Trick to Use Logitech QuickCam Messenger in Windows Vista
Officially, older batch and most of the Logitech QuickCam Messenger is not supported and not compatible with Windows Vista, although you may misleading believe otherwise as QuickCam 10.5 software supports Vista is provided for free download. However, in most of the case, except Logitech QuickCam Messenger with P/N no. of 861225 and USB/PID of 08DA will fail in installation during the webcam setup, where Vista unable to detect the webcam even though you have inserted the webcam.
On the other hand, using Windows Vista Add Hardware Wizard will not detect any driver for the webcam, even though you have extracted the driver files from the executables, no matter the Wizard search automatically online and locally or been asked to browse and locate the software drivers on the unpacked location.
In addition, Problem Reports and Solutions applet may appear after the failed driver installation for Logitech QuickCam Messenger with the following message:
Windows Vista does not support Logitech QuickCam Messenger
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between Windows Vista and Logitech QuickCam Messenger.
Logitech QuickCam Messenger was created by Logitech, Inc..
Recommendation
—————-
To search for similar devices that are compatible with this version of Windows, visit the Windows Vista Hardware Compatibility List website online.
However, it’s not totally out of hope for owner of Logitech QuickCam Messenger who has upgraded to Windows Vista. The following hack will use Windows XP driver (a common trick to use non Vista compliant device) to install the webcam in Vista:
- Download QuickCam 8.4.8 with driver for WinXP.
- Install WinRAR if not already installed yet.
- Open the setup installer qc848enu.exe and unpack its contents to a folder. Alternatively, right click on qc848enu.exe and select “Extract to qc848enu\” option.
- Insert or plug in the Logitech QuickCam Messenger to a USB port if not already done so.
- An “Driver Software Installation” icon in systray (notification area) should appear, which will pop up detailed message if click. It should fail, and “Add Hardware Wizard” dialog window will appear. Choose to install the driver manually by instructing the Wizard to locate and look for the web cam driver inside the Drivers folder under the unpacked folder of the qc848enu.exe setup program. You can use browser button to select the folder.
- Windows Vista should grab the XP driver and install it properly.
- Download the latest version (10.5.1) of Vista compliant QuickCam software from Logitech to install the software on Vista.
- Run the setup (qc1051enu) normally. You may need to skip the detection of webcam near the end of installation process.
Update: Fix for Logitech Quickcam in Windows Vista SP1.
Voila, you can now use the Logitech webcam to capture images or use it in conjunction with video chat in IM programs such as Windows Live (MSN) Messenger, AIM Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype or run Logitech VideoCall.
This hack may work on other Logitech QuickCams that doesn’t yet or will never support Windows Vista too, such as Logitech QuickCam Zoom Silver, QuickCam Notebooks Deluxe, QuickCam Express, QuickCam Chat, Quickcam Orbit/Sphere, Quickcam Pro 4000, QuickCam Orbit MP, QuickCam Chat and etc. However it’s not tested. If you willing to try out and feedback is appreciated.

For you get success with your logiteh quickcam mesenger on windows 7 build 7600, you just should download the driver for The Quickcam Chat for skype, http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/435/263&hub=1&cl=br,pt?osid=14
That’s it, will works fine, I had problems before with mine cam, And resolved as related.

@Tess : Install 7-zip instead of Winrar. http://www.7-zip.org/ It works great and it’s free.
Thank you very very much for this post. I can now run my QuickCam Messenger on Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 (I don’t really need the microphone because I’m using a separate desktop micro, so I’m skipping the second fix).
Merci infiniment, grazie mille !

I ran through all of the steps, but I cannot get the 8.4.8 or 10.5.1 versions of the driver software to install manually. I go to device manager, say update device driver, choose the folder from my computer, and immediately it says “Windows was unable to install your camera. Windows could not find the driver software for your device.” Any help is appreciated. I have a quickcam messanger.

February 17th, 2009 14:02
Hi,
I believe Microsoft has added the 2005 drivers to their update functionality (QuickCam Express – Vista SP1). All I had to do was plug in the PC Camera, let the automatic detection finish, and restart the computer!
Did not require any software to be downloaded or installed from my end.

