Copy or Transfer Music and Songs from iPod to PC and Computer without iTunes
To protect the copyrights of the songs, musics and videos stored on iPod and reduce piracy, Apple has make it difficult to copy or transfer the songs, musics, audio, videos and files that stored on iPod to personal computer (PC) or laptop notebook computer, by scrambling the file names of the songs on the iPod and telling the operating system that the files should be invisible to normal users, without any encryption involved in this iPod anti-copying mechanism.
iTunes allows only one-way synchronization of musics from computer to iPod, so if for whatever reasons such as need to reload your library on local hard disk due to desktop hard disk failure or buying new computer, you can easily copy back the video, music and song library from iPod on a Windows PC by following steps:
- Insert your iPod to a Windows PC USB or FireWire port. (PC should runs Windows XP or other Windows operating system).
- If your Windows PC still doesn’t have iTunes installed, skip this step. If iTunes is already installed and prompt a message on whether if you’d like to associate this iPod with this computer and deleting its content, click No. Or else you will lose your only copy of library on iTunes. Beside, ensure that ‘Enable Disk Use’ is selected.
- Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, the iPod should be automatically detected as a portable hard drive.
- Click on the iPod icon or the iPod portable hard drive letter to open the contents of the drive.
- If you don’t see a folder called “iPod Control”, it’s hidden and invisible. To unhidden it so that it’s visible, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View, and then check (enable) the option “Show hidden files and folders.”
- Open the “iPod Control” folder, and then the Music folder.
- The Music folder contains the iPod’s music and videos, divided into folders. Copy the library to local computer hard drive’s My Music folder.
- The files copied have unintelligible four-letter file names. To reveal the names of the songs and other data tags, add the files to the Windows Media Player or iTunes libraries or switch to “Tiles” view in Windows Explorer.
- Rename the file if necessary.
Beside above manual ways to copy and transfer song library from iPod to computer, or import into iTunes, there are several third party program or more commonly called iPod Manager that has the iPod copying function such as SharePod (freeware) or PodPlus (shareware).
Similarly, in Macintosh running MacOS X or MacOS 9, it’s harder to show hidden files and folders. So these third party utilities with iPod copying will be useful to transfer files and music from iPod to PC’s hard disk and iTunes library.
For MacOS X, try Broken Helix and Rob’s iPod Exporter. For MacOS 9, try escapePod and iProber. Other iPod Manager or iPod song transfer utility for Mac include Senuti, iPodRid, iPod.iTunes and PodWorks. For Linux, try GUIPod. PodUtil will be able to works on both Windows and Mac platform.
The transferred music will be playable without any restrictions if the songs are ripped from CDs. If the songs or videos are bought from the iTunes music store, they will play in iTunes after you have “authorize” the computer. To authorize, try playing a purchased file. It will prompt you for your iTunes username and password. Up to five computers can be authorized at any one time.

November 4th, 2009 12:07
This does not work. I have ipod connected, and folder options are set to ’show hidden files and folders’ but the folders (calendars, contacts, ipod_control, photos) do not exist on my ipod. yes I have a lot of music on my ipod and it works just fine, but the folders you are talking about are not there.
November 1st, 2009 09:16
I’m running windows 7 and just did this. It worked and the files were transferred, but I can’t get the real file names (songs/artists) to show up even after switching to tiles view. I’m also having trouble transferring the folder to itunes. Anybody else having these problems?
October 31st, 2009 03:27

Awesome!!! thanks….
September 28th, 2009 18:27
You have saved my musical LIFE! My xternal h’drive died on me. This was soooooooooo easy!!! For those having probs…..just click on ‘my computer’ then choose your Ipod then ‘organise’ then ‘folder and search options’ then ‘view’ look down to where it says “Hidden files and Folders” and make sure you have “Show hidden files and folders” ticked.
Then click OK and go back to your Ipod window and it should have “Ipod control”.
September 28th, 2009 06:07
This way might take a while, if you have itunes you kinda need it, i dont know but go to computer/my computer and click on your ipod icon thing. Go to your search box and search a,b,c,etc. every letter of the alphabet and each letter there should be something with an itunes music icon and it has 4 letter names and if you double click on those it plays the song and tells you the name on the song player. =DDDDD
September 25th, 2009 09:53
Excuse me…..i cannot find tools after i click the ipod icon…can somebody please help me out??

