Hello
Does this hack work for a french version of Vista?

Hello
I’ve followed the instructions. The operation is “success”.
But when I restart the computer, Vista doesn’t boot. The screen stays black.
Some idea?

I had access denied errors for bootmgr and the attrib command did not work
However,
use the “takeown” command, followed by cacls.
Using x64, this gave me access to bootmgr. I tried a ridiculous amount of techniques before finding this, even going into safe mode (which did not work)

Just run DBAN CD and re-install Vista afterwards from your Vista disk after backing up your Ubuntu, Redhat and other GNU-based wonderful partitions you have residing on your hdd. You will have your Vista right back to factory install. The annoying thing is: Now you have to go and add GRUB to the master boot record again so you can boot all of those other real bug free operating systems again what a damn mission. Vista is like the rainforest it looks so nice but it’s full of deadly bugs and nasty surprises.

I tried this on my Dell Optiplex GX620 with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate x64 dual-booted.
As happywithcrack pointed out, I had to go through “takeown” and “cacls” to let vistaboot modify bootmgr.
Although vistaboot did successfully modified bootmgr, the Dell machine couldn’t load Vista.
It looks like that the bootmgr was not proparly recognized and then XP’s ntldr ran instead.
One possibility is that at the end of the modication of bootmgr by “takeown” and “cacls”, I was not able to change ALC of Administrators from “F” to “R”, while all the other entities were correctly modified back to their original status of access authority.
Anyways, I suspect that the Dell Optiplex GX620 does not have SLIC2.0 table within the BIOS. (Maybe because it’s pre-VISTA era PC?)
I suspect so because I as first tried installing VISTA ultimate x64 by using genuine Dell OEM DVD.
Or simply Dell’s pre-vista era PCs are not possible to alter BIOS, let emulate OEM table or allow any workaround??
The last thing I can is simply buying Retail VISTA….

Just a follow-up,
By saying in the 3rd paragraph in the last post:
“Although vistaboot did successfully modified bootmgr, the Dell machine couldn’t load Vista.
It looks like that the bootmgr was not proparly recognized and then XP’s ntldr ran instead.”
I mean that XP booted without going through the selection window, as you always see “Earlier version of Windows” or “Windows Vista” at running.
Hopefully it makes myself understood

It worked!
Before following the steps in the installation tutorial above, first, install Vista with the appropriate OEM key. If already installed, just change the key. You’ll get error but just ignore.
Get into elevated command - right click cmd and run as administrator.
Type “CD \”. Then, type “takeown /a bootmgr”. Then type “cacls bootmgr /p BUILTIN\Administrators:F /e”. Leave the cmd window open.
Then follow the instructions above up to number 8. Don’t follow the “attrib” part - not needed. Then, do the following from the elevated cmd, type “cacls bootmgr /p BUILTIN\Administrators:R /e” to restore back.
Make sure you have no CD inside the cdrom and type “shutdown -r -t 0″ to reboot now.
Should be ok now. I got it to work as Home Premium as well as Ultimate for the HP version.

Where can I get the SLIC for am Abit mother board?
March 28th, 2008 06:04
will this method outstand sp1 as well, or do i have to flash a moded bios?
March 31st, 2008 04:43
Follow up to my comment.
Nah… don’t bother with this method. It worked, sure. Then, I tried by running autoupdate and the next day, it’s deactivated and it seems MS has patched the boot manager to a new size. So, this method does not work anymore.
I’m now back to the grub method… hate the text but hey, it’s the most reliable. Frankly, I hate Vista but had no choice bcoz there’s no bug-less drivers fro this HP lap… So, had to crack vista just to run vmware and opensuse on it.. haha.
