Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391) Released
As mentioned previously that Microsoft intends to roll out and install a new validation update on Windows Vista via Windows Update, Microsoft is indeed very fast and has started to release Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391) via not only Windows Update or Microsoft Update, but also through Automatic Updates feature of Windows Vista, in the category of Critical Updates. So if you enable Automatic Updates to automatically download and install all critical updates for you, the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation update would have been installed, and will most likely validated and detected your copy of Windows Vista is not genuine, if you using known activation workarounds of ‘frankenbuild’ activated Vista system or spoofed KMS server.
If you’re using pirated Windows Vista that has been hacked or cracked or bypassed activation, this update will detect that the Vista is not genuine, and de-activate or un-activate any ‘activation’ been done. You will get a warning message of “Windows Validation: Your copy of windows is not valid, Windows vista will be running in limited mode with less features.” The Windows Vista will also lose some nice features with Windows Aero disabled, so do the Aero theme, and the user is required to activate the Windows Vista again within 30 days grace period (some users reported they only have 3 days!)
If the update hasn’t been installed, you can see the details of the update in Automatic Updates (after download) or Windows (Microsoft) Updates site. It will show:
Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391)
The download size is 103 KB and it’s a critical update. This update provides the latest information to the Windows Vista validation components. It also points to this link for further information.
There is no need to try to using System Restore to go back to previous state of Windows Vista before this update is installed, because once KB 929391 validation update is installed, it’s sort of permanent. Unless you have a ghost image of Vista before the update is been installed, and can use the image to recover back to original system state. So the other solution (or precaution) is not to install this update. Disable Automatic Updates, or select the options up to automatically download updates only. You can hide this update when it shows up in Automatic Updates by choosing custom install. Never select automatic install if you unsure of what is going to be installed on your computer.
Note that this update will only be released to certain kind of ‘patched’ Windows Vista, especially the so called ‘frankenbuild’ Windows Vista which is activated by using RC build files and RC1 or RC2 product key. The KMS activated Vista will be validated as non-genuine too according to some reports, but these reports also claim that once reboot, the Windows Vista is back to permanently activated normal state.
There are now ways to remove and uninstall KB929391 Windows Vista WGA Validation Update.

[...] Workaround to bypass Windows Vista activation process has been automated with a small utility TimeStop.exe that claims to support crack on 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate activation. However, if you prefer to do the dirty work yourself, by installing and applying the TimerStop Vista activation countdown timer stopper manually. To recall, TimerStop.sys is a program that runs as a service in your Windows Vista which will terminate and break activation grace period left countdown timer so that it will always stay at 43200 minutes left, or reset back to this duration after reboot, which is treated by Microsoft as within trial period. There is now new Timer Stopper crack for Windows Vista RTM release, which claimed to be from Dr. Hisham – CORE (acronym for Challenge Of Reverse Engineering). The main different is that the new and updated TimerStop.sys claims to be able to work properly to crack activation timer on Windows Vista x64 (64-bit edition), including on Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, if you follow the steps exactly and correctly. It works by either stop the countdown timer altogether even when you using the Vista system, or reset the trial period left to 43200 minutes after every reboot of PC. Best thing with this method of crack is that Microsoft will treat it always as just installed as trial or evaluation system, so you will not be subjected to WGA validation (yet) and thus can access and download Windows Update properly. [...] The hack to use Windows Vista KMS activation method, including running a local KMS as a workaround to bypass and crack Windows Vista activation is one of the most reliable, popular and nearly perfect crack method with higher chance of success and minimal failure rate against any Windows Vista validation. Hackers have released a streamlined, downsized and miniature version of mini KMS server virtual machine or VMWare appliance image where the download size is only about 300 MB, compared with 1.5 GB of Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Local.Activation.Server-MelindaGates VMWare image. The main advantage and benefit of the mini KMS server is the minimal consumption of system resources such as memory and hard disk space, thus enable the KMS service to be ran at a machine with lower system specifications. So you can keep this KMS virtual image and boot it in any VMWare virtual machine as and when activation or reactivation is required. [...]

[...] Windows Vista Validation Update (KB929391) has just been released and deployed to Vista computer that are what called by Microsoft as ‘frankenbuild” system that use the workaround of mixing files from RC and RTM build to activate the Windows Vista. As there is no official retail or OEM version of Windows Vista on sale in market yet, so practically all Vista installation by personal or home users is likely to be activated with pirate or crack methods. Your Vista will be de-activated after this update and with Aero feature disabled. Unactivated Windows Vista will go into reduced functionality mode once the activation grace period expired, where Vista will provide only limited usablity. So if you want to continue using Windows Vista at least until theoretical expiry date of RC1 or RC2 product key in mid 2007, there a few methods that you can try. [...]