SOLUTIONS TO SOME PROBLEMS ON VISTA
thanks, i couldn’t get it to work at first, but i found if you leave the option up when you first plug in your ipod, and itunes asks if you want to transfer music lib, just keep that window up, don’t answer it yet, and then bring up my computer and the ipod is there,
and i was also having trouble finding TOOLs, so i typed “folder options” into the start search when you click the four colored Windows logo in bottom left, it brings up that menu at the top of this box, the rest is pretty much taken care of
September 3rd, 2009 19:54
ALternatively, if you cannot find the ‘tools’ option, it’s easy to search for the folder ‘ipod control’ and select the option to show hidden files and folders and it should come up.
This is brilliant, thankyou so much!
September 3rd, 2009 11:55
Thank you very very much! it worked perfectly!
September 1st, 2009 08:07
For those of you who can’t find the “tools” button:
Go to start -> control panel -> Classic view -> Folder options. Then you can go to show hidden files. Hope this helps the vista users!
September 1st, 2009 01:41

August 31st, 2009 02:16
THANK YOUU!!!!!!!!!!!! you surely are the best! <3
August 30th, 2009 08:53
THANK YOU SOO MUCH!
and guys, if it doesnt show up after you enable the “show hidden files” thingie, just unplug it and replug it. if itunes pops up tho, it automatically closes my computer.
so to fix that, open itunes and have your ipod in, then under your ipod “summary” it has like four check boxes, and one is automatically open itunes when ipod is connected. just uncheck that and click apply or whatever the button is.
again thank you soooo much
August 27th, 2009 14:30

August 16th, 2009 07:17
I did everything up here and it worked pretty good, ive got all the songs (tons) into the “my music” folder the only problem is my Itunes will not put these songs into my itunes library for some stupid reason… i have tried everything. Anyone have an ideas?
August 15th, 2009 10:44
I was extremely frustrated at not being able to import songs they were not originally purcahsed from iTunes store off my iPod. All the instructions I found said I had to go back to my original computer and change some setting and re-sync. Well that’s great, except the reason I need to resync with a new computer is my old one died. I finally found MediaWidget and it imported everything off my iPod into iTunes. Brilliant. Why doesn’t Apple have this functionality in iTunes already. So annoying. (PS I have a iPod Nano current version 2009 and am using Windows Vista)
August 15th, 2009 07:28

May 4th, 2009 21:35
Ok im new. I got a new computer and I used it to rename cryptic 4 letter words songs in ipod control to original songs on my ipod nano. I’d done this before on my old computer and they still worked. Now I did it on my new computer and the renamed songs stopped working. I renamed another one and it stopped working. Then I renamed it back to the original four letter file name and it worked on my ipod again. Great. Now I wish I knew how to change the renamed filenames back to their old four letter names. I tried properties n resests, Itunes, restore, the whole nine yards I got nothing. The only way to make it work again is by changng it back to the original cryptic 4 letter word. PLz help.

Hi. I’m trying to upload my iPod content to a media player on a website. Is there an EASIER way of doing this without using Zip files.? Isn’t there some kinda drag n drop program somewhere on this internet that would allow me to do this.? If not, WHY not.?!!?

I forgot to say that The iPod doesn’t show up on the computer at all unless I enter the passcode, which I can’t…
April 23rd, 2009 08:09
I got a new hard drive, and the only place my music is backed up is my ipod.
The iPod randomly stopped working, and got stuck on a screen that has the USB cable pointing to the itunes icon, and telling you to connect to iTunes.
I connected it, and iTunes says that it can’t use the iPod until I enter the passcode (when you turn it) into the iPod, and i can’t do even that because it’s stuck on the screen that says to connect to iTunes.
That means I can’t use any software, or even this method to get the 2500 songs I have on my iPod.
Help!!! Thanks!

Good Stuff! Worked perfect! Thanks.
February 2nd, 2009 04:05
Great info, but one critical bit was missing. I had to “unhide” the folders before iTunes would import them. First I unhid them one at a time (right mouse button, properties, unchecked “Hide Folder”). Then I figured out that I could hide and then unhide the “iTunes Music” folder and everything in it in order to unhide these folders.
January 27th, 2009 09:41
it worked all the way up to the part where i had to imort it onto iTunes.
im still trying to figure that out
January 18th, 2009 09:06
Worked perfectly! Thank you!
January 16th, 2009 02:06
[...] CopyTrans can come to rescue, especially so if you don’t want to use the manual way to copy and transfer iPod and iPhone music and video to PC, as iTunes does not provide reverse-sync [...]
January 13th, 2009 04:03
Hi there. Just wanted to let you all know that you can go right on the apple website for instructions on how to do this. Since it is from apple, it is probably the safest way to go. I did it last night and it worked perfectly. You will get all of your songs, album covers, play counts, etc! The link is: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329
Good luck!!
January 11th, 2009 11:19
before i try this… does this also get your plays counts, ratings and artwork too?
January 11th, 2009 09:42
that was AWESOME! The instructions were easy to follow and it worked great!
thanks a bunch
January 9th, 2009 11:11

