Repair and Reset Windows Vista TCP/IP Winsock Catalog Corruption

TCP/IP stack Winsock settings in Windows Vista may get corrupted, causing errors and problems with Internet connectivity. Corrupt Winsock or Windows sockets configuration can be due to a lot of reasons such as installation of a networking software, or due to virus, trojan or malware infection, or sometime even due to disinfection of spyware by security software.

When Winsock corrupts, the networking errors that you may face include unable to surf the Internet with “Page cannot be displayed” error message in Internet Explorer or AOL even though the DSL/ADSL/cable Internet connection is connected. Sometimes, Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is terminated as well.

To repair and reset the Windows Vista

  1. Click on Start button.
  2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
  3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow elevation request.
  4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt shell, and then press the Enter key.
  5. Restart the computer.

What netsh winsock reset command does are it resets Winsock Catalog to a clean state or default configuration. It removes all Winsock LSP (Layered Service Providers) previously installed, including the potential malfunctioned LSP that causes loss of network packets transmission failure. So all previously-installed LSPs must be reinstalled. This command does not affect Winsock Name Space Provider entries.

Note: To check which LSPs installed on your Vista system, use netsh winsock show catalog command.

It’s also possible to reset TCP/IP Internet Protocol stack.

tried to install/connect my laptop with comcast high speed internet service via the lan connection. cannot find my ethernet card, and it returned with these error messages.
“Lan Area Network” does not have a valid IP configurations” although my ethernet cable is connected directly from the cable modem one end and the other to the laptop’s ethernet port. thanks

My VISTA Ultimate computer would not start numerous services. I tried to start the Event Viewer in particular and received the error Event Log stopped working – Error 1747 : The Authentication Service is Unknown
Doing a search on this error brought up a trail of things that MS suggested that didn’t work. Someone posted this fix – and it worked!
    Thanks!

If that didn’t work, try to uninstall the network card leaving the drivers in system, this will reset all the network settings, after that scan for new hardware, system will found network card , then just to configure the ip etc

Yeah! That did it for me. My son’s computer was running dead-dog slow and had a broken network connection and no readable Event Log. I disabled a bunch of junk in msconfig and ran this command with elevated privileges and all is well.

[...] ARP (Address Resolution Protocol is the standard method for finding a host’s hardware address when only its network layer address is known. In other word, in IPv4 and Ethernet network environment, Windows operating system uses ARP to translate IP addresses to Ethernet MAC addresses. However, Microsoft Windows ARP cache will occasionally become corrupt and need to be cleared and deleted so that the cache can be refreshed. When you haven’t problem connecting to Internet where connections to websites or web pages will time out or fail, and unable to surf or browse the Internet pages, the error may because also of ARP cache corruption, other than TCP/IP corruption or Winsock error. I’ve had the same problem with XP Pro. And in this particular case, this fix didn’t work.
To solve the problem, I’ve used WinSockFix which did the work well.
