Disable and Remove Yahoo! Messenger 9 Ads
Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 in beta version is available for free public download to install and use. As with any previous versions of Yahoo Messenger, there are various ads blocks display advertisements in messenger or message and chat windows. The banner ad and text ad units can be disabled or turned off by using a simple registry hack similar to trick used to remove ads on Yahoo Messenger 8 and version 7.
To remove and disable ads display on Yahoo Messenger 9, follow the trick below:
- Run Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\pager\Locale
- In the right pane, locate a value named Enable Messenger Ad with default value as 1. Set the value to 0.
- Restart Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.
The ads will be disappeared from Yahoo Messenger after restarting.

It seems like dedndave has forgotten about us : )
December 7th, 2009 05:57
I ALSO VOTE to get rid of the plugins tabs altogether, I NEVER USE ANY Yahoo plugins, please get rid of that space and so the list of friends is maximized thanks~! Hope u can do that DedNDave!
December 1st, 2009 21:22
Btw , you need a new name now “Disable and Remove Yahoo! Messenger 10 Ads”
December 1st, 2009 21:15
nice job dedndave . also as Swordfish requested , can u make an exe without the plugins ? i really want my messenger to be clean
November 20th, 2009 04:36
i don’t understand why the ad keeps reappearing after restart. the exe has the same hash with the cracked one, but i have to overwrite it with the cracked one for the ad to no longer appear.
what’s the logic for that?
November 14th, 2009 08:01
10x 10x 10x
and as a request, if it’s not that hard to remove that plug-in bar that i was talking about, i’m sure a lot of people would apreciate it if you would make an *exe without it, just as an alternative for those of us that are not using plug-ins.
thanks again for 1102.
November 13th, 2009 21:04
they never get tired, do they – lol
completely removing the plug-ins bar would mean no more plug-ins

dedndave, we are all waiting for you to do your magic
also, removing that ugly “Plug-ins – Add Plug-ins” bar would be nice.

and turn them off
i also turn off the search bar
November 7th, 2009 05:16
Dedndave,so glad you’re back and thanks for the patch! By the way I have a request, can you make a patch that disables those pesky Plug ins and add plugins right above the ad space, those are unnecessary and take up too much room. Thanks please let me know if its possible.

October 31st, 2009 03:09
The crack does remove the ads, but it also disable video/voice chat
October 29th, 2009 23:43
Hi Everyone,
Sorry I have been away so long. I have been learning the Win32 API – a lot to learn – lol. Here is the link for the patched exe file for version 10.0.0.542. This patch removes ONLY the main window ad. For those who would like to patch their own files, here is the offset and data:
offset 735BFh: 84h -> 85h
http://www.4shared.com/file/144635570/5c36a369/YP10542.html
October 29th, 2009 00:55
Try this patch : http://rs306.rapidshare.com/files/238707182/YM.v9.0.0.2162.zip
it also has the install for messenger version 9.0.0.2162, but the ad remover that’s in the archive works for most versions out there. If not, you can install version 9.0.0.2162, cause the newer ones are basically the same.
October 9th, 2009 15:22
Lets make this simple please! Need a patched Yahoo Messenger 10.0.0.542 US. Please make it happen and post here. Past tricks/patches DO NOT WORK! If otherwise, please post the solution/patch here. Thank you very much. The ads are driving all of us crazy.
October 9th, 2009 04:06
This trick does not work on windows7×64 ym2162.
any suggestion?
October 2nd, 2009 07:50
alright I have the newest version of yahoo Messenger I installed it today its october 1st 2009….and yes it works…simple and easy directions to follow……..just use your common sense a bit and you should be fine
September 30th, 2009 23:51
editing the hosts file DOES work . . . but yahoo’s sms text messaging will no longer function. same goes if you try the new “online chat” function thru yahoo mail it also will not work.
guess i will put up with the crappy yahoo spam ads in order to preserve sms capabilities.

