Hack to Activate Microsoft Office 2007 Evaluation Trial Version
Most suites or programs of Microsoft Office 2007 allows user to evaluate the product. The trial version of 2007 Microsoft Office system can be installed by using a 25-character trial product key available from Microsoft while you download the free Office software, and you can use the Microsoft Office 2007 suite or program with full functionality for 60 days.
You may have the Office 2007 CD and are able to install Office 2007 without entering product key. However, Office 2007 will work in reduced functionality mode, where it’s effectively just a viewer for Office documents. Beside, if you forget the trial product key, or don’t wish to register a Windows Live ID to get the trial key, here’s the trick to activate Office 2007, or more correctly, bypass the activation of Office 2007 60 days trial, and making the “trial” word disappear from the Office title at the top and suppress activation and trial expiry prompt.
Note that to use Microsoft Office 2007 beyond 60 days trial period, you need to purchase a valid license for it, available from Amazon
To use this hack to crack activation on Office 2007, you need to install Office 2007 without any serial number or product key. If you have installed Office 2007 with a product key or serial number, do the following to clean remove Office 2007 of product key:
- Close all Microsoft Office applications.
- Run Register Editor by clicking on Start -> Run, and then type “regedit” in the Open box and press Enter key.
- Navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration
Note that inside the registry key, there should be another subkey that resembles the following:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{91120000-0011-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE
- If there is more than one registry entries or subkeys that reference Microsoft 12.0 registration, open up each subkey, and then identify the product by the ProductName value data until you locate the subkey for the product which you want to remove the existing product license key.
For example:
ProductName=Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007
ProductName=Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - Once found the correct registry subkey, delete the following values:
DigitalProductID
ProductID - Close Registry Editor.
Once Microsoft Office 2007 has been installed with no product key, proceed with the following steps:
- In Windows Explorer, brose to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
- Right click on Proof.XML file, select “Open With…” in the right click menu.
- In the “Open With” window, select Notepad to be used to open the XML file. In Vista, if you can’t see the Notepad option, simply double click the “Other Programs” to unhide it.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the Proof.XML to locate the following lines:
</Feature> <Feature Id=”SetupXmlFiles” Cost=”1248″>
<OptionRef Id=”AlwaysInstalled”/>
</Feature> - Change the AlwaysInsalled to neverInstalled so that the line looks like following:
<OptionRef Id=”neverInstalled”/>
- Save the Proof.xml file. In Windows Vista, you may need to take ownership and grant full access permission to yourself before able to modify the file.
- You can now launch Microsoft Office 2007 application such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook and etc without prompting for activation.
As usual, as it’s a hack, and before you purchase a valid product key for it, you won’t be able to AND can’t access any updates or Microsoft Office Online.

This does work. This hack makes no promises of stopping the trial version from expiring – it simply gives you full use of Microsoft Office that is otherwise limited due to it’s trial status.

I performed these steps about a month ago, and it worked perfectly and then one day, it jsut stopped working. Office went back to reduced functionality mode and I don’t know why. I uninstalled office and then tried the steps again, and its not working, any help?

I was in the middle of a company project when the trial expired. Since this was a Beta test on my own time before the company would look at it, I would have had to shell out needed money to continue.

so this worked for me, until i guess it was the 25th time i wanted to use excel. its in reader mode and the xml file is neverInstalled and the product key is deleted and everything. but now i can’t uninstall it.

OK this is the second crack (that actually works!) Install Office 2007 with a product key (not a trial product key!)and use this crack!
1. Install Office 2007
2. Enter the Serial (Don’t work without one)
3. Extract this stuff to:
C:Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12
Replace file when prompted
Open any Office 2007 Application. Like Word.
Click Activate by Phone. Pick your Country.
Fill all of the empty boxes with zeros so it looks
like this: 000000-000000-000000-000000-000000-000000
. Click Activate. and it will tell you it’s activated!

I know it’s a lot of work but it worked 4 me. Maybe it will work 4 others…
FYI :I use Vista Basic, and made many modifications to the services.msc file disabling many microsoft programs.

Hey didn’t realize that this wouldn’t work if I had already put in a product code. So I tried to change to “neverinstall” but it didn’t work (of couse) but the problem is now I cannot remove the software because it says a file is corrupt. Any suggestions? I want to delete it so I can try another method.

in answer to the question vista users might have about allowing themselves full control, you just right click on ‘proof’ (the file itself) and choose properties>security>edit, choose the appropriate user and click ‘full control.’ hope that helps! it should allow you to save normally after that.

If you already installed MSO 07 with a good key but cannot ACTIVATE it try this.
Download mso.dll_patched_activation_and_templates_SP2_(12.0.6425.1000). Extract the file to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12

At work they use cracked versions of Office 2007. I checked and all of them say “Always Installed”.
Considering they’ve been using the cracked versions for a good year or year and a half, it obviously makes no diff that the thing says “Always Installed”.

Hi. I have followed the steps but when I change the “AlwaysInstalled” to “neverInstalled” it will not allow me to save. I get a popup box that says:

Okay so I’ve basically been getting the same problems as everyone here. I installed Onenote 2007 and it worked for about a month and now it’s grayed out and I cannot modify my document. I’m currently trying to use it on XP. However, I did the same thing a couple months back on my vista laptop and it still works perfectly fine…

If you get an error trying to save, follow this:
1. Open proof.xml
2. Edit correctly
3. Save to Desktop as proof.xml
4. In Office /dir/ rename proof.xml to proof.old
5. Copy desktop version to office /dir/

this patche no longer works … I have Office 2007 Trial SP2 installed and it no longer works. Before I had to reload my computer – my previous install of Office 2007 Trial was successfully running with the patch.

