Windows Tiny2003 eXperience Edition for Slim OS and Faster XP Gaming on Windows 2003 R2 Server

Ever feel that Windows XP is not fast enough, especially for ultimate gaming experience? Windows Tiny2003 eXperience Edition is a minimalist operating system based on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition but looks and feels as it’s Windows XP which has been fully tweaked and transformed for home use and games play, with ability to run almost all software, applications and programs, including games that runs on Windows XP. Why Windows 2003 Server? According to the hacker of Tiny2003, Windows Server 2003 kernel outperforms Windows XP where it installs faster, boots faster, runs applications faster, manages programs better, never slows down even after days of using, and gives even better frame rates in games over Windows XP.

The latest version of Tiny2003 is named Windows Tiny2003 Rev01 R2 SP2 RC Unattended 3-in-1 Multi-Boot, where it contains CD of customized to be as close to Windows XP as possibe and unattended eXPerience Edition of Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise which allows you to choose from 3 options upon boot up:

The main feature of Windows Tiny2003 or Windows Server 2003 eXperience edition is that Internet Explorer, Outlook Express and Windows Media Player 11 have been removed and replaced with Mozilla Firefox v2.0.0.1, Thunderbird v1.5.0.9 and as an option install for WMP11. To make the Windows Tiny2003 tiny, small, slim and fast, a lot of useless, unwanted and not necessary components have been removed or uninstalled (see page 2 for list of removed components). So Windows Tiny2003 eXperience edition has the Windows folder which is only 480MB in size.

Download O-Demonoid.com-O_Windows_Tiny2003_Rev01_eXPerience.torrent (alternative download link) to download Tiny2003.Rev01.7z by using BT client such as BitComet which contains the ISO to burn to CD.

SHA-512 Checksum for Tiny2003.Rev01.7z with file size of 620 MB (650,480,650 bytes):

b11be253ef2235d9c7fac95fc4b8967a
e979f41d1c76efde0b200b3dae498a7d
6b8842a11021d2a48940dd3dceecc4cc
d5d29e23914019f401f8cef2ec11572c

Once extracted, you will get a CD ISO image with the file size of 667 MB (699,832,320 bytes). Burn the ISO image to a CD and install Windows Tiny2003 on a freshly formatted partition or hard drive only. Inside this ISO, there is an option in Extra folder to create Tiny2003 BARE ISO which contains only bare ISO file of Tiny2003 that is only 215Mb, with no option to boot
into Acronis, does not install any programs apart from Firefox web browser, and does not contain any of the files in the EXTRA folder or any driver packs. If you prefer this smaller size of ISO, you can also directly download Windows Tiny2003 R2 Vista Edition SP2 Unattended CD (Windows-Tiny2003-R2-SP2-RC-Unattended-Vista-Edition-eXPerience.iso) which is only 323MB in size. Although not as slim as latest version (IE7 and WMP11 are left intact), but it’s a smaller download. Download the BT torrent here.

Hmm., without testing I can only offer that anyone wishing to speed up XP can do many tweaks on their own, turning off useless services and removing components, bells and whistles and STILL keep much of the useful functionality of a full install OS.
I typically do almost all of the listed tweaks on my business and personal user clients machines as a matter of course, whether they are gamers or not (most are not and none are “serious gamers”., haha., that cracks me up., using the word serious with the term gamer., LOL).,
Basically I just install a full XP Pro version and then turn everything off that is not necessary (and there is a lot) and no one really notices., except that response and speed increases WITHOUT any apparent loss of usability.

Installed it on a PIII 650MHz with 384MB RAM and a GeForce FX5200 and it worked perfectly. Tiny2003 is more snappy on the old machine than XP64 on my dual core gaming rig, and that’s including using the Vista transparent windows theme. Installed video and wireless card drivers with no problems.

Thank you to the Tiny2003 people. You have proven that even Microsoft’s software is much improved in an “open source” environment. Windows would not be so scrutinized if they would follow that advice.

if anyone needs all of these extras, then teh answer is simple, install the full version (that would work.)

Anyways, the tiny xp works for what it was designed to do. i use it as an alternate boot os incase the primary os crashes, and one day it will crash. look on the bright side, you’ll already have a 2G partition on your hard drive to reinstall tiny and get access to your files before you reinstall everything.

