Fix Windows No System Sound and Audio Problem

Windows system does not gives you sound and audio suddenly or despite sound card or audio device is present and working previously? Windows XP, 2000, NT, 2003 or even Vista computers may lost Windows audio and system sounds output due to the mess on file system or registry that created or left by third party utilities after installation and uninstallation, or corrupted and missing codecs, a component necessary to decompress and decode media files so that can be playback by Windows system.

When the Windows no sound problem occurs, the symptoms include users do not hear any Windows system sound even though the volume control on speakers have turned on, and all audio mixers and EQs is not muted. Users cannot hear sound from mouse start navigation clicks, Windows startup sound, messenger’s user online or incoming message notification alert and etc. Even Flash video clips hosted on YouTube, Google Video, Dailymotion, CNet Video, MetaCafe, and etc will not output the sound, even though video playback fine without problem.

If you have no sound problem only on Flash objects (video on Youtube, Flash games and etc), try out the Flash no sound registry fix, especially on wavemapper registry key. Else if you try to uninstall and install drivers again, restore to previous system restore point, changing sound card or switch it to another PCI slot will not solve the no sound problem.

Here is a simple trick to fix Windows system no sound problem. The trick works by using a tool built into K-Lite Codec Pack.

  1. Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack version 3.3.0 Full from here or here, or choose other versions from more mirrors here. You can deselect most components that you don’t need, except Codec Tweak Tool under the Tools section.
  2. After installed, click on Start button, then go to All Programs -> K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> Codec Tweak Tool.
  3. In the Codec Tweak Tool window, tick the check box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound.

  4. Click on Next button, and your Windows no sound problem should be fixed, and working as usual.

followed this advice but i downloaded the newest full version of the k-lite codec from http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm and installed it. was very helpful since it automatically detected and recommended to unistall any existing codecs that would interfere with the k-lite codec. during installation, any problems with the registry were also fixed. after installing i went to youtube and my sound was back. thanks!!!

Yesss. I was suffering for a long time. My vista stopped system sounds and web page sounds. tried everything but klite solved it. thanks a lot.
plus i have many codecs for which i will not have to download and install mass programs; they cause more trouble than they solve. cheers.

Used your download and tried the fix. Still no sound.
Previously, I reloaded the lost sndvol32.exe file and that restored my icon. Also, tried the registry cures, expensive but no luck.
I have no sound from either speakers or headphones. With the exception of a barely perceptible peep in my head phones when I test the asterisk sound in the control panel. I’m running XP on a Toshiba satellite.

I’m so pissed at this site. I downloaded it fooled into thinking it would work and all it has done it make it worse. Before it was only my internet but after downloading this program ALL sound on my computer has ceased. I love music and cannot live without it and I’m so mad your program has affected my itunes, windows media player etc. I don’t know if this has happened to anyone else but if it has is there any way to fix it?

I have tried ALL things listed for the NO sound issue. I have a Dell with Vista Home and cannot watch ANY videos (i.e. youtube or her any flash media). I downloaded countless programs and uninstalled those that havent worked. I did the K-lite and the wavenmapper (which I already had – and then redid “just in case”) and the fixit program for no sound suggested on the other blog site (My Digital Life). STILL nothing! Any suggestions now?

THANK YOU! I also had “jpui”s situation where says no problem detected, but I think it fixed it when it was installing, because when I closed the program everything was good to go! While K-lite was installing it told me it found a problem and asked if you want to fix it, that’s when I think it did its magic.

I would like to mention about this post as the same way as what Robert did.

Hey, I am working as a computer tech since 1983 on S/W, H/W, Network, Integration, Service… almost on everything.
But I’ve been strugling to fix “no system sound” problem since last August. I did uninstall and reinstall codec’s reinstall Windows OS and put a new sound card with new driver as well… Still no change…. -.-
Finally I found this post today,,, followed the directions as above and everything back to normal!!!
Thanks again guy, Happy new year 2008!!!

    Absolutely Great!

The ONLY fix found by this 25 year computer guy. Trust me I’m not a novice. I had installed so many power user video and audio codecs though the years I cant count them all.

If you are afflicted by the “No System Sound” issue, you know how annoying it can be.

Whoever wrote this product took a great deal of time and effort to find conflicting issues that only someone who works with this a great deal would know.

Please accept my heart felt thanks for this post.

If this doesn’t fix your problem just keep looking, that’s all you can do. But, I would bet a dollar to a doughnut that it’s not a driver problem if it doesn’t fix it.

    Best Regards