This does work. However, if you ever want run the installer for office 2007 for any reason, you must change the “neverinstalled” back to “AlwaysInstalled”. If you don’t you will get an error telling you that to run the installer from the original media.

Microsoft has patched Office 2007 so that this option doesn’t work anymore. No widely known solution is available except to buy a real copy of it. Depending on what you need in the suite it isn’t that costly sometimes… especially if you are a student.

Hi,
I recently followed the step by step instructions, which were very easy to follow and it did unlock office 2007 for me. But a week later my office is now locked and I am unable to do anything…
Is there any way to fix this problem. I dont want to restart my office as Ive got alot of vital info on here…. Please get bk at me asap

Yeah… looks like this hack breaks after a period of time or perhaps someone accidentally ran a Windows update that killed it. At any rate it looks like this install is dead… or at least I don’t have a new idea to continue. :/ Tried setting back to original (restoring the reg entries, restoring the file to AlwaysInstalled) opening up Word and then closing and re-following steps. No joy.

I have tried it also and it IS NOT Working because my trial has expired.
seems the hack only block the GUI to not ask u for Product ID but in background it knows your trial has expired.

In order to write the new “proof.xml” into the folder, I just saved the NEW proof.xml on my desktop, moved the OLD one into My Documents (just for safe keeping) the moved the NEW Proof.xml into the folder where the old one was. It wouldn’t let me save the NEW one there from notepad either.

It can only work for a while. The only thing is that window which let you enter the product key doesn’t appear. Then after office expired, you cannot use it at all.

I tried this but I am getting an error when trying to save the Proof.en file: Cannot create the C:\Progam files\common files\microsoft shared\OFFICE12\office setup conroller\proof.en\proof.xml file. @ rivebise – thanks, I had trouble locating the file as Im using Vista as well, now my turn to help you.
To save the file (cos I then had the same problem as you) you need to right click on the Proof.en file, go into properties, and click on the security tab. Have a look at your user name in the list (there’s administrator etc) and see if you have modify rights. Most likely not, so just click on the edit button, give yourself rights to modify. I didn’t even bother closing down the proof.en file while I made the changes, just went back and saved it and voila!

if you have vista, delete the proo.xml selection.
then go open your recyle bin and drag the file onto you desktop. edit it on the and save it. Then drag the file back into the proo.en folder. works like a charm

If you are using vista and you can’t save the file take the following steps; it worked for me.
Go to Control Panel -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control off -> Restart, then try it. It will let you save.

to give permission to save the changes in note page, right click on the file while in its folder, click properties. go to the security tab, click advanced, you should see 3 options- 2 have full access, one does not, click on it- click off the check box for full access. voila

I did this using Vista and it works but only for about ten seconds. For some reason it loads and lets you type, then immediately turns back to grey and the trial version…any help? I’m sure I followed the instructions correctly!

I’m using vista and i can’t seem to locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration i get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\ and the only options i have are MsoExample and User settings. Registration is not an option.

im on vista and it wasnt letting me save, so instead save it into your documents and delete the original proof.xml then paste the new one into the folder…this should work

i have vista and at first it kept saying it couldn’t save Proof in XML format, it could only save as a .txt file.
so i had to open Notepad first, right clicking it to open. I selected use ‘run as administrator’ to be able to edit in notepad (second part).
when i opened notepad as an administrator, then clicked OPEN from the File menu,
selected ‘all files’,
and then copied and pasted the proof file address (from part 2 step 1) in the search box.
I followed the directions changing AlwaysInstalled to neverInstalled.
Then I saved it.
after that i worked.
Hope it helps a Vista user.

Actually, neverInstalled produces an error, YOU HAVE TO DO FullInstalled and change the MS_OFFICE_TRIAL value to MS_OFFICE_FULL. Then it will work.

Totally worked – thanks! I had the trial already installed but had passed the 60 days. I followed the instructions to remove the activation codes, then do the hack & had no problems. I dont know what these other people are on about re it not working – they must not have followed the instructions properly! If it locked your office trial why wouldn’t you just uninstall-reinstall and try again? Uninstalling a trial doesn’t wipe your saved files…

You guys do know that after the 60 days if you delete the 2 things in the registry. Once Office locks up all you have to do is download a new copy of the trial over top of the one you currently have, and use a new trial key for an additional 60 days of use.

Kristie $827, did you find out how to fix the problem without uninstalling? I can read my emails but can’t respond or use most of the features. Quite annoying. I just saw Frank’s suggestion in 67. Not sure how I missed it. Apparently, once you have the gray features that’s it. So you do have to uninstall and try the suggestions he gave once you reinstall office. Give it a shot! Let me know if it works.
Unfortunately, I gave my office (ultimate) Cd away and never activated; I didn’t expect to have a problem since it was an original. Does anyone know if I can download a trial version for ultimate or should I have my nephew ship it back to me? Oh yeah! Since I can’t save anything in outlook, does that mean I lose all emails since my screen went gray? Sucks to be nice sometimes! Help

okay. i did all that and everything worked perfectly for a few months or so, and now i’m back to an ended trial?
i’ve checked the proof.en file and it is still saved as “neverInstalled”, and so i changed it back to Always, and it said my trial ran out – and changed it back to “never” and it doesn’t give me the popup, but still acts as if my trial ran out.
now it appears the only way to fix this, is to remove that version, and download a new trial pack (student, home etc) for a new trial – and attempt this hack again? possibly to only get 60 days/25 uses all over again?
i have no idea why this happened, (or when for that matter, since i don’t use office regularly).
help please?