Here is the download site from Logitech for the old driver :

December 19th, 2008 07:04
Hey Guys ! … I got the QuickCam Pro 4000 installed in Vista 64 SP1 ! After 10 mn working on it.
Here is how :
I first got a freeware called Universal Extractor at http://www.legroom.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=Open_Source&file=index&page=software&app=uniextract
Then I used it to unpack the latest Logitech driver for XP x64 namely the qc1150_x64.exe …
Well the extraction failed but this tool told me it was packed with 7-Zip. Again a freeware.
Then I unpacked it succesfully with 7-Zip. However Vista x64 would not recognize a driver for the QuickCam Pro when directed o install the driver a the specific place of the unpacking using windows device driver …
Then I unpacked [with 7-Zip] the oldest version of the Logitech driver for XP x64 it is the file qc1051enu_x64.exe (you can google to find it on the internet).
And directed Vista x64 Device Manager to install the driver from the folder Drivers\x64\PRO64 [other folders refers to others webcams like IM64 for Internet Messenger] and it worked ! … [I tried other more recent versions of logitech drivers and it didn't work].
Then I succesfully instally the latest x64 driver which is qc1150_x64.exe as mentioned above !!! And it’s working smoothly well just as in regular 32 bit (x86) installation. no banding nor other quirks.
This basically the same trick used for Windows 32 bit except that the new drivers from Logitech don’t unpack with WinRAR ! but with 7-Zip …
I hope it will help other install this Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000 webcam in Vista x64 !
Cheers !!!

well i am trying this fix too, i get to the point of where i am trying to install the xp driver. except that vista will not find it when i point it right to the files i extracted from qc848enu.exe. I need to know which exact file is the windows XP driver so i can target if from the device manager since vista doesn’t feel like playing nice. I have also read of people getting the camera to work without the mic on the camera working for vista64bit, thats all im looking for so i am kind of squeemish about replacing or downgrading any files actually a part of my OS.
September 24th, 2008 13:12
i had to reboot after installing the software and then point to the new directory but after that it worked great. thanks!

I went to C:\program files\logitech and i deleated everything. i went to my control pannel and deleated everything with logitech. and it still tells me that i have the new version installed. I dont know what to do. Any help is much appreciated.
June 21st, 2008 22:48
I extract the content of qc848 to a folder. Plug in the camera, and then point to that folder. Vista x64 doesn’t find a driver in there. Any ideas?
June 15th, 2008 07:52
help…im up to step 3 and i right clicked on qc848enu.exe and it doesnt say extract anywhere..
May 27th, 2008 06:44
Just install the new driver from logitech support site. THey’ll ask you how to fix different error codes. That’d Fix Quickcam Communicator STX problem.
May 17th, 2008 05:53
I get similar problem on Windows XP Pro 32-bit. I need to install Logitech Pro 9000, and no driver work (from disk or from site, or 848 mentioned in this post too). Diferent is only view in the devcie manager — 1, 2 or 3 devices with yellow question mark.
Windows is SP2 with all updates, so I suuppose also some system driver has incorrect version (too new?) and cam drivers fail.
Error report is that “firmware inproperly reports device resources, and driver can’t start”.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
May 12th, 2008 08:04
It doesn’t work with Vista 64 bit. Vista doesn’t pick up the drivers when pointing to the folder with the extracted files from qc848enu, no matter if you point it directly to the folder with the files.

