Disable and Remove Yahoo! Messenger 9 Ads
Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 in beta version is available for free public download to install and use. As with any previous versions of Yahoo Messenger, there are various ads blocks display advertisements in messenger or message and chat windows. The banner ad and text ad units can be disabled or turned off by using a simple registry hack similar to trick used to remove ads on Yahoo Messenger 8 and version 7.
To remove and disable ads display on Yahoo Messenger 9, follow the trick below:
- Run Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\pager\Locale
- In the right pane, locate a value named Enable Messenger Ad with default value as 1. Set the value to 0.
- Restart Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.
The ads will be disappeared from Yahoo Messenger after restarting.

When you run NOTEPAD in Vista, right click on Notpad and select “Run As Administrator” and you will be able to edit system files. This prevents virus from editing your host files without your knowledge.

Editing the host file does not work.. It does block the ad but also blocks other features of Yahoo.. It also doesn’t work for v9.0.0.2018..

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ and open “host” with notepad and add this on the last line: 127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com save it then restart the messenger it’s the ads is gone..this should this should work with all Yahoo Messenger’s VS’s.

It is stupid to block insider.msg.yahoo.com
This server holds no ads that are in messenger
It is the server for..
- Roomlists
- Display pictures
- Yahoo! Insider
I do not recommend you do this.

Many report it work but many also says that few feature is gone not just ads. Like offline message, IMviroment, etc. Please someone make a perfect patch. Thx.

The trick for hosts.dat file works for sure, but it also blocks yahoo from loading new IMvironments or audibles

The registry tip doesn’t work anymore, maybe because Yahoo changed their code.
*** REMOVE YAHOO MESSENGER ADS SAFELY:
Here’s a safest and effective way to block Yahoo Messenger Ads for ANY VERSION.
- NO need to edit the registry.
- NO need for EXE Patches that has Trojans.
- ALL YOU NEED is Notepad.
*** BLOCK ADS BY BLOCKING THE AD SERVER:
1. Open Notepad.
2. Open the following file:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
3. Add the following line at the end of the text file:
127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com