I was able to deactivate the activation screen by following the directions; however when I open Word or Outlook the functionality grays out after 1 minute. I have updates turned off; something is allowing Outlook to reverse privilege after 30 sec to a minute. What could it be and how do I fix it without uninstalling and removing everything. Help…

It worked but the file was in a different place. My computer came with M office installed but no product key and said it would stop working after a certain number of times opening the product.
I searched in my computer for Proof.XML and it found the file for me and changed the line as stated and now it opens without warning.

I tested this out and it works, though, when I got my laptop office 2007 was already on my comp but i guess it was just the trial version, the user before me never installed office and thus never entered in the trial product key. i saw on here somewhere that if you do what you posted before the trial version then microsoft will pick it up and you won’t be able to get it back. would this also apply in my case?

I’ve read all the comments about this item. All i’m going to do is wait for the 60 day trial period and then do this “hack / tweak” or whatever they call it. For the meantime, i’ll still look for serials and keygens that will work. Saves me all the trouble of going through this unsure process of obtaining Microsoft Office ‘07. I suggest to find keygens and serials in torrents/file sharing sites like “Thepiratebay.com or mininova.org”.
Also try astalavista.com for serial search…
I think this is the safest way so far and only do this “hack/tweak” if only in desperation… Just a thought….

ich habe die Dateien wie im Tutorial angeführt gelöscht und die restlichen Schritte ebenso vollzogen. Jedoch kann das Programm immernoch einige Funktionen nicht ausführen. The Office Trial that was preinstalled on my PC ran out so it effectively turned it into a reader because I could not make any changes to the documents. After using this workaround I can now make alterations etc again so in my case it worked a treat. OK I now have to turn off auto updates etc but that’s no great inconvenience.

This does not work to get MS Office for free. It just disables the notification. After 25 starts or 60 days most functions are disabled. When you want uninstall it you cant because of the deleted subkeys in the registry file. Manual uninstall is your next step and its a lot of steps. Best to go to Ebay and find one cheaply.

I did every single step, but once I got to the step where i open up proof.en in Notepad, i change is to ‘neverInstalled’ but once i save it, it tells me that

No this actually works, and yes MS does have a correction for it in automatic updates. Key is, just stop installing automatic updates. I had to system restore and stop installing them.
All MS does for auto updates is scan your web history and provide it to its MSN web search team. No real need for them unless you have Vista, where MS constantly must fix OS flaws

It took Microsoft a day to find me out and disable most functions of all my Office 2007 programs. I suspect they inspect your computer everytime they claim to “install updates”. This is a really stupid, amateurish set of instructions. Don’t even try.

but it does ask you if for a product key, even thoe it is not required.

it will only let you run it up to 25 times before you can no longer use it w/o a product key.

I need help. I used this about 3 months ago and it worked perfectly. Now with no warning it has all just completely gone again and the problem is that all my files ARE saved how they should be on here.

I have a huge problem with this!! and its ruining me!! so please please help…
I was using office 2007 pro trial and did the above to stop the activation dialog box problem….only problem is now outlook wont send, i cant reply, i cant add to the calendar, word wont save, excel wont work…like an idiot i didnt back up the productID OR DigitalProductID files. I have tried everything to activate the product – reloaded the software but i get constant error messages – how do i replace the files i deleted and get everything back to normal so i can pay and activate the software?????

Ok, this works indeed for about 25 times opening a Office document and then you’re back to start. Keep your initial product code, after resetting the “NeverInstalled” back to the original value you may be able to re-install.

Close all Microsoft Office applications.
Run Register Editor by clicking on Start -> Run, and then type “regedit” in the Open box and press Enter key.
Navigate to the following registry key:

Note that inside the registry key, there should be another subkey that resembles the following:

I did this and it worked, but a few things were different.
I have Vista with the trial home & student version. When I first tried to clear my existing key, I couldnt find “Registration” under the 12.0 in regedit. Nor could I find “Office Setup Controller” under OFFICE12 when looking to edit the xml file in Windows Explorer.
I found after further research that I have a x64 system. So instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE
you need to look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration
and then to edit the xml file you should look under C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
instead of C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
And I also had to change the permissions for the xml file because it wouldnt let me save it. To do that, right click on the xml file (before opening it with notepad) and choose “properties”, then the “security” tab. Click on “advanced” and then “owner”, then “edit” then click on the name of the person under “change owner to” then click apply or ok. Close out the “properties” window and then reopen the “properties” and click on the “security” tab. Now click on the user name you chose and click “edit”. Click on the user name you chose again and then mark all of the empty boxes under “allow” in the permissions for users box. Click apply or ok and your done. Now you can edit the xml file and save it according to the instructions above.