September 11th, 2009 07:43
Would someone please post a patched YahooMessenger.exe for us? That would be the simplest and most effective way right now, its been a few weeks since the latest 10.0 came out, thanks! Please post if theres any other working patches circulating out there
September 10th, 2009 11:10
care to elaborate on what trick you are referring to?
September 9th, 2009 20:51
i’ve tried your trick w/ ym 10.0.0.525 beta, and it worked.
thanks.
September 3rd, 2009 04:11
Does’t seem like that someone has found the offsets in the new beta.
I’m not sure where to find in there for myself
so.. please can somebody help us???
Thx
August 28th, 2009 12:49
Yes, please develop the 525 patched yahoomessenger.exe, and if possible as my suggestion, please REMOVE the Plugin buttons at the bottom of the list above the ads, the official hide version just makes it less visible, but those buttons are just like an ad, obtrusive and unnecessary PLEASE MAKE THIS CHANGE, thanks. And of course any of the other ads for webcamming filesharing and just in case they add back the text ad below the text entry field in a message window would also make it so any future patches of future builds will be simpler. Thanks!
August 28th, 2009 08:08
oh really sorry
I still meant 10.0.0.525 beta…
Hope someone can make a patch .exe from the original yahoomessenger.exe
thx in advance
August 28th, 2009 06:06
I can only find Yahoo OFFICIAL Beta 10.0.0.525 and not the 553 as mentioned right below me. Can anyone please post it on megaupload or rapidshare or any other file storage site? Thanks, and does the most recent past for earlier builds work on this version? Let me know please and keep up the good work for those making patches thanks. The most ideal would be an already modified YahooMessenger.exe ready made, thanks!

July 17th, 2009 15:06
Thanks to legman for chat/room banner remover, it is work.. and many thanks to dedndave now ad at the bottom of YM is gone…
July 14th, 2009 14:18
this is how you remove the ad in the chat room if you are using the latest version of yahoo messenger. find your host file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ect make sure its not read only first then open it in a text editor . after the line 127.0.0.1 localhost add a new line and put this. 127.0.0.0 chat.yahoo.com .close it and make it read only.exit messenger and reopen it go in a room the ad will be gone. figured this out myself nothing else worked on the new messenger
July 7th, 2009 12:53
Nope the:
Tim’s Ad Banner Remover Plus will probably remove that one – it supports 9.0.0.2162
http://www.wackyb.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10178
Did not seem to work on patching that bottom ad. If any of you guys can make a patched .EXE with the bottom of conversation window ad disappear that would be great. Thanks ahead of time.
July 5th, 2009 01:25
Actually, that ad has “been there” for several versions
Yahoo just hasn’t used it until now
Tim’s Ad Banner Remover Plus will probably remove that one – it supports 9.0.0.2162

July 4th, 2009 10:55
New ad space in 2162- its a small text based ad at the bottom of the conversation window, its not that obstructive, but anyone (dedndave etc) please post another patched .EXE to hide it, thank you.
July 3rd, 2009 21:56
hi again Mocha
if you read 155 or 160, it gives instructions to replace the original YahooMessenger.exe file with the patched one
the error you have is caused by running the patched EXE from some location other than the Yahoo Messenger install folder
July 3rd, 2009 21:54
hi Mocha
read post # 160
July 3rd, 2009 03:28
I just upgraded to Yahoo Messenger (9.0.0.2162) and followed the above mentioned Reg hack to eliminate the ads at the bottom of the window.
I restarted my system and fired up YM and the ads came back immediately.
Also d/l’d the the 9.0.0.2162 from post #155 and it failed to install, error says YImage.dll was not found, then it quits.
So, whats next?
July 1st, 2009 04:00

Heads Up!!!
Yahoo! is changing a couple things…
First, if you have more than one Yahoo! account using the
same primary e-mail address, you may lose the account.
This is a gradual change; I have seen no official announcement.
But, I wanted to make a new Yahoo! ID and in the process,
I was informed that any other account that had the same
“primary” e-mail addess would become inaccessible.
Second, I noticed that, by the end of the year, Yahoo!
intends to do away with geocities free hosted sites.
So, if you have any geocities sites bookmarked for great
info or downloads, best get crackin and get what you want.

I can vouch for Marius, thank you for the .EXE I downloaded it like a week ago, and it works just like Dedndave’s please continue to be active here Marius, your effort is much appreciated. In a way I hope Yahoo would quit releasing these builds with HARDLY any visual improvements. But yeah, I’m the type to always get nothing but the latest software. Thank you again!