April 4th, 2008 09:59
Thanks Luis for the solution. I was hoping there would be an easier way, but I decided I wanted my webcam working again, and now it is. I thought I’d post a more detailed step by step though, as it is a bit nasty for non-techies…
Nick: Just follow the original instructions that worked for pre-SP1. Then you have to leave the Vista operating system so you can replace that USBAUDIO.sys file. One way of doing this as Luis did is to use a live Linux CD.
A live CD is basically an operating system that doesn’t need to be installed – it runs off the CD and your computer RAM. I used Ubuntu live CD:
Download here:
http://www.ubuntu.com/GetUbuntu/download
You will then need to “mount the image” burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD:
Installation info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation
Once you’ve got your live CD, you then restart your computer, make sure you boot using the CD (you’ll need to press F12 or whichever key combination your computer indicates when you’re booting up).
Then once you’re in Linux, just search for Computer and find “OS” – that will be your Windows Vista operating system. Look for the folders Luis mentioned:
Copy USBAUDIO.sys from this location:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wdma_usb.inf_9ce240de
And paste it over the USBAUDIO.sys in this location:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers
Now shut down linux, and reboot into Windows. You may need to restart Windows once more (I did), but now you should have your audio working once again!
Hope this helps. Let me know if not – I’ll check this page a for a few days. Contact me through my website if you need to: http://www.realfreewebsites.com
April 4th, 2008 09:33
Mine didn`t work, maybe because i`m using windows vista 64bit?
April 1st, 2008 23:01
great job!!! it works!!! thank you so much
March 31st, 2008 20:51
Yoo
Luis, can you give us your usbaudio.sys (with rapidshare or megauplaod, or any others).
Cause i’ve put SP1, and after, i’ve clean up all previous data before the SP1…:S
(and i don’t want to install vista again just for this file ^^ )
So if you can put it online, i would love it
Thanks
March 26th, 2008 06:11
Luis can you post the solution in simpler step by step process. I have installed SP1. I am now stuck at the first step. I extract the qc848enu.exe file
but after the “driver installation failed” I don’t get the “add hardware wizard”. Then I go to device manager and I scroll down to camera with the yellow exclamation mark on it and i right click and update driver. Then I browse to locate the driver. And thats as far as I get. So, please post step by step process. Thanks
March 26th, 2008 00:18
Luis!
Thank you, it works now. I’ve used Hiren’s Boot cd and Volkov Commander with ntsfdos. After reboot, the yellow exclamation mark has disappeared. I hope there is no more drama with my vista.
March 25th, 2008 09:07
Well, I fixed Vista Service Pack 1 problem, it took me a couple of hours but now I have confirmed workaround works properly.
First of all, I found the origin of the problem on the updated USB Audio Driver by SP1, looking for fixes related to USB audio on SP1, I found the following one http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933262
Then, once I suspected the origin of the problem was the file USBAUDIO.sys, I used searh function on windows to look for every file named like that on the system (notice you have to enable on folder properties to show system and hidden files).
It is obvious C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers is the path where system loads this driver, but search function showed too
C:\WINDOWS\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wdma_usb.inf_9ce240de path for this file, which was a backup of the original one, which was working before SP1.
Problem is solved swapping this two files, but since SP1 located on system32/drivers folder is being used by the system, it can’t be deleted nor moved while system is running, so I got it booting from a Linux live CD which mounts Vista NTFS partition in write mode.
From Linux OS I was able to overwrite USBAUDIO.sys file which previous one and once Vista is loaded again, MIC from QuickCam Messenger is working fine again.
Hope it helps.
March 25th, 2008 07:07
Since I installed Vista Service Pack 1, QuickCam Meseenger MIC does not work either.
I have tried a lot of reinstalls and hacks without any success, please, in case someone fix it, share the solution.
March 24th, 2008 03:44
Hmm, yep, looks like Vista SP1 kills this hack. Be warned. Please post here, if you find a solution!
March 20th, 2008 23:01
Hi!
This post has help me too, but yesterday I’ve installed the Vista SP1. After the reboot my QC Messenger mic has an error message: The device can not be started. I have downloaded all the drivers found on logitech’s ftp server, but no one make me a deal. If anyone can help me, please don’t foregt me. Thx.
March 18th, 2008 13:52
Thanks so much! been so anoyed with logitech and this is just the simplest solution. Why logitech can’t make thier own stuff work beats me.
anyway ..thanks!!
March 3rd, 2008 07:45
Thank you Thomas! Now it worked. I didn’t know you had to search for the exe-file itself. Thank you! you saved me!
March 2nd, 2008 17:40
Stephan and Rave, this does work, but make sure you follow these steps in this order:
- install WinRAR
- open WinRAR
- Select File > Open archive
- Browse to your qc848enu.exe file
- Click on open.
Voila! In other words, don’t try to open the exe file directly, you need to go through WinRAR first. Hope this helps.
March 2nd, 2008 06:32
Thank you, Rave, same problem in my case! What can we do???
February 25th, 2008 19:08
You cant extract an exe file to a folder using Winrar. The qc848enu.exe is a self extracting SETUP file that installs the web cam itself, still resulting in a non working webcam under these instructions. How the hell other ppl did this under vista is beyond me.
February 24th, 2008 23:54
Worked like a charm! Thanks!
February 23rd, 2008 04:19

February 14th, 2008 06:43
I did not work.
Vista won’t recognize the folder I created. I don’t know why that is. Do you have an answer?
Thanx!
January 26th, 2008 08:44
It works.. thanks!!
January 25th, 2008 08:24

