closing explorer from task bar and starting it again as explained by sherru ( response no.330 really worked well…my missing battery icon is enabled this way

Well, this doesn’t help me much. I go onto the Notification Area, but then it show the boxes, however I am unable to tick the box, because it’s blocked, or something..
help?!

Hi Guys,

Some of these solutions you seem to have to do it every time. to stop it for good you need to disable universal plug and play. This page is from Microsoft, so they shuold know!

I just experienced this today after installing Avast Anti-viral software. My battery icon disappeared and it was not available when I tried to check the box. For a simple method that took 5 minutes give this a try.

1. Close all programs, and shut down the laptop.
2. Remove all power supplies (battery and power cord)
3. Drain remaining power by pushing the power on button for 30 seconds(while you have no power supply)
4. Put the battery back in and boot up the computer
5. Once booted completely, right click the system tray and select properties
6. The boxes should now all be selectable

I hope this helps someone else who thought all was lost.

I’ve suffered with this Vista problem for over a year. The solution that works reliably is the “kill explorer.exe” solution – this always works, and doesn’t require a restart. Thanks for your help everyone – I got the solution from here.

The solution of ending the explorer process and restarting it works perfect!!

You have to make sure and go back into the Taskbar and select power and network status,etc.
