Download UltraVNC for Windows Vista Support (VNC Alternative)
RealVNC has RealVNC Personal Edition and RealVNC Enterprise Edition that support Windows Vista, but unfortunately the software programs are not free and require a license and serial key. RealVNC Free Edition does not support Windows Vista, and users have to depends on various workaround to run VNC on Vista. Luckily there is free alternative for users who need to run VNC server on Windows Vista system.
The alternative is UltraVNC (UVNC) version 1.0.4. UltraVNC is similar to RealVNC, both is free download and uses VNC (Virtual Network Computing) protocol to remote control screen of another computer via network or Internet. UltraVNC features more functionalities in addition to remote control, such as an encryption plugin to secure connection between client and server, file transfer support, chat functionality, and various authentication methods. Best of all, UltraVNC is cross-compatible and cross-working with any other client and server implementations of VNC, including RealVNC and TightVNC.
VNC, client or server when installed and ran on Vista, faces various problems and issues such as WinVNC.exe cannot send the Ctrl-Alt-Del sequence, unable to capture logon screen to sign in on boot up due to session isolation security feature in Vista, and due to User Account Control (UAC) privileges elevation feature, VNC executable cannot respond interactively with application and desktop running in higher level of elevation.
UltraVNC has released UltraVNC v1.0.4 release candidates which has added support and compatibility with Windows Vista. The latest RC6 beta build release is pretty stable and fully Vista compatible. If you’ve no confident in test build, the final release of UVNC 1.0.4 is scheduled to go live for free download on January 1, 2008 for 32-bit (x86) edition of Vista, and January 2, 2008 for 64-bit (x64) edition of Vista.

Hi,
I’ve installed Windows 7 Beta on an older laptop
and it’s a little slow, but, works well. I’ve
never run Vista and probably won’t…. But, I
had the same problems running Real VNC on the
Win7 system. The Ultra VNC works great and I
can still use Real VNC on my other machines to
connect to the Win 7 machine.
Maybe I’ll completely switch over to UltraVNC
on all of my hosts!
Regards,
Ed

@ Brian – This didn’t work for me. Any other ideas? Everytime I try and connect, I get to the password prompt and then I get booted out – saying Authentication error – I know the password is correct.

free VNC version “doesnt work” with Vista due to Session Zero security protocols; but like anything else in this world, there are ways AROUND it.
read below……..
install the executable onto client machine.
hit “Next”
click radio “I accept agreement”
hit “next” for destination folder
hit “next” for full installation of server and viewer”
hit “next” for Start menu folder placement.
checkmark “create desktop Icon; UNcheck “register and configure for Server Mode”
hit “next”
click” install”
click”next”
click “finish”
go to Start/all programs/real VNC/click VNC server (user-mode) (run as administrator)
set a password.
go to “Start/all programs/real VNC/right-click VNC server mode (run as administrator).
click Run VNC Server.
put “Run VNC server” into Startup folder; as (copy here).
test from your own workstation to ensure ability to VNC into Vista client machine.
you should be able to VNC into it from either an XP or Vista machine.
hope this helps. I owe other people so much for putting their advice on the net for this issue.
Good luck and God bless.