I didn’t find 3780E in 2162 but I did find 3780D and changed it from 84 to 83 – worked fine

For 2162, the offset is the same as 2161. Use a hex editor and open yahoomessenger.exe and change the offset 3780E from 84 to 83. Save it and run. It will get rid off the main window ad.
May 31st, 2009 21:01
If you can’t do it,just download the Ad Banner Remover Plusv 1.0.3.9 (for all versions, including 9.0.0.2162)
May 31st, 2009 10:46
@t: i’ve changed the hex at YM 2161 & it works..
thanks
but how do you know which offset must be changed to remove the ads?
May 29th, 2009 10:54
I have removed just the main window ad. I haven’t even searched for other ads…
the IM window ad is not annoying and you can close it with a mouse click..
May 29th, 2009 07:16
Hi Marius,
About you’re patched .exe..can you just confirm if you have killed just the buddy list ad or all of the ads?
I’m wanting to get rid of all ads (I know how to patch the buddy list ad) but havn’t got the .exe fully sussed out yet for a complete ad free job..but I’m sure it’s possible.
If you havn’t done it I’ll keep at it (wink.)

May 23rd, 2009 23:04
For 2161, use a hex editor and open yahoomessenger.exe and change the offset 3780E from 84 to 83. Save it and run. It will get rid off the main window ad.

download from filehippo.com yahoo messenger 9.0.0.1912. this registry hack will work upto 1912 version. i dont recommend using .exe/.com hacks.. it contains trojans.. even you have the best antivirus installed.

April 25th, 2009 23:20
‘Coz i want to clean/remove everything and re-install a new one. It’s ok, i already figured it out
Thank’s.
April 25th, 2009 22:32
@YM
I don’t know why you’d want to get rid of the folders under Messenger. I’d leave em be.
res_msgr.dll is a file that holds all the resources for YM to function. It has most of the menu text for different languages, as well as many of the icons and other images used to make the program visible. I doubt you can make Messenger work without that file.
April 25th, 2009 22:29
@Chan
I use a simple disassembler and a hex editor.
I write programs in ASM. Understanding assembly language takes a large effort. But, the hex editor I use is Mael’s HxD. I use a few different disassemblers, but for this, I use a simple one called disasm by Sang Cho.
http://www.geocities.com/~sangcho/disasm.html
http://mh-nexus.de/en/downloads.php?product=HxD
April 19th, 2009 23:34
Thank’s dedndave. Also i’m trying to delete all the folders in the YM program files, but there are four folders left that just won’t go away
, i get a message that says cannot delete res_msgr:access denied. Make sure disk is not full or write-protected.
Do you have any idea how I can clean up YM on program files? I already unistalled my YM and removed the yahoo folder from regedit.
Thank’s for your help.
April 19th, 2009 17:07
dedndave, its work great..
but how do you create the new .exe files?
I have no idea have to modified an .exe file like that.. would you give me some tips?
April 19th, 2009 06:25
dedndave, I added you on yahoo messenger(as music_lover@#@# – 4 numbers at the end)
you accepted me, but you are never online..
April 18th, 2009 19:15
oops !
that should read…
you need to rename the patch file to YahooMessenger.exe
I missed an “s” – lol
– dedndave
April 18th, 2009 19:14
@YM
you need to rename the patch file to YahooMesenger.exe
then, locate the Messenger folder
(usually C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger)
delete or rename the original YahooMessenger.exe file (something like YM_Original.exe)
finally, place the patched file into the Messenger folder

As yet, I have not learned to write plug-ins for Messenger. It is something I am interested in. If I am not mistaken, in order for a plug-in to work, it must be approved by the Yahoo Plug-In Management team. I am not sure about this. You might try wackyB – they have many plug-in author gurus.

can you please create a plug-in for windows media player 11 that will display in my Yahoo! Messenger 9 status the song I am listening too?
there are many plug-ins for Yahoo Messenger 8, but they are not working on 9.

Thank you dedndave. Great work!
March 26th, 2009 04:39
thanks for your help
March 26th, 2009 04:24
@ “someone”
I am not sure what you mean. The ads should
not re-appear if you replaced the YahooMessneger.exe file with the patched one.
As for Ymsgr_tray.exe, I do not like the little grey icon in the task bar notification
area when I am signed out, so I always rename
Ymsgr_tray.exe to Ymsgr_tray.ex_ , or you can
just delete the file if you never want the
option of getting the icon back.
@ “Messifan”
This patch only removes the main window ad.
If you want a patch that removes most of the other ads, I suggest Tim or Dermot’s patches.
I intend to write a similar patch program
when I get some time. I also want to remove the chat transition window. But, at the moment, I am buried in a few other projects.
– dedndave
March 26th, 2009 01:19
It would be nice to also have a patched Ymsgr_tray.exe
because if you use “Close & Sign out” option, the ads reappear once you login again.
March 25th, 2009 20:02
many thx for the latest patch
but one question… how can I get rid from the chat-advert?? first the place is blank but after a while there’s an advert again under the main chat window..
anyway thx for patching this fast

