indeed... just wondering whether some of you were able to use Vista's backup utility to backup on the myBook or whether I'm wasting my time trying to...

There is definitely a problem with Vista, and it has to do with authentication of private shares (that require a username and password) and a conflict between Vista and the version of SAMBA (or whatever) that the Linux-based My Book World is using. I'm looking for a solution myself, but wanted to add my two cents; if you have shares that require an explicit login, your connection may work only sporadically, because the SMB session does not stay alive and Vista is not communicating your credentials "seamlessly" when the session needs to be recreated.

Dear IT Guy
Sorry, but you are talking nonsense. Mybook just doesn't work under vista. It's not only the software the doesn't install. Also the acces to mybook through webacces and shares doesn't work. You can acces shares with public-acces. Bur shares with user-acces, just forget it. And yes, every thing does work under XP. So where is the problem?? It is WD!!!

Both Western Digital and Mionet have directions on how to resolve this problem. On the cd that comes with this product is an instruction manual that tells you how to access and configure the drive without installing the WD Anywhere Access software. The following link explains how to access the drive via a web interface if you are using the Mionet software: http://www.wdmybook.com/en/compare/vista.asp

All it takes is a little attention to detail and a small effort to find solutions to most problems. In the time it takes for most people to complain about something, they could have fixed it themselves.

MyBook World Edition II works just on Vissta Home Premium - as long as you don't want to change it, or make shares, or anything else you are supposed to be able to do. I am running mine as a NAS and everybody in the house can see it. I don't want to share the thing on the web, but I sure expected to be able to use the configuration management software. Since I can't get past the install, I have no idea where that is. SP SP2 compatabbility? Forget it. The install starts, but does not complete.

As of 8/22/07 those of us using Vista are on day 4 of having NO access to our drives since access can only be had through the MioNet website.

Can't believe I trusted Western Digital again...
