New Microsoft Office 2007 File Formats and Extensions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint Files
2007 Microsoft Office Systems business productivity suite will have new file formats for the documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that the Office components Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007 created. One of the major change to Office documents file formats is that
Microsoft Office use Office Open XML Formats as the default format to save and store documents for Microsoft Office Word 2007, Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007, although Office 2007 files is backward compatible to Microsoft Office 2000, Office XP and Office 2003 using Office 2007 Compatibility Mode.
To reflect the changes to XML-based technology used in the documents and files by Office 2007, Microsoft also make another major change on the naming convention of file extensions of the Word 2007 documents, Excel 2007 spreadsheets and PowerPoint 2007 presentations created. The file extensions of Office 2007 will have more than 3 characters instead of usual popularly used 3-character extensions .doc, .xls and .ppt. The main extensions for Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in Office 2007 will be .docx, xlsx and .pptx. The full supported file formats and file extensions by various popular component programs in Microsoft Office 2007 are as below.

- PowerPoint Macro-enabled Presentation (.pptm) *
- PowerPoint Slide Show (.ppsx) *
- PowerPoint Macro-enabled Slide Show (.ppsm) *
- PowerPoint Template (.potx) *
- PowerPoint Macro-enabled Presentation Template (.potm) *

Note: Only file formats with * is backward compatible down to Office 2000.
Office 2007 also support natively the features to save and export to PDF and XPS, where PDF is popular documents sharing format, and XPS is format that supports advanced digital rights management for secure document managements, PDF export will not support rights management.

[...] Microsoft Office 2007 (or 2007 Office System) uses a new XML based file formats and extensions for new documents, workbooks, spreadsheets or presentations that been created by Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 2007. These new file formats (in .docx, .xclx and .pptx extensions) are not backward-compatible, meaning older version of Office suites such as Office 2003, Office XP and Office 2000 cannot open and read the XML files. And by default, Office 2007 will save the document, workbook or presentation as new XML file format, which cannot be immediately opened or viewed or edited by users with earlier version of Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint. To solve the compatibility issues of new XML based Office files between various version of Office 2007, 2003 and 2002 (XP), Microsoft has released Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, which when installed on the computers of users using Microsoft Office 2003 or Office XP (2002), will allow them to open, edit and save documents in the new 2007 XML formats.