thank you dedndave for cleaning up some of Yahoo’s mess… I had to update from v7 because the voice quality was keep getting worse in the old version, and was surprised to see this new v9 uses 3 times more memory than v7 LMAO way to go Yahoo! 20MB compared to 67MB

so if there’s a chance to patch this one.. would be great
thx in advance
February 22nd, 2009 08:57
yes – the HOSTS file can disable the ads, but you lose a couple other features – if i remember correctly, you lose chat and the plug-ins selector
by patching a single byte in the exe file, you disable the ads without losing any functionality
– dedndave
February 22nd, 2009 07:54
A better/easier way to disable yahoo ads is to add the line:
127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com
into file
c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts [2000/xp/vista (also i think windows 7)]
can be added from start->run->echo ‘127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com’ >> ‘c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts’
Your yahoo insider will be unavailable also.
No additional patch is required.

February 10th, 2009 04:22
The correct folder is:
C:\Documents and Settings\(WindowsUserName)\Local Settings\Application Data\Y!Msgr\skins\Default
I had pasted it into the blog with less than and greater than symbols rather than parens. – The blog doesn’t like that, thinking it is an HTML tag.

Ooops – my mistake – both tricks are per-user (dunno what I was thinking – lol)
– dedndave
February 10th, 2009 02:23
Here’s a little trick that many will enjoy. I absolutely hate the mouse-over contact information cards. Some users may like them. I find not only the pop-up feature annoying, but
it also reflects “Update” information that is sometimes incorrect. Mine says my mood changed from happy to excited to special and back to happy again. I never changed anything to give the server that impression. Perhaps it is reflected from the emoticons I may have used in a conversation. This information comes from the server in the Temporary Internet Files in a file named “vitality.html”. I also find the use of IE annoying.
If you want to disable the cards, find the folder “C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\Y!Msgr\skins\Default”. In that folder, you will find a few xml files. One is named ContactCard.ContactCard.xml. Delete the file and create a folder of the same name in its’ place. After that, you may have to sign in and out of Messenger twice, but the contact info cards will be gone. Also gone is the IE download of the vitality files.
If you want to keep the contact cards, but remove the “update” info and the IE vitality files, add 2 URL values to the registry key “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\yahoo\pager\YUrl”. Under that key, create 2 new string-type values. Here is what a .REG file would look like:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\yahoo\pager\YUrl]
“vitality banner”=”*”
“vitality proxy server”=”*”
A .REG file to turn them back on would look like this:
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\yahoo\pager\YUrl]
“vitality banner”=-
“vitality proxy server”=-
Notice that the trick to remove the cards is on a per-user basis, while disabling the vitality “updates” is on a per-computer basis.
Enjoy – dedndave
Tim and Dermot – you guys may want to add this to your patch programs.
February 9th, 2009 23:01
Sorry Kevin,
Yes – you must replace the existing YahooMessenger.exe file with the patched one.
Follow these steps:
1) locate the folder that contains the yahoo messenger program (normally, C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger)
2) rename the YahooMessenger.exe file to something else, like YahooMessenger.bak or YM_orig.exe
3) copy the patched exe for your version (such as 2128.exe) in that folder
4) rename the patched exe to YahooMessenger.exe
after that, the ads on the main messenger window will be gone

January 29th, 2009 00:21
Hi Colin,
Yes – once you have patched the EXE file for 9.0.0.2034, you can block the urls.xml download by creating a folder of that name and use the registry YUrls key to either block or localize the ads (Webcam Upload Ad and Change Room Banner are not ads, at all). That gets rid of everything but the Chat Transition Ad.
As for the “temp” files in the Messenger folder, these are xml files generated each time you open and use an IM window. I suspect it was the intention of Yahoo! to delete them after the IM window was closed or, perhaps, when the program was closed. The problem with getting rid of them via a patch is, when to do it and where the filename resides in memory.
This is one thing they appear to have fixed in 9.0.0.2112. I may be able to replicate the code from that version to 9.0.0.2034. I will look into it prior to releasing my next patch.

