Nikon (NEF) RAW Codec for Windows Vista Free Download
Most professional photographers especially those who are using digital SLR camera prefer to shoot in ‘RAW’ mode, which outputs image in file format that is proprietary to their camera make and model (e.g. .CR2, .NEF, etc.), which stores greater quality of details compared with JPG image file. However, unlike JPEG format, RAW image format cannot be easily opened in Windows operating system prior to Vista without RAW conversion program or third-party image manipulation software. With Windows Vista, the camera manufacturers can take advantage of extensible platform that allows support for these (and other) new file formats to be added to Windows by way of codec.
Other than Canon and Olympus, Nikon has also released Nikon RAW codec for Windows Vista. The Nikon RAW Codec is a software module that enables you to handle RAW image files (.NEF or Nikon Electronic Format) under Microsoft Windows Vista with the same ease as JPEG or TIFF images. With the Nikon RAW codec installed, users can view the Nikon RAW files and thumbnails throughout Windows Vista, and perform most of the same tasks that can be performed on JPG files in the Photo Gallery on their RAW files, including but not limited to view, tag, rate and print.

HI
I have not been able to find any software anywhere that supports Vista 64 bit and Nikon RAW image processing.
Even RAW image viewing seems nigh on impossible. Google’s Picassa sort of works- you can view RAW images but Picassa insists that the RAW images are 700kb in size when in reality they are 5mb each. As a result, in Picassa there is no perceived or actual quality difference between a RAW image and JPEG- what a shame.
I’ve installed Adobe Photoshop CS2 and that doesnt work either- I tried their RAW plugin from version 3 to 3.9 and none of them work ! Adobe’s website says that 64 bit RAW processing is not supported in CS3 and will not be supported in the near future.
Where does that leave me ??? I have thousands of RAW images that I cant even view let alone edit !!!

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 supports RAW processing on Vista X64 and has an excellent workflow. Bibble pro works as well.

Nikon Capture NX works great with Vista 64 bit and is the best tool in my opinion for NEF file manipulation.

Vista? lol
We upgraded from XP to Mac OSX. We use vista on our macs for testing, but our entire 3d/hd video lab runs fine… 64 bit and supports just about every raw format (nef included) even in preview. hmmm… though without pc, we never would have been able to start the business, since macs used to be a joke until around 1999.

Hi there, I intalled ViewNX V1.0 (for free) today and it seems to be working fine with Vista 64 bit. Here is the link http://support.nikontech.com/cgi-bin/nikonusa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=14370

Has anyone found a solution that allows viewing NEF (from a D300) thumbnails in Windows Explorer when running Vista 64-bit.
Also, there’s a newer version available than the one linked to in this article, so visit the page, not the direct download link. Still, it only officially supports Vista 32-bit

I am still looking for NEF thumbnail support for XP 64 bit. No luck yet. This is ridiculous. It can’t be THAT hard to develop a fix for this…
Let’s go Nikon. Get it together.

I am very frustrated by not being able to see thumbnails of my D300 NEFs while I explore in Vista on this most powerful HP6700 notebook I just got. Luckily I am able to work with ViewNX and CaptureNX which absolutely terrific imaging tools that work together well! Meanwhile Adobe PS,lightroom and Corel, which I use too, are behind the eight ball somewhat.. NOTHING’s EASY.. I guess.. anyone have any updates? please advise.

I guess there is no choice but wait for Nikon to get their act together and release a 64-bit version of the NEF WIC codec.

Thanks David- works great in Vista 64

You can use the standard Nikon Codec on Vista 64, you just have to make sure you run the 32bit photo gallery and not the 64bit. To do this, run it from the Program Files (x86) directory.
Its the simple!

Thanks - great tip. 2 quick questions- any idea how to make the Nikon Codec display Raw/ NEF files in Windows Explorer ? And how do you make the 32bit version of Photo Gallery the default version ?
Thanks