Do not do this. After 60 days all Microsoft Office programs will eventually freeze. It’s just a hack not a permanent hack. It just gets rid of the activation screen. I repeat do not do this

Hey guys. To those having troubles saving the ‘proof’ file you have to change go into the ‘properties’ for the folder that holds that file and change the permissions. It is set by default to NOT allow you to change / modify. Just go into properties –> security and change the permissions so USERS (such as you) have full control. Then you can save the Proof.XML file!

This only works for awhile until u get the document to lock up and which u cnt edit it anymore.
I have installed the version of home and student 2007 package and followed this step to unistalled it.
1. changed the Proof.xml file back to AlwaysInstalled (make sure it spelt the same way!) then u can uninstalled the software. –> C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
If u dnt have access to changed the file then do this.
Right-clicked on the proof.xml file and choose properties –> in the security tab, click on the user group that ur logd on 2 then hit the edit button –> give the user full control and save.
I then downloaded the 60 trails from the website http://trial.trymicrosoftoffice.com/trialnewzealand/default.aspx?re_ms=oo&culture=en-NZ
–> pick a product, I choose the pro version –> click on the download now, if might ask u to register so just do that
–> download both of the files

It worked for a day, then quit and became a file reader. Sorta got excited and then disappointed. I think MS has already corrected this hack in newer versions of the download trail versions. Had to go through the long complicated process of the online MS Office 2007 uninstall instructions since couldn’t uninstall any other way. If you do have to do this, I solved my reinstall of old Office version by doing a system restore.

Nah, this is not actually working, yeah it stopped from asking activation but the office wont work anymore after it expires. All the features will be locked and cannot be use anymore and it makes you hard to uninstall the application afterwards.

Now, to the morons who say this hack works, let me suggest either that you have not used it 25 times yet, or you’re just happy you were able to uninstall it after the “hack” was reversed.
News flash; IF IT HAD TO BE UNINSTALLED BECAUSE OF LACK UP, THE HACK DOES NOT WORK!
I have read through all 600 posts, and here’s my question: Is there a fix for this BESIDES uninstalling? Post 266 is the only actual fix I see here, so:

guys.. if your ms office gets locked and you cannot unistall, just change back the xml file.. from neverinstalled back to Alwaysinstalled. save it and you should be able to unistall the trial. Not a crack to get your ms office working again but at least you get a choice of uninstaling it..

Hi, I did this about 2 months ago and I received an Email this morning saying my trial has officially ended with Microsoft.
Despite this hack it still disabled my account and I can no longer get it to work.
I’ve retried the hack and all the right registries are deleted and the “neverInstalled” is still in its place, but I can no longer access Office 2007 properly.
Help anyone?

I installed it on Vista.
It seems to work, but in reality it doesn’t work.
Alright, the messages do not appear, but as Jason experienced, after x number of tries, everything becomes readonly.
Trouble: you cannot make a clean uninstall. So it is just a fake hack.
My opinion: don’t waste your time with this!

This worked for about a month, now it opens and let’s me see the file but not modify in any way, it say’s it’s locked and the bottom states “This modification is not allowed because the document is locked” and the button to change it is also locked/grayed as well as other simple function buttons.

For everyone trying to figure out the last part of this “so-called” hack, I couldn’t figure out the last part but I found this easy way to save the xml.file. When you open the “proof.en” folder, either move the file or right click and export to desktop, when you attempt this, windows will ask you for admin permission, click ok. Once you get it on desktop do the whole right click “open with notepad” thing and do the always to never procedure and it will save. Then move the folder back to where it was previously, it will ask for admin permission again. This should work without messing with all the admin permission stuff. Just to let you know this isnt really a hack or whatever you want to call it. Still trying to figure out how to make MS Office work without any of this garbage hacking!

For any one having trouble doing the last part where you have to save, I have figured it out.
If you are unable to save the file after modifying it, you have to first right click on the proof.xml file and go to properties and then click on the security tab. You have to toy around with the users and permissions so you can have clearance to modify the file. Also make sure you are logged in as an Administrator. I just got it to work for my self after many trys, so don’t give up!

This worked and continues to work on my old IBM laptop, and worked initially for my newer dell laptop. Then roughly 4-5 days after hacking the office program on my dell, office no longer works and is locked and I am getting:

This worked great until I had to restart my computer. When I tried to use Word after the restart all of my documents are locked. I get this message at the bottom of the screen when I try to edit the document

It worked for two days, then all Office programs were essentially disabled (no editing/saving allowed).
My advice to anyone considering this hack: don’t waste your time. If you really want Office, just do a Google search for “office 2007 enterprise torrent” and download a torrent. You’ll need a torrent client such as uTorrent.

In Vista, totally works!
Once you open the file in your browser, right click on Proof. Scroll down to properties. Then go to security. Click on USERS then click EDIT. Once you’ve done that, give yourself permission to everything. It okay.
Then open that link in notepad, change the part talked about in the article and… ‘poof!’ totally works!

It worked for a while, but then it locked down. Then I couldn’t uninstall it.
In order to uninstall it, I needed to get the stuff that I deleted back. So this is what I did:
1. I clicked on the Microsoft Office Button in Word (the round button on the top left hand side).
2. Then I clicked ‘Word Options’.
3. On the list that pops up, I chose ‘run Microsoft Office Diagnostics’.
I let it do its thing, and it reinstalled the verification (original Proof.en) on my computer. Now I’m able to uninstall.

