Restore, Recover and Show Recycle Bin Icon on Desktop in Vista
The recycle bin icon on the desktop in Windows Vista can be easily been deleted or removed by user. If you cannot find the recycle bin on the desktop, or the icon has lost, or you have accidentally delete it, here’s the simple recovery method to get back or unhide the recycle bin icon to the desktop.
Note: Please ensure that only the recycle bin icon is hidden, and you have not chose to turn off displaying of all desktop icons. You can check the “Show Desktop Icons” setting whether it has been disabled by right clicking on Desktop, and select View from the right click context menu.
To recover and show the Recycle Bin icon back to the desktop:
- Open Personalization by clicking on the Vista Orb Start button, then clicking Control Panel, follow by Appearance and Personalization, and finally Personalization. For shortcut, simply right click on Desktop and select Personalization.

- In the left pane of Personalization window, under the Tasks section, click on Change desktop icons link.

- In the Desktop Icons Settings window, check and tick the check box next to Recycle Bin to show the icon on the desktop.

- Click OK.

I have window xp so I don’t even see this “personalize” icon by right clicking. I also went to control panel, I found “display”, then get into “desktop”, “customize desktop” but I only have 4 options to check off
1. my documents
2. my computer
3. My network places
4. Internet explorer
I saw recycle bin (full) and recycle bin (empty) icons in the box but no box for me to check off, I tried to click on the icon, but not working:( I’m really in trouble, would you please help? Thanks a lot.
