How to Restore iPhone with Old 1.0.2 Firmware Skip or Bypass 1.1.1
The new firmware version 1.1.1 from Apple for iPhone can render the phone unusable, where the upgraded software will check for iPhones that has been hacked or unlocked illegally, and kill the phone, effectively turn iPhone into useless non-functional iBrick. Thus if you have unlocked the SIM lock of the phone for use on a carrier other than AT&T especially those users from out of US such as Asia and Europe, and have jail broke and hacked the iPhone to install third-party programs and apps, you will never want to upgrade to fw 1.1.1, yet.
Sometimes, due to some issues or troubleshooting requirement, you may need to restore the iPhone. However, you also have to avoid or bypass firmware update 1.1.1 and only restore using version 1.0.2 instead. In this case, follow the steps in the following guide to restore the iPhone using firmware 1.0.2.
Well, the steps are actually pretty similar to how to restore the iPhone normally, and the steps to downgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2.
- Turn off iPhone – Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the red slider. Ignore this step if your iPhone is already off.

- Press and hold down the Home button for about 10 seconds until a yellow triangle with a text which says Please Connect to iTunes appears.

- Plug the iPhone into Mac or Windows PC. Release the button if you haven’t.
- Run and open iTunes if it’s not already opened yet.
- iTunes will prompt a message that says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.
- You will be taken to the iPhone pane. Hold down the Options key (in Mac) or Shift key (in Windows) and then click on Restore (note that when the button should be pressed until Restore is clicked).
- Step above will oepn up a window to allow you to select the firmware software file you would like to use to restore to iPhone. Browse through the folders (Located in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates in Mac OS machine), and select the old firmware file named as iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw.
- Wait for the full restoration process to complete, and the iPhone will be restored to state based on firmware 1.0.2, rather than performing the default action to automatically updating the phone to the newer 1.1.1 when you restore using iTunes.

I got an iPhone with 1.02 or 1.1.1 not sure, then updated it to 2.0 but it requires me to activate with ATT and no thx. so im trying to go restore it, how can i do that?

have followed steps to restore to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1 (had 1.0.2 and wanted to upgrade to 1.1.3 – revirginised first). got the yellow triangle, connected to iTunes, selected 1.1.1 FW from list – get an error (1). So I downloaded 1.0.2 so that I could restore from that – when I select that from the restore menu, nothing at all happens.
!!!!!!
what to do?
any help and suggestions welcome
(have been through all suggested steps several times)

pressing both keys at the same time and holding them for few seconds does go in to the recovery mode – but instead of showing the yellow hologram, it shows itunes + plug; though it goes to the recovery mode, it does not give an option to choose the firmware file of your own; rather, it downloads it and installs by itself. (now i’m stuck with 1.1.2) -

Eric,
The method here of holding the HOME button until the red triangle didn’t work for me either. (My iPhone was a refrub that came with 1.0 on it)
So what I did was
1. Connect the phone to my PowerBook G4
Nope
2. This started up iTunes automatically
3. iTunes prompted me first to backup my phone (ok, that’s nice … though I only had like 4 numbers and my mac email) 4. Then it gave me the choices to update … or restore
5. I went the restore route using “Option” + “Restore” allowed me to navigate to the 1.0.2 zip file
6. About 10 minutes later, the iphone restarted, resynched, and then restarted again. Do I want to update to 1.1.1
So now my phone is at 1.0.2 and ready to play with
I usually triangulate these issues … I suspect there’s a bit of variety in these phones
Good luck.
Steve

I have found the above method wont work. Holding the home key when the iphone is off does not put it into recovery mode anymore.
I hold the button and nothing happens.
So I am stuck with the 1.1.1 =(
And you have to be online for the restoration now so it downloads 1.1.1.
I did a restore and it now is a blue screen that flashes to a green one. It shows the plug to the Iphone and the Itunes icon.