Found out how to uninstall
1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
2. Right click on Proof.XML file, select “Open With…” in the right click menu.
3. In the “Open With” window, select Notepad to be used to open the XML file. In Vista, if you can’t see the Notepad option, simply double click the “Other Programs” to unhide it.
4. Scroll down to the bottom of the Proof.XML to locate the following lines:

This did not work for me. I did the saving the proof file in a different location and pasting it over the original like someone mentioned. There were also proof.es and proof.fr folders in which I also changed the “always” to “never”. No go.
I am guessing this doesn’t work for all versions of Office?

hey J thanks for your reply, i tried what u suggested and it still wont let me uninstall it, when i did the hack for the first time it gave me 15 uses before i had to purchase this was after it had already expired. so i opened and closed it 15 times and after that it wouldent let me in. so now when i try to uninstall it a message comes up saying “setup cannot continue bcause a required file is corrupted or missing”???….anymore suggestions

@Rami: You didn’t screw anything up. The hack is what prevents you from uninstalling it. Just reverse the hack, change “neverInstalled” back to “AlwaysInstalled” and you should be able to uninstall the program through Control Panel.
Wouldn’t let you use the program without buying after 25 uses, right?

This “hack” DID, did being the key word, at one time work!!!! I have Office 07 installed and working for 6+ months using this, including use of Windows Update!!!
MS released a new installer that checks for this now.. All this hack now accomplishes is that it stops the “nag screen” to activate, but still requires it (after 25 uses or 60 days from first use)

I have office 2007, running vista premium..unfortunately doesnt work! changed and saved the proof.en file no probs, but when using word or excel, features are still disabled. Seems all i have done is remove the pop up window that requests activation key. Office 2007 was pre-installed on my laptop with 60 day trial, thats now expired. This really worked for me, I was unable to replace the proof file, so I saved the one I changed somewhere else, then I deleted the original in proof.en folder and I was finally able to put it the changed one in this folder,

You need a key of final activation no key try 60 days at first. Then, in the conversion of software into final version, software will want an Internet activation or phones for verification ., Apply information zip.

If you have done this hack and want to uninstall Microsoft office than just change neverInstalled back to AlwaysInstalled(make sure the A and I are capitalized). Voila, its that simple.

I strongly suggest that everyone downloads an Office trial and then finds a keygen, rather than use this method. It works for a while, but now I am now stuck unable to uninstall software that has all the features disabled and I don’t have time to go through all the steps listed by “Frustration Station.” This has cost me a lot of time!!

I feel the need to post. Many of the problems discussed (along with their answers) did nothing to quell my anger towards Microsoft’s office products. I have purchased new computers and new operating systems which have voided my rights to use my legally purchased versions of office, so I turned to less legal means. Being a college student, you don’t get a whole lot of time to screw around with money or (dis)functional software. The problem I ran into was not being able to uninstall software previously installed, especially the trial versions. I attempted at using the uninstall software that many of you have recommended, but to no avail. It hasn’t worked completely, yet, but I think I found a way to completely rid myself of ALL office files with much less frustration. (Trust me, I tried control panel/program uninstall method. It only gave me the same error message “Setup cannot continue because a required file is either corrupted or not available. Run Setup again from the original source disc or download location.” After about 6 hours of research (I REALLY needed to fix this so I could do my homework. My grade, and about $700 of class fees depended upon it!) I came to this website, hosted by none-other than Microsoft. (Their one saving grace) If you go to this website, it will show you one more location other than the registry that these tricky Microsoft files will be hiding.

Simply follow the directions, and you should be on your way to reinstalling in no time.
And for heaven’s sake, if they tell you to create a back up for files in the registry, DO IT. YOU DO NOT WANT TO HAVE THIS HASSLE YOU FOR SIX HOURS.

I just used the hack and it worked great (so far from what I’m reading). Anyone lately have any problems? I tried uninstalling as is to see what would happen and it obviously gave me a corrupt file error, fine. I changed neverInstalled back to AlwaysInstalled, and went back to Control Panel and Office asked me if I wanted to uninstall as usual, so I’m figuring that part is fine. Is it still only 25 times you can use it?
Also, I’m trying to find out where I can turn off the automatic updates. Any help?

JAY, John, redsock, etc. You believe the hack works, but it only skip the activation screen dialog. The program continues to count times of usage/days, so your office will expire (most of the office interface button will be blocked) after 25 times (for full version) or 60 days (for trial version).
I suggest you all to switch HERE and read post 253. Many people got their office activated by following this method.

i tried it with the 25-times-trial of office pro, pre-installed on my new computer. there was no product-id, so i just did the changes to that xml-file. it worked great. thanx.

This did not work for me. I did the saving the proof file in a different location and pasting it over the original like someone mentioned. There were also proof.es and proof.fr folders in which I also changed the “always” to “never”. No go.
I am guessing this doesn’t work for all versions of Office?

Hi, I did the crack a couple of weeks ago and every worked fine. Then just tried to use it today and it says “this modification is not allowed because the selection is locked”.
I tried the suggestion below and saved the file and then replaced it but it hasn’t worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it’s saying “This modification is not allowed because the selection is locked!” it’s because it believes your trial key has expired. You’ll need to do the first steps listed on this note to remove the old product key. I had to and it took a minute but worked.