January 28th, 2009 19:30
To dedndave
Well i agree with you Dave in that the best of the last two versions is 8.1.0.421 being both reliable (and easy to patch the ads lol.)
Your remarks 9.0.0.2034 interest me..of all the 9x to date that one to me seems as good as it gets so far with 9 BUT it does have the irritating TEMP FILE bug (dumpimg temp files into the main Messenger directory instead of the cache folder.) If that could be fixed I’d be willing to use it. I don’t suppose with all you’re tinkerings with that build that you’ve either looked at that problem or could look into fixing it maybe. I know how to get rid of the ads in that build I just need an .exe that is TEMP FILE bug free.
For the moment I’m going back to 8.1.0.421 as 9.0.0.2112 seems the worst so far from Yahoo..ads or not.
Cheers..Colin

January 23rd, 2009 02:27
hi Colin,
the two posts are the same – i repeated it for “c” (post #57)
yes – it seems that 2112 hangs in chat – and i also noticed that it drops offline – these are problems in the un-patched exe – that is one thing i will say for 2034 – it stays online better than any other version – i continue working on 2112 because i know that yahoo will have another revision soon (they always do if a version is buggy), and what i learn on 2112 i can apply to the new one –
i have made some other mods to 2034 that i have not yet posted, that makes it quite livable – i managed to get rid of all ads except the chat transition ad – i managed to get rid of the mouse-over contact info cards – if i could fix a few other things in that version, i would say it is better than 8.1.0.421 (currently my favorite) – if you want my advice, 8.1.0.421 or 9.0.0.2034 are best so far – with 8.1.0.421, you can disable the marketing data collector (yserver.exe) – with 9.0.0.2034, you cannot, but it stays online better – dedndave
January 22nd, 2009 18:44
To dedndave
Dave..what are the differences between the patched .exe’s offered on the 16th and 20th January please?
Also you say 9.0.0.2112 freezes..is that due to the patching or is it down to Yahoos programming from the start?
I’ve been able to do my own patching in the past but 9.0.0.2112 has got me foxed (apart from the buddy list and change room ads) and I’ve just about had enough of it..I don’t like 9x anyway and may well go back to 8x which was far better and stable.
I’d like to try your effort but if it’s freezing continualy it seems rather pointless to be honest.
Cheers..Colin

1) they have made it more difficult to remove the other ads
2) the program freezes up – i am thinking of going back to 9.0.0.2034 and making it work as well as i can and ignoring 9.0.0.2112

@RaT
It should be the same as the version you installed. If you are not sure, you may use RegEdit to view the system registry under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Pager\YUrl.
Under that key, look at the “Tutorials” value.
If you installed the US version, the url will be http://help.yahoo.com/us/tutorials/ms9/index.html
I know that isn’t very simple, but Yahoo! does not put the country code with the version in the help menu.

btw – i see a few minor changes in 2112 – i do NOT see any real big improvements – this is typical of yahoo! – the biggest change from one version to the next always seems to be how they manage advertisements – not features and functions – i get the impression they change a few things here and there to justify an update – but the real meat is in how ads are handled

this idea might work for messenger 8 perhaps but sure didnt work for mine. the ad is still there, even after i changed it. Heck when it showed back up after a restart of the program the pesky ad laughs at your febal attempt to rid it, so i went back in there and elimiated yurl and local as well, and guess what boys and girls, its still there even after all that. So evidently I have a yahoo messenger 9 that defys all logic or you geniuses do not know what your talking about.

And dedndave is right, doing that “127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com” thing does cause other things to fail.
December 31st, 2008 12:02
Ok, so I’m working with version 9.0.0.2034
First I did the registry (…\pager\yurl) with those added “*” in it. That did nothing.
Then I also set the …\pager\Locale setting to 0. That didn’t help either.
Then I applied the patch that dedndave made. It displayed one error, something about Cannot execute C:\Progra~1\…blablabla\messenger\ympatch.com
but then says process is complete.
still no luck with getting rid of that ad on the bottom.
The only thing that had any effect on the ad was the “127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com” edit to the HOSTS file. All it did was cause the ad to just show as some http navigational error. Didn’t get rid of the whole extra bit of the window that pops out at the bottom.
By the way I’m on Vista Home Premium. I’m not going nuts over the ads, I just want the window to be as compact as possible.
December 27th, 2008 01:55
Not good to disable insider site in hosts file.
That disables other desirable features.
However, if you use the simple patch I wrote earlier, you may combine that with other techniques to eliminate most of the other ads without losing features. Here is my 1,2,3,4 list:
1) use my simple patch
2) replace the desirable URLS from urls.xml file with URLS in HKCU\Software\Yahoo\Pager\YUrls
3) lock the filename “urls.xml” by creating a folder with that name, instead of a file
4) rather than replacing ALL of the ads with “*”, localize some of them – they are not all ads – some are informational panes – localize these: (3) webcam ads, webcam upload ad, change room banner
there are a few other little tricks, as well
I swear – my update is almost finished – lol
– dedndave

