The "defaults write" solution that Luke and Troo mentioned made my life better. In case you DO want to make an exception and open in a new window (e.g. Gmail chat pop-out), press the Alt/Option key when clicking. (I started writing this reply in order to ask how to do this but ended up answering my own question, so thought I'd share)

This is way simpler and works like a charm. Nice post though:)

Quit Safari
Open Terminal.app
Enter defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true and press enter
Open Safari
Notice that links that used to open in a new window will now open in a new tab

I'm accustomed to the tab behavior of Firefox, where I ONLY have to click and hold down my mouse button to get a pop-up menu offering a choice of opening the link in a new window, opening in a new tab, saving the link, or whatever. In Safari I have to hold down the Control key while clicking a link in order to access the same kind of menu - or else hold down the Command button while simply clicking the link to open it in a new tab (my most common choice). This can be more of a hassle sometimes because it requires the use of both hands. Does anyone know how to make Safari act the way my Firefox browser does in this respect? Thanks if you do!!

None of these suggestions work. I have the features selected in the "tabs" section of preferences. What is my problem? MacBook running Leopard and Safari 3.2.1.

You can change the default behavior of Safari by using Terminal. To change it back, use the code below but change
true
to
false
.

1) Quit Safari

2) Open Terminal.app

3) Enter
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
and press enter

4) Open Safari

5) Notice that links that used to open in a new window will now open in a new tab

Hi.
Thanks a lot for this tip.
I got so nervous of this simple thing not working in Safari on Mac. I solved it with SafariStand. Very nice.
Thanks again. Cheers, T.

Nice article. I'm running Tiger and I'm thinking of switching to Safari for some quick and dirty browsing tasks. In general I'm locked into Firefox because I've got my plugins set up sweet, but Firefox for Mac still seems a bit buggy and slow to me.

Argh. I love my Mac but there are certain features, like this _blank window/tab issue, that just seem like no brainers, yet the Apple folks stall. Even IE7 can do it? Ouch. One more reason to stick to FF, I guess.
