Muslims Offended by Apple Store
Here’s an interesting research report that says the 5th Ave Apple Store is offensive to some Muslims. Why? Apparently the glass cube shape of the Apple Store entrance resembles the Ka’ba in Mecca. The report, which was translated by The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), also finds problems in people referring to the glass cube as the “Apple Mecca,” the store being open 24 hours a day like the Ka’ba, and because “alcoholic beverages” are served inside at a bar.
Obviously the offended Muslims in question have never actually been to the 5th Ave Apple Store. The only bar in the Apple Store is the Genius Bar and although the advice of a Genius Bar employee may be intoxicating, it isn’t alcoholic. For those of you unfamiliar with the Apple Genius Bar, it’s a booth inside the Apple Store where you can bring your broken iPod or computer and have them take a look at it. There are no alcoholic drinks served at the Genius Bar, just knowledge. The purpose of the Genius Bar must have gotten lost in translation. For the record, Apple Stores do not serve alcohol. People getting drunk and playing with expensive computers and iPods probably isn’t a good idea.
As far as building a cube shaped store entrance that’s open 24 hours a day…. Apple’s 100% guilty of doing that. But can a simple glass cube really be blasphemous? Please write a comment below and share your thoughts.

This was a misinterpretation..
Muslims thought that it was going to be a bar and the owners were naming it after a holy place.. Makkah. And seeing that it was built into the shape of a kabah made them believe that it was offending their religion.

If the name Mecca or Ka’ba only belong to stupid moslem, why they do not apply for a trademark for the name. So any other attempt to use that name will have a copyright infringement.
Like Microsoft once do to the word Windows.
But I think moslem are too stupid to do that. They better blast a hotel or a tourist place with a suicide bomb.

Salam,
First of all, no educated Muslim will be offended by a cubical structure. Like someone else said, Islam doesn’t have a patent to cubed architectural structures, loool!
Secondly, westerners have long used the word “mecca” to describe any place where many people come to. I can understand a problem with this…as it is an politically incorrect use of the word and may offend Muslims.
Thirdly, people need to stop being so sensitive and act like they are always victims. If you are offended by Apple’s NY store, I assume you have a very strong faith. If this is the case, you should be busy with other things intead of this nonsense.
Lastly, what the heck are people saying about a ‘bar’? looool. There is no bar! Expensive computers/ipods and alcohol isn’t a good mixture. And if there were a bar…so what?

This is Adnan and i am Muslim as well, i am not in NY not even in USA so first need to confirm that is this place working as Bar, if it is i reuest you all, why not use this extra ordinary design for any other purpose.
If it hurting any human, please take some time to rethink and don’t give blames to anyone.
Solution: if this place is a bar, should be used for anyother usage, because alcohal is not allowed even in our religion, where as this building look like the most important religious building, and already created confusion in our minds, so why not using the building for other purposes, like for some office.
Please dont use for abuse.

First of all, all these Muslims being offended by this need to check the reality of the facts before they speak up and make idiotic clames (or even worst – riots about it in remote area like Kashmir).
Remember many published authentic hadith about the matter based on which fiqh rulings is derived:
1. Order to verify the fact before transmitting it. If you don’t verify it, you will be responsible for slandering of other party.
This is a cube shaped retail and tech support store that has nothing to do with Kabba. Therefore, there is no issue with any of this and nobody is to blame for it as they are doing nothing wrong. It is a new century and the location and the shape of the structure perfectly fit the environment around it. There should be no offense to anyone. Please leave this matter alone and move on with your life. There is more important things you have to do with your time.
- Have you memorized last Juzz?
- Have you understood different teachings of aqeeda’s and figure out the correct one.
- Have you understood all potential flavors of shirk and way to protect yourself from it.
- Have you understood the fundamentals of fiqh and science of hadith
- Have you worked on your Ahlaq
- Have you worked on fixing your heart
- When was the last time you prayed Tahajjud, stayed reading Quran after Fajr, attended scholars speech (halaqa) between Maghrib and Isha in the mosque.
I guarantee you once you complete the list above you will have no time to discuss such non-sense as issue of Apple’s store in NY.

This is really a STUPID act “made by apple”..
Muslims are not offended by this strange construction because it looks like makkah, the offense is that they called it “Makkah”.
Makkah is a very sacred and special place to Muslims, so apple will do good by keeping it’s stupid-looking cube but they have no god damn right to use the name makkah.
I just wonder how can the people at apple be so genius to design a Mac, and at the same time so STUPID to fall into very small, shallow, narrow-minded act of just wanting to offence Muslims by using the name of their sacred place.

