Sorry did not work, adding any of these ideas mentioned here kills my website completely - everything becomes 500 internal server error...

'Note: A lot has been saying about writable folder. In some cases, depending on owner and group, you may have to set the permissions to 777 (full read, write and execute) in order for Apache to be able to write into the directory.'

following this advice, in 000webhost.com this was all I had to do in order to be able to upload new templates to Joomla:

1-login to your cpanel
2-click on 'file manager'
3- once inside file manager open the folder 'public_html'.
4-tick the boxes of whatever folder(s) you want to make writable, like 'templates', 'media', 'images' and so on.
4-Click on 'Chmod' (top right of this page) to be taken to the page in which you can change permissions called 'Chmod directories and files'.
5-TICK ALL THE BOXES until you get a Chmod value of 777
6-Also tick 'Chmod also the subdirectories within this directory' and 'Chmod also the files within this directory'
7-Save it and you should be done.
8-refresh your Joomla admin interface and all the files that you have changed permissions for should be writable now.

THANKS 4 UR HELP

- I can't change .htaccess without creating a 500 error
- I dont understand ur "adding php.ini" to every subfolder so I skipped it...
- I can't find a globals.php within my Joomla! (1.5) folder.

It is indeed cleaner to have the session directory being green in Joomla instead of red (unwritable).

The strange thing is that my site still works fine without the session directory being writable.