I am looking for the full installer for version 7.0.0.247 (7.86 MB). Filehippo only has the download installer. I have tried FreeCreed and OldApps, as well as talking to John Kirschner, and searching the web. I did manage to find it on a Russian site, but the file is corrupted, and my Russian is terrible – no way to let them know to fix it. I know this is a really old version, but I want to try and write a multi patch for it (after I get finished with the ver 8/9 updates). – ThanX – dedndave
December 12th, 2008 16:27
By the way, to edit a batch file, right-click on it, then left-click on Edit. It may ask you if you if you want to “Run” it or not – click “Run” or “Yes”. To be more clear about which lines to edit, the 5th line in the original file is:
set YMPATH=%programfiles%\Yahoo!\Messenger
and the 9th line is:
%SystemDrive%
These parameters that have “%” at both ends are called environment variables. It is a DOS mechanism of determining certain information about your computer. the DOS “set” command is how to set one up. In my batch file, for example, I use “YMPath” as an environment variable so that I only have to figure out the path one time in the batch file. If you are running a system with program files in places other than C:\Program Files, or with the OS in places other than C:\Windows or C:\WinNT, I suggest you familiarize yourself with environment variables and the DOS commands to edit them.
December 12th, 2008 16:04
HiJim,
You may edit the batch file (YM_Patch.bat), which is similar to a text file. In the example below, I will demonstrate the edits if the Messenger program were located in “D:\My Programs”.
On the 5th line, change the command to:
set YMPath=D:\My Programs\Yahoo!\Messenger
This line must contain the drive letter and the full path of the location of the YahooMessenger.exe program file, and must not end with a “\”.
On the 9th line, change the command to:
D:
This line must contain the drive letter only,
followed by a “:”.
That should do it for you, Jim. This raises an interesting point. The best way for me to ascertain the drive and path of the Messenger program is to query the registry and write a program to parse the resultant text file so that it may be turned into a batch command. This is not that difficult, but I don’t have time to do it at the moment. I was really hoping that users who have the program located anywhere other than C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger would know how to edit batch files to get where they wanted – lol. So much for that. In the future, I will make it easier to edit the batch file and make a note of it in the read me file.

Removing ads from versions 9.0.0.2018 and 9.0.0.2034 is a bit more difficult than previous versions. I wrote this patch that removes ONLY the main messenger window ads for those 2 versions:

editing the host file did not work for me .
Vista 64bit nor did any of the other tricks.
still have the little ads at the bottom but I have been able to block the hosts of most of them through my firewall, but some of the ads are on a host that if u block it , it slows down other things like composing an e-mail . It wont load cause its trying to load an ad first that u have blocked, so u have to wait about 15 seconds when it times out trying and then will load.
November 13th, 2008 06:23
When you run NOTEPAD in Vista, right click on Notpad and select “Run As Administrator” and you will be able to edit system files. This prevents virus from editing your host files without your knowledge.
Good luck!

Go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ and open “host” with notepad and add this on the last line: 127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com save it then restart the messenger it’s the ads is gone..this should this should work with all Yahoo Messenger’s VS’s.

It is stupid to block insider.msg.yahoo.com
This server holds no ads that are in messenger
It is the server for..
- Roomlists
- Display pictures
- Yahoo! Insider
I do not recommend you do this.

The registry tip doesn’t work anymore, maybe because Yahoo changed their code.
*** REMOVE YAHOO MESSENGER ADS SAFELY:
Here’s a safest and effective way to block Yahoo Messenger Ads for ANY VERSION.
- NO need to edit the registry.
- NO need for EXE Patches that has Trojans.
- ALL YOU NEED is Notepad.
*** BLOCK ADS BY BLOCKING THE AD SERVER:
1. Open Notepad.
2. Open the following file:
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
3. Add the following line at the end of the text file:
127.0.0.1 insider.msg.yahoo.com
Feel free to blog about this, just give me credit.