Its all about how people interpret ideas thoughts or works that have already been made. The Ka’ba as the muslim scriptures and history tells was completed by their last prophet. Hi, I agree 100% with Aisha (31st Oct 2006) – not only the name John, I think even the colour should be changed – Apple is anyways well known for the colour white, rather than black – why give anyone a chance to point out and claim that it looks like the Kaaba? imagine making a public bathroom or a butchery shop that looks like a church or just has a cross on it’s roof! and then ppl blame Muslims for bringing down the twin towers and get the excuse to bomb n blast their countries… with such acts of ignorance and insensitivity towards Islam by the Americans, what do you expect from Muslims, a box of chocolates??? and besides, what is so amazingly cool for Apple about a cube in black anyways? it’s just another pinch for a Muslim, that’s all.

The NYC Apple Store closely resembles the Kaaba? No, the apple store closely resembles a three dimentional geometric shape knowned widely as a cube. So do the Kaaba. As far as I know, cubes have been around longer than the Muslim faith. I just wish more people could be more open minded about their faiths instead of being offended by the slightest thing.

I am amazed at the numerous ways AllAh (creator and sustainer of the Universe) is getting people to respond to Islam. In the seventies the word Mecca was often used to describe a trading place worth visiting (Car mecca) a mecca for tourists etc and no muslim once took offence (to my knowledge), the focus today has changed drastically (since khomeini and all the post Khomieni events is creating awareness of Islam, and now the Apple Store is bringing attention to Islam. The result millions have accepted Islam.

While i think getting offended by the Apple store is quite silly,..i also think that making a mockery of sentiments is nasty, on ure part.
what i fail to understand is why the muslims have to be provoked to such a drastic extent. why did it have to be called Apple Mecca? the english language has a fair amount of substitutes. i would think that the Apple people wud be slightly more sensible and a lot more careful.
quite frankly, i think its the worst form of ignorance on part of people with opinion like urs that they cant understand a basic tenant of one of the most significant religions of present: respect! respect for the Prophet PBUH, respect for Allah’s Home and the Sacred MAsjid-e-Haraam and respect in general for the Quran and its teachings. ideally this respect is to be extended to all humanity, its one of the basic Islamic properties. while many muslims fail to acknowledge this last aspect, i dont think the rest of the world was given license to insult our practices. as far as im concerned, all religions have facets which make it complicated for people to understand and appreciate. i dont find it cool to be worshipping stone or fire, or to not shower for a year and then go take a holy bath in a place that stinks up cuz of rotting corpses. but i wont say it, at least not beyond what ive forced myself to say already because i dont know any better. thats, as mum taught me, when i “shut up” and concentrate on myself rather than ridicule anyone else.
westerners, increasingly, however seem to have the passport to disrespecting islam, its either cool or what they may name crusades against a ‘terrorist’ religion,…but for me, its uncalled for. not justifiable, and outrite unfair.
i dont think Apple Mecca should be burned down. certainly not. but some crazed muslim youth who is sick of the insults, of religious thrashing, of hate-crimes, of political animosity just might. i will not justify his/her actions. never. because no matter what anyone says,…i trust what my Book says. i trust that my religion teaches peace and harmony. This is just really ridiculous but you will always find people complaining about stuff. Sure you could say “oh Muslims are always complaining about everything (because they aren’t allowed to have sex or to jack off and they are living in sand pits so it’s Friday evening and you can’t either have sex or jack off and then you will also have sand in your ass crack)” but of course that’s not the case. There are always people who will complain about little things and then others will tell them “oh you are right”. I am just thinking about the design Burger King once had for an ice cream cone poster or some paper the cone was wrapped into. It had some weird waves on it and some British Muslim claimed one of the waves looked like the word “Allah” in Arabian and he complained about it. Since Burger King didn’t want to offend Muslim people they changed the design. I don’t think the designers are to blame and Burger King should have had the balls to say “no we won’t change it” but of course they want to be seen as an user friendly company but if you are really complaining about such a thing you are a retard and probably won’t even eat at Burger King just like the people have never been to fifth avenue- I think in those cases the people who are complaining hate America and will never go there and so they will pick up ANYTHING so that they can complain about it- nobody should bother.