It worked for me!!! Thank you very! Everything was easy (the regedit part), accept the last part (modifying the Proof.xml file). But I figured it out! All I had to do was save the Proof.xml file into another folder (ie. My Documents), since it wouldn’t let me save it DIRECTLY to the Microsoft folder (as in the directions). Anyways, make sure that when you’re saving to another folder, that the file has the same file name as the original and you have the edited information () as in the directions. Now, copy the Proof.xml file that you JUST saved/created and paste it into the Microsoft folder. If you’re on Vista like me, you will receive a pop-up window by Windows that asks you to either move and replace, or etc. Just choose the move and replace option and agree to the change (you have to be the Administrator for that to work). And there you have it, Microsoft Word and other Office programs are now able to open up without any activation windows. I hope that helps out someone.

I have Vista and i purchased Office Home and Student editon 07 but when i first loaded vista it gave a 30 try trial version of Office Pro 07, when i try to save the xml it says it cannot create the file, i assumed it had to do with going into the regedit and deleting the Product id & Digital Id but I can only find the Digital Id for Home and Student, can any one help. i got office 2007 ultimate (sp1) REALLY ACTIVATED (NO GREY OUT after 25 times AND when i go to “options”->”resources” and click “activate” it says “the product has already been activated”!!!). Not tried, but it should work for all office 2007 editions!

I found the answer to this problem. First as andrew said before you have to cahnge the “neverinstalled” to “alwaysinstalled” in the proof file. Then, for the vista users you might have a file on the desktop that gives you de serial number for the free trial, open it an copy it, if you don’t have it here it goes the one I used:

Open Word and paste it on the serial number’s box, install it, and finally uninstall microsoft office from your computer.

Found out how to uninstall
1. In Windows Explorer, browse to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
2. Right click on Proof.XML file, select “Open With…” in the right click menu.
3. In the “Open With” window, select Notepad to be used to open the XML file. In Vista, if you can’t see the Notepad option, simply double click the “Other Programs” to unhide it.

well i was having the problem with changing the “Proof” file in Vista.
but there is an easy and stupid way to get around it lol.
just save the edited file to ur desktop first,
then copy the edited verson from ur desktop into the correct place of where the file actualy was.
when pasting it in the correct position just overwrite the existing one that is there (the old one).

I tried this with a original version of Office 2007 which had used up all it’s install credits. First I totally deleted the registry dealing with Office12. I then installed not putting in the activation and modified the XML file as noted and this works fine. Service Pack 1 (SP1) can now be manully installed by downloading it from the Office wedsite. The only other file that is currntly missing is the Update for Outlook Junk Mail (KB944965) that can also be downloaded manually and installed in the same fashion. Good luck all..

Al if that file is not there the program wont work anyway even if you hack it. I suggest you remove the program completely, dont just use the uninstall in Windows. Then Reinstall.

I used microsoft explorer to find the file and this is where I found some folders with the file and the same name:
C:\WORKSSETUP\OffHST07Trial\Proofing.en-us
now the question is which one I pick and then what do I do with it??

Wow, it totally worked, and I use Vista. Suggestion for other Vista users: even though my permissions were set to full access, Vista wouldn’t let me save the Proof XML file in its original folder after I’d changed it.
So I just saved it on the desktop, then dragged the new file to the folder where the original was. When Vista warned me that another file existed there with the same name, I just told it to replace the old file and delete the old one.
Then I just closed out the window and opened the program. Everything works fine! Thanks!

i went through this a few months ago and it worked for a time. it’s now locked again and i want to uninstall EVERYTHING related to MS Office but it won’t let me. I tried to uninstall by going through the Add/Remove Programs function but it said there was an error and that I should consult the original installation software, which I no longer have. yeah if u want to modify the XML file, just open it on explorer, right click-view source, change the file to neverinstalled, then save it with as a notebook file with another name such as “proof2.txt” and thennn move that into the folder where the proof.xml is at. now you are going to delete the proof.xml and rename proof2.txt to proof.txt.
if everything goes well, it should work. that is what i did.

Heres my problem, I installed office 2007 Trial, used a serial and then went to regedit and hacked it so it worked perfectly AND turned updates off but little did i know, Vista is very, very smart. Vista has a program that checks all programs and it picked up that my office was not the real deal, so now i have exhausted both pro and enterprise, i have removed the proof.en file but that only helps me remove office but how do i get it back up and running? please help me!

I wasn’t complaining – you are right, I should have read all of the posts (so should everyone else who says it doesn’t work or you can’t uninstall it). I belatedly read through the posts and uninstalled 2007 using the advice in post 138, and I reinstalled 2003, which I think I prefer anyway.
One question I have, which may be a completely different issue. When Office 2007 greyed out, my computer stopped displaying the open programs/windows in a row across the bottom of my screen: instead, they are displayed with scroll arrows, which is a pain. I’ve searched to find a way to change this display, but can’t do so. Any ideas?

I assume you have read and done the steps below? You will note it says Proof.xml? Just in case you have not :-
To do it you double click ‘my computer’ on your computer desktop screen. Then double click on ‘C’ drive. Double click on ‘program files’ and just keep following the list below until you can actually see the file called proof.xml you will want to work on this file but the problem comes when you go to save it. So to make things easier BEFORE you open proof.xml you have to alter ‘permissions’. So you :
right click on Proof.xml
Click on middle box ’security’ to open it.
Click on ‘Edit’ to open it
click on ‘users *your name*’
(where obviously its your name in *your name*)
Tick every box under ‘allow’
click ‘ok’
So now you can open then alter Proof.xml and save it.
Hope this helps.

