View, Edit and Convert Canon EOS 400D (Digital Rebel XTi) RAW Images in RawShooter

RawShooter is a popular digital camera RAW workflow software from pixmantec (now acquired by Adobe) which allows digital photographes to efficiently download, browse, view, prioritize, compare, edit, correct and convert large batches of digital camera RAW image files. However, currently RawShooter still doesn’t support .CR2 RAW photos from recently released Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi. If you’re the photographer who owns a Canon EOS 400D or DR XTi, the following hack or trick is a workaround and solution to use the .CR2 RAW from 400D/XTi in RawShooter.

  1. Download the free Adobe DNG Converter 3.6, available for Windows and Mac OS X.
  2. Install Adobe DNG Converter 3.6.
  3. Convert the RAW image files from Canon XTi or 400D in .CR2 format to .DNG (Adobe Digital Negative Specification)
  4. Download any Hex editor.
  5. Navigate to RawShooter installation folder, usually inside Program Files folder.
  6. Make a backup copy of RawShooter.exe.
  7. Open the RawShooter.exe in any Hex editor.
  8. Search, find and replace each and every instance of ‘350D’ with ‘400D’ (there should be 5 of them).
  9. Save the file. Check that the cracked RawShooter.exe has exactly the same number of bytes as the original RawShooter.exe (or its backup).
  10. Run the RawShooter.exe and open the .DNG files converted from Canon EOS 400D Digital Rebel XTi.

If you use this hack to crack RawShooter.exe, it will cause RawShooter unable to open or edit files from a Canon EOS 350D (Digital Rebel XT) instaed. In this cause, just replace back the RawShooter.exe to the original state by using the backup executable to restore support of Canon EOS 350D Digital or EOS Digital Rebel XT.

    What version of raw shooter did you use for this crack? I have version 1.0.3 b77 and it doesn’t seem to work with it.

    It does not work for me as well. Rawshooter cannot see converted dng files….

    Tried Rawshooter versions 1.2.1.72, 1.2.0.68, 1.0.3.77 for my 400D and so far no luck. Anyone know which version works for the 400D?

    Sofar no luck tweaking

    Various hex editors were all unable to find “350D” search string in rawshooter.exe.

    Any trick I should be aware of?

    Worked for me :)

    But here is what I figured out after a few test runs. And I’m not sure if all of this matters:

    - Rawshooter Essential v1.2.0 build 68
    - Adobe DNG Camera Raw 3.6
    - Canon Rebel XTi (US model)

    I converted the .CR2 files to linear DNG (setting in the DNG converter) and used a hex editor to replace REBEL XT with REBEL XTi in RawShooter.exe. There is a white space after the XT where you put the “i”.

    RawShooter can now read the DNG, but any CR2 will come up unviewable.
