Google Phone (or GPhone) in the Making?
It seems like it’s not only Apple that is preparing to grab a pie in the mobile phone gadget market, with its highly anticipated iPhone, rumored to be officially announced during MacWorld conference in January 2007, but Google has also set its sight on the lucrative PDA phone gadget market. Reports has surfaced that stating Google is in discussion with Orange, a mobile service provider/operator in UK, to design and create a Google branded phone which will make usage of Internet in mobile phone as easy and as natural as in desktop computers and laptops.
According to Guardian, the Google Phone or Gphone will be a smart phone or personal digital data assistant (PDA) powered with Windows Mobile and manufactured by HTC, the leading Taiwanese firm in creating smartphones and Windows Mobiles. Other than branded Google, the Orange’s logo may be imprinted too, with LCD screen similar to those of video iPod. What really matters is that the Gphone will have built-in Google software or G-apps which would dramatically improve on the slow and cumbersome experience of surfing the web from a mobile handset. The Google apps that may be integrated into the GPhone include location-based web search with GPS functionality, Google Maps, Google Earth, Gmail, mobile search, and even ability to stream Youtube video contents smoothly to the mobile phone.
The Google phone will surely benefit to those who like to always have Google in their hand no matter where they’re or when on the move. However, this Google mobile phone may not seen the light on retail market before 2008.

[...] After all the buzz around Apple iPhone, news have leaked further information, and pictures and photos of Google Switch smartphone from Samsung which is said to be one of the rumored and highly anticipated GPhone or Googlephone. Unlike previous speculation, Google Switch Googlephone is a collaboration with Samsung, instead of HTC or Alpha Networks. Google Switch comes with a few unique features and new concept, among all, with no internal storage on phone, and of course, plenty of Google software on the phone to make your life easier. The main feature of Google Switch is the smartphone will have no on-board storage, which mean Google Switch users will need to download everything they need over the network, including all the applications or new apps that are served and installed over the network by attaching the new program to your account via web interface. Apparently, the mobile device is also a button-less touchscreen PDA, and according to Engadget, comes with GPS built-in for pinpoint navigation around Google Maps, while contact manager is an extended version of Gtalk combining Gmail, text and instant messaging. [...] Google komt met een nieuw linux-gebaseerd Operating System voor mobiele telefonie. Het systeem gaat onder de naam Android en zal de belangrijkste applicaties van Google, zoals Gmail, Calendar, Talk Docs en een speciale versie van Google Maps bevatten die met de ingebouwde GPS kan samenwerken. Google’s OS is toepasbaar op iedere gsm en maakt dat elke gsm kan omgetoverd worden tot een Gphone of Google phone. Hiermee wil Google haar advertising markt van online search uitbreiden naar mobile search. Het gloednieuwe Open Source systeem van Google zal in het eerste kwartaal van 2008 op de markt verschijnen.In tegenstelling tot momenteel bestaande Operating Systems zal Google de gebruikers van de Gphone een gratis abonnement aanbieden. Google wil net zoals bij ‘Google search’ de inkomsten halen uit (mobiele) advertenties wat maakt dat bellen en andere telecommunicatie volledig gratis wordt. Google wil namelijk geld verdienen door advertenties te koppelen aan applicaties die op de telefoon draaien. Doordat de advertenties exact gepersonaliseerd kunnen worden, zijn deze meer gericht en beter van kwaliteit als standaard advertenties. Door de kracht van Linux Open Source zal de Google phone echter geen intern geheugen bevatten maar alle applicaties rechtstreeks en gratis downloaden.Op zich heeft Google weinig interesse in de hardwarematige kant van de mobiele telefonie. Het gaat Google er vooral om een voet in de markt te krijgen van mobiele advertenties en zo buiten de sporen van het wereld weide web te treden. Het gaat Google er dus niet om te kunnen concurreren met de recent uitgebrachte Iphone van Apple maar eerder met de 100 dollar-laptop van het OLPC-project.Voorspellingen geven aan dat tegen eind 2008 Google 2% van de mobiele markt zal veroverd hebben. Of Google hierin ook daadwerkelijk zal slagen is nog de vraag. Google heeft wel het sterk concurrentiele voordeel van reeds bestaande adverteerders, maar ze komen stilaan meer en meer in het vaarwater van andere grote industrieën. De grootste moeilijkheid zal er in bestaan om partnerships te blijven vinden. Momenteel blijkt het Google allemaal nog aardig te lukken gezien de recent opgedoken partners waarmee het samenwerkt.
