Hack to Run DreamScene in Vista Home Premium, Basic, Starter, Business and Enterprise
Own a non-Ultimate edition of Windows Vista, but very like the DreamScene application featured in Ultimate Extras package? With most OEM brand computers factory installed Windows Vista Home Premium or Home Basic, and corporates go for Windows Vista Enterprise edition, Microsoft will be earning a lot if everybody upgrade to Ultimate version with Windows Anytime Upgrade just for DreamScene. There’re alternative programs in VideoLAN’s VLC Player and BS.Player that can be used to set video as desktop background wallpaper, however, this is a hack to allow users in any editions of Vista to run native and original Windows DreamScene from Microsoft.
Hack to install Windows DreamScene in non-Ultimate Vista
- Download the patched DreamScene dll files package
NonUltimateDreamScene.zip (alternative link)(Sorry, Demand for Immediate Take Down received). - Unpack the archive content to a folder.
- Right click on InstallDreamScene.bat and select “Run as Administrator” to install Windows DreamScene on your non-Ultimate version of Vista. Answer “Y” to continue. You can also open elevated command prompt with administrator rights and type InstallDreamScene.bat to execute the batch script.
- Restart your computer.
Note: Apparently you can still download the patched version of DreamScene somewhere, however, most is offering incorrect version of install script, which was fixed in second edition. If you encounter problem, simply follow manual method below. Non-English version try to install English language pack. Please provide feedback at the forum or comment.
Voila, your system now will run DreamScene without paying hefty Ultimate price. If you prefer to manually to install the patched DreamScene DLL files, here’s the step-by-step guide:
- Download the patched DreamScene files as above and unpack to a folder.
- Copy DreamScene.dll to %WinDir%\System32\ folder.
- Copy DreamScene.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US\ folder.
- In Windows Explorer, navigate to %WinDir%\System32\ folder.
- Right click on themecpl.dll file, and click on Properties on right click menu.
- Select the Security tab, then click Advanced.
- Subsequenly select the Owner tab, click Edit button. Press Continue (or log in if you’re not Administrator) on any User Access Control prompt.
- Select your Vista logon user name, then click OK button. Then click OK in any dialog window that pops up, and press OK again at Advanced Security Settings window.
- On Security tab, click the Edit button. Press Continue (or log in if you’re not already an Administrator) on User Access Control prompt.
- Click Add button, and click on Advanced button. Next press Find Now button, and then select your logged on user name. Press OK when done.
- Click OK again on Select Users or Groups dialog.
- On Permissions for themecpl.dll window, highlight your user name, and check the box next to “Full Control” under “Allow” column. Hit OK when done, and confirm any message. Click OK twice to exit from ownership taking process.
- Rename the file themecpl.dll in %WinDir%\System32 to themecpl.dll.original.
- Copy the patched version of themecpl.dll to %WinDir%\System32\ folder.
- Repeat step 4 - 12 on themecpl.dll.mui file located in %WinDir%\System32\en-US\ folder.
- After taking ownership, rename the file %WinDir%\System32\en-US\themecpl.dll.mui to themecpl.dll.mui.original.
- Copy the patched version of themecpl.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US\ folder.
- Create a new folder in %windir%\Web named “Windows DreamScene” (without quotes). This is the location to place all your videos want to set as DreamScene wallpaper, and can be easily configured via Control Panel Personalization applet.
- Lastly, import and merge DreamScene.reg to registry.
- Reboot computer.
Using DreamScene
After patching, right click on any blank space on Desktop, select “Personalize”, then click on “Desktop Background”. Under location, select “Windows DreamScene Content”, and then select a animated video you want.

Not working on my vista home premium english language version. No option for dreamscene content. When I attempt to manually type in the file name for the dreamscene file, I get an error message stating” The file is not not one of the supported file types which include bmp jpg jpeg and dib. Manual method worked. It appeared as though the only thing the automated method failed to to was to place a copy of of the DreamScene.dll into the system32 folder and a copy of DreamScene.dll.mui into the us-en folder. I performed all steps as documented, but I think if I were to do it over again, simply copying the 2 aforementioned files would have done the trick.

