There is WGA validation, WGA notification, and also a check when adding service packs. You must address ALL of these things. The patch that this page refers to does NOT address all of these issues. To do a fresh install of XP that is patched and works, you need to start with a cracked version of XP slipstreamed with SP1. If you start with just XP, then you might run into problems that are awkward to deal with. Having put XP SP1 on, you then add SP2 using the full exe version from MS. (If they have updated this to check the installation, then you need a copy of the version they were putting out before) Then you need to deal with WGA validation. This is dealt with using earlier patches like the one for 1.5.540.0. (Thses patches used to also deal with WGA notifications, but that aspect doesn’t work any more) Then you need an updated WGA notification patch like the one this page refers to. If you do all this, then it should be able to access the Windows update site.
