If you can't access the backend administration anymore because legacy is turned off, you can edit it in the database.
Go to _plugings, scroll to System - Legacy, and change the value of ''published'' to 1.
Then it should work again.

Hi I've just come across this while doing my rounds search for a solution to this problem. Working on clients site, I found on my local machine switch on and off the legacy mode is a breeze. Especially when you need to be in legacy mode just to install certain plugins. When i went online i found the plugin line for the legacy plugin was greyed out. It was so odd. What a waste of time I had trying to resolve the issue, because I tried another browser which I had to login to of course, there it was! It was ok, so i could enable the legacy mode! Then I realised it was greyed out again, but in the same browser this time, which was after I had installed the plugin that i needed to be in legacy mode for. So then I logged out and back in again and it was fine again. So then I could disable legacy mode again. How flipping wierd is that!

Your Extension appears to be written for an older version of Joomla!. You must enable the System - Legacy Plugin in the Plugin Manager if you wish to complete this task.

thanks .!

With the error message...
"Direct Access to this location is not allowed."
I Cannot open the admin backend! Your post started out down that track but then gave no info about how to set 1.0 compatibility in this situation. I assume there are db changes that can be done?

for those who have problems with the fact that the System-legacy appears grey and not clicable:
access the plugin manager not from the install plugin-> plugin tab but from the top menu:
top menu > extensions (drop down) > plugin manager
there it should be selectable
