I had the same problem. Fortunately for me it happened right after I uninstalled "JAVA(TM) 6 update 7". So I restored Vista back to the point before that uninstall. Now the Windows sounds are back and YouTube videos have sound again.

I have tried every single thing on this website but nothing worked. All I did was upgrade my Vista to service pack 2 and behold I now have sound! I suggest others try the same :)

To any others like me who trawled online and tried every solution without success, I've come up with a fix. The wavemapper registry fix is soooooooo close!
1. In Vista, switch off UAC (this step may not be necessary but was on the machine i was fixing)
2. Get hold of anybody with a working Vista machine and ask them for their msacm32.drv file (in C:\Windows\System32 folder). U can gladly email me on zzadz@hotmail.com and i'll send u mine.
3. Copy their file into ur C:\Windows\System32 folder-if like me you already have a msacm32.drv fle that you ASSUMED to be working ok, rename the new file msacm32.1.drv
4. Open regedit, go to LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION\DRIVERS 32 and open the WAVEMAPPER key.
5. Change the value to msacm32.1.drv

This works straight away - i guess the msacm32.drv file is corrupt and Windows has no way of telling you.

Please pass this solution on - i cant find it anywhere else on the net!

This fix worked a treat for me. I had been trying to fix this problem for nearly 3 months. The only thing I might mention is the new version of the software automatically fixes the busted codecs and there is no longer an option in the menu.

Cheers

The K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool is also available as a separate download.
http://www.codecguide.com/download_other.htm#codectweaktool

If the fix is invisible, then make sure you run the tool on an administrator user account.

If the fix is grayed out, then it means that this particular fix is not needed. Your problem has some other cause (bad driver?) and will require a different fix.