January 19th, 2008 07:37
amazing work dude .. how did u managed to do that???u r simply superb.. i tried for 2 days and was just losing hope then i saw ur post.. it worked .. great…hats off
December 31st, 2007 08:27
This worked liked a charm for my son’s older level Webcam Chat, and with QC 11.5.
As an aside I will not buy another Logitech product including mice, remotes, or speakers, because of thier abysmal support policy reagrding their cameras. It’s apparent that this is a policy decision and not a technical one and it is a poor one at that. As an industry analyst I am pretty familiar with many different comapnies and thier support (or lack thereof) and this is pretty close to the tops in customer abuse.
Boo logitech! Shame on you!

Great tips.
PaperWings: I also use the older Logitech QuickCam Messenger (V-UAS14) with Windows Vista Business 32bit and the 8.4.8 driver was successfully recognized.
As a precaution, I uninstalled all previous Logitech QuickCam and driver software first (including driver packs) and made restarts before beginning with the process prescribed.

Thanks sooo much! Im a computer retard and tho this took me a few hours to figure out I eventually got it! Also thx to Jeff for ur helpful ideas too!
August 13th, 2007 23:45
hey guys. for Vista 64Bit try this!:
Go into Bios when starting your computer, set USB controller to 1.0(or whatever it is, not 2.0 atleast)
save and boot into windows
run qc1110_x64.exe from logitech download
(or you can try other installers, this was the one i used)
once its finished extracting let it stay open and go to c:/users/*your user name*/Local/temp and check for logitech 11.10 folder or similar.
copy that folder anywhere you like it contains the drivers and the installation programs deletes it from temp folder once its canceled/installed.
you can continue to isntall it if you wish to have the software after you copied the folder.
now plugin your camera, let it try find drivers(it wont find any)
choose to search for drivers, browse to your folder you copied from the temp folder, in there are the drivers
if that doesnt work you might have to open unit/hardware explorer(properties on this computer then up in the corner)
you will see unknown device, Camera or similar
right click it and choose update drivers
choose show all installed drivers
choose browse (you will see it choosing A:/ or floppy)
browse to your folder you copied from temp
open the x64 folder or where the drivers are located
choose your camera (mine was Logitech USB instant messenger or something)
camera should install fine =D
sorry for not being able to give even more detailed instructions but 1. my english sucks and 2. it should be easy to figgure it out
Enjoy the crappy Logitech support.. :p
August 10th, 2007 08:32
when plug quickcam express into vista it installs it automatically but in device manager it says its installed but unknown device what can i do??? if i try to update drivers it says windows has already got the latest drivers even tho theres non installed for it.

Fantastic – this works a treat. This should be posted on the Logitech forums, as far as they are concerned its buy a new camera.
It won’t work with Vista 64-Bit, I did try this and it failed to find the driver.

Oh, wait, it’s because it’s 64bit Vista. CRAP.

Doesn’t work for me, with Quickcam Express. Windows doesn’t recognize the 8.4.8 driver at all, regardless.
Goddamn Vista.

Great trick! I had a problem installing the driver initially because there was no option to manually select the driver. I had to user the following instructions:
If the driver is on a CD/DVD or you downloaded it to your computer, select Ask Me Later. Click Start, right-click Computer, and then select Properties from the drop-down menu. In the System window, select Device Manager from the Tasks pane. Provide your administrator password, if needed, and then click Continue. The USB device should be listed in the Device Manager window, probably in the Other Devices category, with a yellow exclamation point next to it. It may display the name UNKNOWN DEVICE or its actual name. Double-click the device and select the Driver tab. Click Update Driver. In the Update Driver Software window, select the text labeled Browse My Computer For Driver Software. Click Browse and then locate the folder on your computer or the CD/DVD in which the driver is stored. Click OK. Click Next and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Finally someone who has fgound a way around Logitech’s poor support and advice. Well done. Worked for me on QuickCam IM with both the old version of the EXE and the new version. The person who claimed this is athe “manual” way must not have tried the Logitech Install which fails to properly unpack the driver in a state that Vista can detect – an unpack did the trick for me.

No offence guys… but this is what every driver installer does, extracts the driver files and points the add new hardware wizard to the location. But this is simply the manual way.
PS this works with most drivers for any hardware.
