as compact as possible.

Not good to disable insider site in hosts file.
That disables other desirable features.
However, if you use the simple patch I wrote earlier, you may combine that with other techniques to eliminate most of the other ads without losing features. Here is my 1,2,3,4 list:
1) use my simple patch
2) replace the desirable URLS from urls.xml file with URLS in HKCU\Software\Yahoo\Pager\YUrls
3) lock the filename “urls.xml” by creating a folder with that name, instead of a file
4) rather than replacing ALL of the ads with “*”, localize some of them – they are not all ads – some are informational panes – localize these: (3) webcam ads, webcam upload ad, change room banner
there are a few other little tricks, as well
I swear – my update is almost finished – lol

I am looking for the full installer for version 7.0.0.247 (7.86 MB). Filehippo only has the download installer. I have tried FreeCreed and OldApps, as well as talking to John Kirschner, and searching the web. I did manage to find it on a Russian site, but the file is corrupted, and my Russian is terrible – no way to let them know to fix it. I know this is a really old version, but I want to try and write a multi patch for it (after I get finished with the ver 8/9 updates). – ThanX – dedndave

By the way, to edit a batch file, right-click on it, then left-click on Edit. It may ask you if you if you want to “Run” it or not – click “Run” or “Yes”. To be more clear about which lines to edit, the 5th line in the original file is:
set YMPATH=%programfiles%\Yahoo!\Messenger
and the 9th line is:
%SystemDrive%
These parameters that have “%” at both ends are called environment variables. It is a DOS mechanism of determining certain information about your computer. the DOS “set” command is how to set one up. In my batch file, for example, I use “YMPath” as an environment variable so that I only have to figure out the path one time in the batch file. If you are running a system with program files in places other than C:\Program Files, or with the OS in places other than C:\Windows or C:\WinNT, I suggest you familiarize yourself with environment variables and the DOS commands to edit them.

HiJim,
You may edit the batch file (YM_Patch.bat), which is similar to a text file. In the example below, I will demonstrate the edits if the Messenger program were located in “D:\My Programs”.
On the 5th line, change the command to:
set YMPath=D:\My Programs\Yahoo!\Messenger
This line must contain the drive letter and the full path of the location of the YahooMessenger.exe program file, and must not end with a “\”.
On the 9th line, change the command to:
D:
This line must contain the drive letter only,
followed by a “:”.
That should do it for you, Jim. This raises an interesting point. The best way for me to ascertain the drive and path of the Messenger program is to query the registry and write a program to parse the resultant text file so that it may be turned into a batch command. This is not that difficult, but I don’t have time to do it at the moment. I was really hoping that users who have the program located anywhere other than C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger would know how to edit batch files to get where they wanted – lol. So much for that. In the future, I will make it easier to edit the batch file and make a note of it in the read me file.

Removing ads from versions 9.0.0.2018 and 9.0.0.2034 is a bit more difficult than previous versions. I wrote this patch that removes ONLY the main messenger window ads for those 2 versions:

editing the host file did not work for me .
Vista 64bit nor did any of the other tricks.
still have the little ads at the bottom but I have been able to block the hosts of most of them through my firewall, but some of the ads are on a host that if u block it , it slows down other things like composing an e-mail . It wont load cause its trying to load an ad first that u have blocked, so u have to wait about 15 seconds when it times out trying and then will load.