I followed the instructions. I never updated, I turned the automatic updates etc off. Did this 6 months ago and its still working. I use it everyday.
I also installed professional on my daughters computer. Followed instructions still going strong since last October and she is never off it. Homework etc everyday. So thanks Frankc, it does work for some!

Nope. Doesn’t work. It blanks out after 25 uses. It only removed the annoying window. Search for an Office 2007 ENTERPRISE torrent. Enterprise doesn’t require activation. Just a key.

Yes there is. Its all in here. You HAVE to remove the old 2007 COMPLETELY before re-installing and getting the hack to work properly. You NEVER have to, or even should, enter the serial/code. If you do you have to remove it.
Anyway the answers to all your questions are there in this section of the forum. I have recieved too much abuse (from others who did not read everything) to bother putting up the details again.
I have installed it on 5 computers and it worked, and still is working.
Three things.
REMOVE ALL THE OLD OFFICE.
DO NOT UPDATE WINDOWS OR OFFICE.
READ ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS, NOT JUST SOME.
I have said it before and I still get the old “it doesnt work on mine its greyed out” messages (and worse)
Quick example. Did you read the bit where you have to download software from microsoft to remove the old version??????

I wish I had read all of the comments before I proceeded with this. I followed all of the instructions, but the hack only worked for about three weeks, then it greys out. I’m now in a position where I can’t use any of my files, including emails, Word and Excel.

What Frank does not seem to understand in his complete assurance that he is right and everyone else is an idiot….
This hack only works for a short time. And unless you backup your registry before making the deletions and return the proof file to its original state completely, you cannot uninstall. And before Frank goes on again about updates….it’s AUTOMATIC. So anyone with internet access receives the updates whether they want to or not. Keep in mind further installations later will require you to get rid of the hacked version. Don’t bother with this hack unless you need it for something urgently and don’t mind going through all the hassle afterwards to uninstall.

great hack indeed, but removes the popup only, 25 hits rule remains.
i used standard Office2007 initially, hack worked, used >25times, greyed out.
removed entire office12 in registry.
tried to uninstall, didnt go off.
removed Office 12 folder completely, one dll file couldnt be deleted, i moved it anyway from tht folder.
then tried to unistall, sez, the program is already removed, so it removed frm the list.
Then installed Home Student Office with same procedure, there were no popups or probs, working fine, have to see wht happens further..
this time will be real test of the hack..

ya this doesnt work but for a little while. I saw that someone tried to uninstall but had problems.
to uninstall got the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE12\Office Setup Controller\Proof.en\
and delete proof.xml file or drag it out of the folder and reinstall the trial. then you will be able to uninstall office 2007 trial. it seems to know that you changed the file even if you change it back so you get the cant remove error or cant install error. If you get proof.xml out of that folder it will install fine so that you can remove it.(you have to re-install before you can remove or you will get a diff error.)

That was great while it lasted .. however I did something like remove more reg keys later (with CCleaner), removed the RR files that were possibly part of the suite, or installed the ‘genuine Windows validation tool’ from Windows Update that caused the trial to expire again. If someone knows a way to get it back plz let me know.

THIS IS HOW TO UNINSTALL:
You don’t have to worry about the regedit stuff. You can leave it.
Go back to the proof.xml file and change the “neverinstalled” to “Alwaysinstalled.”
This is the important part: THE A IN ALWAYS MUST BE CAPITALIZED. I know it sounds silly, but if you type in a lowercase “a” it will complain about a missing file.
After you input the line, you can uninstall normally from the control panel.
This works. I’ve tried it twice.

I did this and ran into the same problem after opening it around 25 times. Couldn’t uninstall, so then I changed neverinstalled back to Alwaysinstalled and deleted the whole {911200 (after making a reg backup of course). Then I installed office enterprise off of piratebay, and opened that up 36 times, so I guess it’s working. Don’t try this method. Just get it off of piratebay.

I downloaded the enterprise version (here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2D1189BF-D86A-4ACF-9DCC-4D61F500AD6D&displaylang=en) instead of the other available version. The enterprise version is only available for use of 25 times and after that, you’re done. While installing the Enterprise version I read the licensing statements and found out that I was right about what Microsoft did to stop pirates.
It says specifically on there that the system automatically updates to validate your product key and subscription information which means that they will always be able to detect it. Once they find out that the information isn’t valid and that you haven’t paid for it, it says that “your software will not work properly”.
This is the result of so many screwed systems. They want you to go out and buy it. So what I did, I researched the actual update software and found out the actual components of it, so that I could go into the registry, deactivate it, and then try the hack again.
I was thinking about doing this because it would probably be the most sensible idea, but at the risk of either restarting my entire system or buying it, I decided to keygen the shit. You can try my proposed statement above or keygen. It all produces the same result.

They can detect that the copy was hacked very, very easily people. I’m not sure what they do, but I think that they cancel your subscription and then delete a component that allows you to uninstall which is why a lot of people are having the problem of not being able to uninstall. I’ve tried just about everything. Every thread of information that involves Office 2007 I’ve deleted and “Microsoft Office 2007 Professional” is still present in the uninstall list.
I’ve deleted all of the other components of Office, but that still is present, and whenever I try to delete it, it says that the installation is corrupted. So the best thing for you to do people is, restart your entire system and try the hack again and this time DO NOT UPDATE IT! Microsoft is becoming smarter everyday, don’t forget it.

