Use Vista SendTo Folder to Add or Delete Send To Menu Items or Shortcuts

When right clicking on any items or objects in Windows Vista such as folders, files or shortcuts, the right click contextual menu item will has an option called “Send To”. Mouse over and expand “Send To” option will then reveal plenty of destination location shortcuts that the files can be sent to, such as hard disk drive, external USB storage device, folder, desktop, or a program or executable for actions such as emailing.

Send To menu

Windows Vista adds several default frequently used shortcuts in “Send To” sub-menu, such as Compressed (zipped) Folder, Desktop (create shortcut), Documents, Mail Recipient, Fax, local disk drives and optical CD/DVD-ROM drives. The list will grow as users install more and more programs, which will create and add more shortcuts and destination to “SendTo” menu folder with or without users’ consent.

As the “Sent To” items list grows, the speed to open and show the “Send To” menu items will slow down, beside making picking the choice action harder too. Some users may want to housekeep and delete away some unused or seldom touched shortcuts or destination in “Send To” folder. On the other hand, some users may want to add and put more custom shortcuts into the “SendTo” folder so that the location can be easily accessible or the files can be sent straight and be opened by the selected application.

Vista stores most user shortcuts in Send To menu in SendTo folder. So, to manage, add or delete location shortcuts or program shorts in Vista “Send To” right click contextual menu, open up the SendTo folder by typing the following command in Start Search text box.

%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

Alternatively, users can run Windows Explorer and navigate to the following path, after unhide the hidden files and folders in Folder Options:

C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

Any changes to items inside the SendTo folder will reflect in the right click Vista “Send To” menu. For program shortcuts or location shortcuts that no longer needed, delete the shortcuts away.

To add an item into “Send To” menu, create a shortcut to the program or folder location in the “SendTo” folder. Users can also drag and drop to create the shortcut or copy the shortcut from another location. Once done, the new shortcut will be shown immediately on right click Send To menu, and users can now pipe and open any file on the target program, or send and copy the files and folders to users’ favorite folder or drive location.

Users can also customize and edit the icon for the shortcut in SendTo folder, which will also be reflected in Send To menu to further differentiate the favorite Send To destination.

This doesn’t work for me. I’ve added a link to %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo but it doesn’t show-up in the ’send to’ context menu, even after rebooting. I’m in a domain being controlled by several group policies which might be a bit of the problem.
