Fix Windows No System Sound and Audio Problem
Windows system does not gives you sound and audio suddenly or despite sound card or audio device is present and working previously? Windows XP, 2000, NT, 2003 or even Vista computers may lost Windows audio and system sounds output due to the mess on file system or registry that created or left by third party utilities after installation and uninstallation, or corrupted and missing codecs, a component necessary to decompress and decode media files so that can be playback by Windows system.
When the Windows no sound problem occurs, the symptoms include users do not hear any Windows system sound even though the volume control on speakers have turned on, and all audio mixers and EQs is not muted. Users cannot hear sound from mouse start navigation clicks, Windows startup sound, messenger’s user online or incoming message notification alert and etc. Even Flash video clips hosted on YouTube, Google Video, Dailymotion, CNet Video, MetaCafe, and etc will not output the sound, even though video playback fine without problem.
If you have no sound problem only on Flash objects (video on Youtube, Flash games and etc), try out the Flash no sound registry fix, especially on wavemapper registry key. Else if you try to uninstall and install drivers again, restore to previous system restore point, changing sound card or switch it to another PCI slot will not solve the no sound problem.
Here is a simple trick to fix Windows system no sound problem. The trick works by using a tool built into K-Lite Codec Pack.
- Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack version 3.3.0 Full from here or here, or choose other versions from more mirrors here. You can deselect most components that you don’t need, except Codec Tweak Tool under the Tools section.
- After installed, click on Start button, then go to All Programs -> K-Lite Codec Pack -> Configuration -> Codec Tweak Tool.
- In the Codec Tweak Tool window, tick the check box next to [Registry] Fix non-working system sound.

- Click on Next button, and your Windows no sound problem should be fixed, and working as usual.

I had the same problem. Fortunately for me it happened right after I uninstalled “JAVA(TM) 6 update 7″. So I restored Vista back to the point before that uninstall. Now the Windows sounds are back and YouTube videos have sound again.

To any others like me who trawled online and tried every solution without success, I’ve come up with a fix. The wavemapper registry fix is soooooooo close!
1. In Vista, switch off UAC (this step may not be necessary but was on the machine i was fixing)
2. Get hold of anybody with a working Vista machine and ask them for their msacm32.drv file (in C:\Windows\System32 folder). U can gladly email me on zzadz@hotmail.com and i’ll send u mine.
3. Copy their file into ur C:\Windows\System32 folder-if like me you already have a msacm32.drv fle that you ASSUMED to be working ok, rename the new file msacm32.1.drv
4. Open regedit, go to LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CURRENT VERSION\DRIVERS 32 and open the WAVEMAPPER key.
5. Change the value to msacm32.1.drv
This works straight away – i guess the msacm32.drv file is corrupt and Windows has no way of telling you.
Please pass this solution on – i cant find it anywhere else on the net!

This fix worked a treat for me. I had been trying to fix this problem for nearly 3 months. The only thing I might mention is the new version of the software automatically fixes the busted codecs and there is no longer an option in the menu.
Cheers

The K-Lite Codec Tweak Tool is also available as a separate download.
http://www.codecguide.com/download_other.htm#codectweaktool
If the fix is invisible, then make sure you run the tool on an administrator user account.
If the fix is grayed out, then it means that this particular fix is not needed. Your problem has some other cause (bad driver?) and will require a different fix.

I need to give a HUGE thanks for this gem! I too have been searching high and low for the fix to this HP laptop (dv9000 – dv9310us for others searching). I downloaded the newest version 445f, de-selected everything but the Tweak Tool… and as part of the install it auto-magically detected registry problems and asked if I’d like to fix them… AND IT DID! Now I get system sounds, YouTube, etc. Like others, DVD player made audio, iTunes made audio, but not the basics. I was *this* close to a complete OS re-image. THANKS AGAIN!