Blimey I am going to say this one last time. I can not be bothered with guys who dont follow the instructions, swear at you and swear that they did follow ALL the instructions. You try to help and all you get is abuse.
You DONT use the uninstall from the control panel. One more time YOU DO NOT uninstall from the control panel. You download the uninstall software from microsoft then use that. You then manually uninstall EVERYTHING to do with office. MANUALLY understand ??? select file then select delete??? You then delete EVERYTHING to do with office from the registry. If you do a search in regedit and your hard drive and find office or word etc then you obviously have not deleted everything.
The rest well and I am not going to bother telling you. Its all there. I have installed office on 5 different computers. Using professional office and the student and home addition. Did this some months ago and its still running fine on all of them. Including 3 of them that originally suffered from the greying out syndrome.

oh yeah, you have to change the proof.xml file back to “AlwaysInstalled” from “neverInstalled” to uninstall the application from windows control panel/add-remove programs

I did the hack 2 weeks ago and the office seemed like working until yesterday. Since then I can not edit or write any thing in any office products. It says that the document is locked.
So I tried to install a new copy and enter a new serial but it gives my an installation error. I can not uninstall the office either.
I tried to click on the activation button and enter a different Serial key but the button doesn’t function.
So I’m stock. What’s the solution genius?

I’ve had it installed and used this hack over 2 months ago… my laptop is on a wireless feed and I haven’t had that problem. That you mention. What might have happened is that it tried to automatically update your Office software.. and the instructions specifically state not to do that. Try a clean uninstall and do the hack again… thats my suggestion… just make sure your PC doesn’t try to automatically update it.

Since this crack doesn’t work except to waive the nag message, you need to change the “NeverInstalled” to “AlwaysInstalled” if you wish to uninstall. Otherwise, you’ll only get the error message.

I’ve followed the topic word for word. Really. (except I’ve changed Proof.fr instead Proof.en).
During some days (perhaps ~2 weeks), it has worked, more that 25 uses I think.
I did not update Windows or Office.
But today, it doesn’t work anymore.

I think I’ve given myself access…the “Access key Request” no longer comes up…but I can’t do anything. All commands are grey (meaning, I can’t use them) I can’t even type. I must be doing something wrong.

Ok, I see. Next problem I run in to is that I am denied permission to windows installer clean up when I try to run it.
Secondly you said to whatch out with the removing the product registry. Is there enyghting else to it than removing it? In that case I think I can manage, or are there any other tricks to it.

If you COMPLETELY uninstall it, see below, including all registry enteries and program enteries you will be back to scratch so to speak. So even a trial version will install and run, if it wont then you have not comepletly uninstalled the last version.

Well I’ve found no matter what you do, after you have used it 25 times thats it.
Changing the proofen file only takes away the annoying pop up box, and it still counts down your usages, except now you dont know how many times you have left before Total Lockdown.
Even if you remove it off your system, there is still something in your computer saying it’s been installed before.
And It wont let you reload it again, with out formatting the whole hard drive.
Has anybody been able to reload it again, and use the hacks again?

Wow, thanks so much. It worked perfectly. The thing with Vista is that if you try and edit it with Notepad and try to save it, it says that you don’t have the privileges to do so. Then I tried to open the file with Dreamweaver and edit it there
Then it said I couldn’t save in that file at all. What I had to end up doing was copy the file with the revision, Delete the other one, and paste that one in there. Hope that helped for all the Vista users out there.
Word of advice to you all too, switch to Mac or Linux. Windows is not worth it.

Childish. This crack does work, you may not be able to follow instructions but I, and dozens of others, have managed to get it to work. Why the DO NOT USE IT tag???? Makes it sound like some nasty virus.
Can I suggest that -
1. You COMPLETELY remove the office application you currently have. Instructions below.
2. re-install and follow directions as listed
3. Never update windows or office because as soon as you do office will grey out again.

Thanks so much for all your help. My problem is that everything worked but then all of a sudden, it locked up. I changed proof.en file back “neverInstall” to “AlwaysInstall” and uninstalled the entire Office suite. I installed the Home and Student Suite again but it is still locked. I did removed the Product ID as well and Digital Product ID as well as put the proof file back to neverInstall. Still locked. Can you please help me asap?

I couldn’t believe it worked so easily, Here’s a trial evaluation key, maybe using this in conjunction with the registry editing helps.

The guy who wanted help in slot 56. Know how you feel. To get rid of office completely to do a completely new install this is what I did. I downloaded a program called “windows installer clean up” from microsoft. Used it. Then I went to the registry and removed entirely the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Registration\{90120000-0030-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE
Key. I then opened the Office folder and removed everything. Office was then completely off my system. It worked fine for me no problems, but unless you know what you are doing I would not fiddle with the registry.
Please let us know if you had any luck. Not saying if it did or did not work is just as annoying as ………”and not just write i have the same problem too.” Good luck. Looking forward to hearing what happens!

On vista.. This hack will NOT work. Although if you happen to have access to a computer which has XP.. If you edit it on XP then replace the file on vista with the edited file from XP then it will work just like it said it would.
