Hi,

I've installed Windows 7 Beta on an older laptop
and it's a little slow, but, works well. I've
never run Vista and probably won't.... But, I
had the same problems running Real VNC on the
Win7 system. The Ultra VNC works great and I
can still use Real VNC on my other machines to
connect to the Win 7 machine.

Maybe I'll completely switch over to UltraVNC
on all of my hosts!

Regards,
Ed

@ Brian - This didn't work for me. Any other ideas? Everytime I try and connect, I get to the password prompt and then I get booted out - saying Authentication error - I know the password is correct.

free VNC version "doesnt work" with Vista due to Session Zero security protocols; but like anything else in this world, there are ways AROUND it.

read below........

install the executable onto client machine.
hit "Next"
click radio "I accept agreement"
hit "next" for destination folder
hit "next" for full installation of server and viewer"
hit "next" for Start menu folder placement.
checkmark "create desktop Icon; UNcheck "register and configure for Server Mode"
hit "next"
click" install"
click"next"
click "finish"
go to Start/all programs/real VNC/click VNC server (user-mode) (run as administrator)
set a password.

go to "Start/all programs/real VNC/right-click VNC server mode (run as administrator).
click Run VNC Server.
put "Run VNC server" into Startup folder; as (copy here).

test from your own workstation to ensure ability to VNC into Vista client machine.
you should be able to VNC into it from either an XP or Vista machine.

hope this helps. I owe other people so much for putting their advice on the net for this issue.

Good luck and God bless.

[...] Note that if you just want to be able to remote control the desktop of the computer running on Windows XP Home Edition, it may be easier and wiser to use the free VNC as alternative instead. One such VNC server and client is UltraVNC. [...]

[...] Windows XP Home Edition (HE) does not come with or support Remote Desktop, or Terminal Services feature. There is Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) client which allows user to connect to remote host, but now accepting any remote desktop connection to the Windows XP Home PC. However, there is way to install and enable Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in Windows XP using the trick below.