BAT file had several fails, so I tried manually. Now the ‘Personalize’ window won’t open. Opens for a flash, and then closes. I try to click ‘Change Desktop Background’ in the Control Panel Applet, and I get a registry error, that it cannot find a specific location.
This sucks, now I’ll have to reinstall the OS

WARNING: Do NOT run the bat file! It does not copy the files correctly. This does work, if you double-check that the files are where they’re supposed to be, or do the manual install, but the automatic batch file does NOT copy things correctly… and you may end up having to format your computer (do NOT run System Repair or System Restore after running the batch file, if you happen to run into problems).
The problem I ran into was a repeating “Windows Explorer has stopped responding”. The error would show up, then Explorer would automatically restart… then fail again. (In fact, I’m still trying to fix it.)

Wow that was interesting. I hope someone from this blog posted this notice. If not, this violates a number of state and federal laws. This information is required to be kept private. I do not believe Microsoft would commit such a “stupid” oversight.
In actuality this is little more than a threat by a legal department incapable of actually realizing their “actions.” It is simply a take down notice, you could safely ignore it if you want (though I would consult your own legal representative).
Either way it does not matter because people will simply upgrade their valid copy of Vista to Ultimate (which is very easy to do). If you don’t believe me, just google it.

I installed it manually to my swedish Vista Home Premium but it doesn’t quite work. When I select ‘Windows Dreamscene content’ from the dropdown list it won’t show files with the .dream extension, only .mpg files?!? The mpg files play nicely on my desktop but Vista doesn’t recognize those .dream files. Some missing registry entries or what? Yes, I did doubleclick on Dreamscene.reg…
Anyone have any ideas?

Mikey, the .dream files are nothing to do with Microsoft as such but produced by Stardock for Ultimate systems. The program to use .dream files with Ultimate DreamScene is freeware but it checks your system and as yet there’s no way you can install it on non-Ultimate PCs. So .dream files are out of bounds for the time being. x

A must have for Dreamscene is DeskScapes, this allows .Dream files to be used as the desktop backgrounds. Mostly all sreamscene backgrounds are being made as these .Dream files now as they run smoother, however the program DeskScapes checks to see if your OS is Vista Ultimate which with this hack it is not. So the next thing to do would be to get DeskScapes to work on any version of vista or if there is a way to make it think that you have Vista Ultimate then that too could work. i used this guide and it works
one problem tho,i purchased a Dell Inspiron system and it came with Vista Basic. After i used the hack i was able to run DreamScenes theme, but how come my CPU load run constantly on 25-40%, if i switch to a picture as wallpaper the load drop to 0-2%. I think my system’s good enough to run it.

Hi, i have installed dream scene and it is in the personalize menu, however when i try to select dream scene content i get a task bar icon that says DreamScene can only run when Windows AERO sceme is selected. So….i managed to get this works if i right click a video file and select set as wallpaper, but “dreamscene contect” doesn’t appear in the drop down menu….plz help

I’m having the exact same problem as Mikey commented earlier, but I didn’t see a response: I have everything working, video will run as the wallpaper, I can see the DreamScene Content on the drop down, but my system doesn’t see (or run) the .DREAM files. Any ideas?

MR> .dream files are propietary of stardock´s deskcape sofware that only runs (for the moment) in vista ultimate, there is no way tu run .dreams files in vista home right now.