Just a follow up, ‘cos I managed to install my keyboard layout:
In system32 all layoutfiles exists, so I simply removed kbdus.dll, then I renamed the one I wanted, kbdno.dll, to kbdus.dll. Restarted and my keys worked like a charm!
Guess this would work for the most basic languages?
If you don’t know what dll you should use, take a look here: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/keyboard.htm

Still miss remote desktop and/or terminal server though.. VNC works great, but i’d rather use the built-in function.

    2) Remote desktop is not available

    3) WmWare server is not working correctly (constant log filling with error)

    3) WmWare Workstation is not working at all

    4) MS Virtual PC is not running correctly

    5) National language support is missing…this is something that should stay!

I’ve been running this thing for a week or 2 now, loving it so far. No major problems or gripes, but finding an antivirus was kind of a pain, they should make sygate firewall optional. Installing Logitech setpoint was a pain, I had to set the compatibility mode to XP to get the installer to run. Also some webcam driver issues. File transfer in Yahoo messenger won’t work. Can’t seem to get Nvidia monitor option on right click desktop menu. Mysterious folders appeared on C drive, looks full of drivers or something.

Athlon X2 4200, 2×512Twinx, 7900 GT KO 512..Very very fast, especially when switching from full screen games to desktop and back. Could be a lot faster but I have it looking all pretty with Vista theme, eventually I’ll get bored of it.

Lots of fun extras on the CD but no AV? Unattended install works fine, but some kind of progress indicator would be nice, and the thing takes an inordinate amount of time when installing flash player. I’ve done 2 installs with this on 2 computers and it’s working great.

Very nice to not have to look for (most) drivers and codecs. This is for gaming, not server stuff, so if you are gonna miss those components, don’t try and a server with this.

This is a great thing, but some issues stand out.

    1. You shouldn’t have taken out ipx-spx. Some games DO still use this.
    2. My Documents folder are being used by certain games for per-profile configuration, so access to this should still be retained.
    3. There are people who still prefer to use automount, so an option to enable this or not should be given. Especially when they do use deep freeze to protect their gaming rig, and when the pc also doubles as internet cafe PCs where people use flashdrives to save stuff from the internet. Rooting a deep-frozen pc is pretty much pointless.
    4. There are times when acceleration levels revert to normal during graphics card corruption. (might be game issue though)
    5. It would be preferable if the user can enter his name/username (while keeping the OEM info to yourself)

That’s all for now. Other than me hunting for a deep freeze server edition, this implementation is heaven-sent.

You can get almost every game to run.
Use the vbs script in the tools folder to deal with msi installers….
    Go on test this…
It will piss on a fresh install of xp …unless it’s one of experiences versions of xp.

It does detect external HDD the way a server
    OS should :
by not automounting it just because someone inserts it .
If you want everybody to be able to automount
    their storage-devices do this :
    “Start/run/mountvol.exe /E” hit enter and reboot .
Now any punk with a flashdrive can root your machine .

Yes, some services have been removed, that’s kinda the whole point. IF you read the f****ng
manual that should hardly come as a surprise .
That is why “parts of the 2003 base have not been added, not even to the registry”.
What would be the point in removing something and then add it again ?
    Peter, you are contradicting yourself.
    how is a 3% increase ” NO gain ” ?

  23. Carlos
    February 14th, 2007 22:44
    3

Also you should mention that it does have some problems.

For example, it doesn’t detect plugged in external harddrives the way it should.
A lot of services have been disabled, and parts of the 2003 base simply have not been added, not even written in the registry, so you’re gonna miss those if you accidently need them. And believe me, you WILL bump into missing parts soon enough.

There are ways to install them afterwards, but it will suddenly be like using Linux: Pretty hard, sometimes it will take weeks to find a solution to your problem.

    hi,

ok instead of repeating everything the author claim for his modifications…..
has anybody BENCHMARKED this version against a FRESH installed XP?

i once have installed a mod 2003 server that should be “ligthning fast blah blah….”

only to notice that 2 out of 10 games would not run and there was NO speed gain. (ok futurmark showed 3% more points).

my test was on a amd x2 4000, 2GB ram, geforce 7900 GTX.

im curious if this one is better. but im not going to test it again.