1. Descargue los archivos remendados de DreamScene como arriba y desempaquete a una carpeta. 2. Copy DreamScene.dll a %WinDir%\System32 \ a la carpeta. 3. Copy DreamScene.dll.mui a %WinDir%\System32\en-US \ a la carpeta. 4. En el explorador de Windows, navegue a %WinDir%\System32 \ a la carpeta. 5. seleccionar archivo de themecpl.dll, y características en menú boton derecho. 6. Seleccione la lengüeta de la seguridad, después avanzado. 7. selecciona la lengüeta del propetario, y toma posesion del archivo. 8. Seleccione su nombre del usuario de la conexión de Vista, después el botón ACEPTABLE. Entonces acepta todo y date permisos para todo en el archivo 12. En los permisos para la ventana de themecpl.dll, destaque su nombre del usuario, y compruebe la caja al lado de “control completo” debajo “permiten” la columna. Golpee MUY BIEN cuando está hecho, y confirme cualquier mensaje. Chasque MUY BIEN dos veces para salir de la propiedad que toma proceso. 13. Retitule el archivo themecpl.dll en %WinDir%\System32 a themecpl.dll.original. 14. Copy la versión remendada de themecpl.dll a %WinDir%\System32 \ a la carpeta. 15. Repita el paso 4 - 12 en el archivo de themecpl.dll.mui situado en %WinDir%\System32\en-US \ carpeta. 16. Después de tomar propiedad, retitule el archivo %WinDir%\System32\en-US\themecpl.dll.mui a themecpl.dll.mui.original. 17. Copy la versión remendada de themecpl.dll.mui a %WinDir%\System32\en-US \ a la carpeta. 18. Cree una carpeta nueva en “Windows nombrado %windir%\Web DreamScene” (sin comillas). Ésta es la localización para colocar todos sus videos desea fijar como papel pintado de DreamScene, y se puede configurar fácilmente vía applet de la personalización del panel de control. 19. importar el DreamScene.reg al registro. 20. reboot.

One note - be sure to be plugged in when you “install” this feature. I haven’t found the toggle yet, but Dreamscene only runs when it is plugged in. Automatically turns off when it is not plugged. Probably a power saving thing.

I tried to ollydbg the DreamScene installer, with no success. I can’t find out where the program checks if Vista Ultimate is running.

Have read the article about VLC Player -
And did get it to work with some
DreamScenes made in Windows Media Player Format. - Sea Turdle, Underwater, Clouds.
It work !
But I wonder if it is possible to play those DreamScenes, who are in DREAM.fil´s format -
On Shardocks page.
SharkPit, WasserFall, FutureWorld and so on.
I have tried - but without any luck at all !
Have Vista Home Premium 32 bit.
Guess the files must be translated to another
format then DREAM.fil !
But what ?

OK, to play .DREAM Files on a Home or enterprise pc install DREAMSCENE as instructed above, then donwload Stardock deskscapes and install it, between the 2 programs you will get most dream files to play as if you were running Ultimate.

yeh i got it working but its not that good, u cant see your icons and well it got annoying, no the the actualy moving backgrounds but i could change back to haveing a regular background, had to restart and uninstall the program

man, just go on the internet and download a windows ultimate retail cd image run it and bam! you now have windows vista ultimate. i get updates for ultimate and everything. to microsoft i am a paying customer. find a crack or a cd key somewheres online and your good. i know first hand this works because thats what i did. my pc came with home premium on purpose because i wasnt paying 150 to 200 dollars more. now look at all that money saved!

I tried manual installing this but I got frustrated and deleted everything I added/edited. Now, my window for the desktop background and customizing colors won’t open! Would someone PLEASE tell me how to restore these windows. I can still put up desktop pictures but I would feel more secure if I had that window.
And yes, I tried every possible system restore and the computer says it had an error and couldn’t make any changes.

I installed it manually exactly like the instructions stated. When I right click and go to personalize….the window just flashes and goes away. When I open it through control panel….it just opens up a blank window. Please help!!

Great tutorial! Thanks a lot! Explained perfectly, worked perfectly. The only confusing part was “merging” the registry…I wasn’t quite sure at first what that entailed. But I got it. It just means to double click it and click Yes and so on on all the boxes that come up.