I HAVE VISTA!!!!!!
here’s what you do.
1.) after you plug in your iPod you click on my computer, look for your iPod in “devices with removable storage”.
2.) after u open that u click ‘organize’ in the top left hand corner’ for a drop down menu. then click on folder and search options.
3.)select the tab ‘view’ and in the advanced setting selections. select ’show hidden files and folders.’ click ok.
4.) then follow the same directions as above =)
p.s. if your just wanting to upload music from your iPod to your iTunes, just go through a long process of opening the folders, then ’selecting all’ of the files in the folder and dragging it into itunes music.
You’re my hero since noone else would post how to do this with vista. Thanks XD

December 14th, 2008 02:14
I’m slightly iPod challenged — but learning ! Is it possible to transfer from my Nano to an iPod Touch ?
December 9th, 2008 23:14
I did that and it worked well, but when I goto play my music on another player like Windows, there would onlybe a 4letter code for each song, like JKCH or something like that. Now I have thousands of songs with that code. Is there any software to decode these songs?
December 4th, 2008 21:48
Great!!! Thanks! It a good list you give!
I use CopyTrans and this app Rocks! It even copied my playlists, videos and artworks!!! you could include it!

I have an Ipod with a bunch of music. I am not sure what happened but my MacPro laptop’s itunes some how was empty one day??? as if I had never used it or loaded anything on it, my iPhoto did the same thing. My question is, How can I take all the songs from the iPod and reload them? I can reload all purchased songs from iTunes but I also have some music from CDs that I loaded. Is there a way to retrieve music from iPod and put it back on my laptop or on my new iMac?
Thanks

October 16th, 2008 00:13
now how do you put the music in to itunes? i am so confused.. and so tired, oh so tired..
October 14th, 2008 23:18
I have a question and also a comment for those that need it.
First I’ll give my comment. For those that are OCD about their music. Once you add these files to your itunes you can have itunes convert to mp3 (even if they are already mp3) and this will now add a copy of that file to your my music folder. This is what I did because I didnt want itunes to manage my music. After you do that you have to delet the original.
Now my question is this: After I added the folders to itunes some of the music still showed as WXYZ.mp3. I have found that some of the albums are missing a few songs and I sure they are in those that the names didnt come out. Is there anything I can do to get the actual song names? There is no information in the properties of these files.
October 12th, 2008 23:02
thank youso much, most of those programmes you can use only lets you upload like 100 songs,
p.s mike, its prob not coming up because youve ejected it on itunes.
what i did was got rid of itunes all together, uploaded the music and then put it back on.
October 10th, 2008 16:44

thank you so much.
and a big thank you to rahul and jo for the vista advice.
no prolems except the time it takes to click on every single song to open it.

thank yoouuu! xD
August 4th, 2008 00:08
Thank you so much. My external hard drive died this morning along with all my files. Nothing irreplaceable, but I would have died without my music.
Also if you have these songs on iTunes already, just double click and it will play with the real file name. (assuming iTunes is default media player)
August 2nd, 2008 21:45
I’ve used this method twice now and it has worked great both times
I did find that i had to plug my ipod into the back of my computer for it to show up in the my computer area not the front usb ports.
Thankyou!!

The hidden folders thing is just too complicated for girls
. I tried Sue-Ann’s. This software rocks! I just recuperated all my iPhone music back to my new laptop.
July 24th, 2008 16:29
JJ of course there is a faster way of syncing your ipod with any itunes library, than doing it manually.
I use CopyTrans http://www.copytrans.net/ and I really like it because it protects your ipod from unwanted itunes syncing. Besides, it copies your iPod songs to your computer or iTunes, playlists, ratings, play count, last played, album artworks, videos, movies, TV shows, audiobooks and podcasts (incl. subscriptions)
It imports all that to iTunes in their right order and categories. It’s just so easy with it. I’m sure you’ll like it to.
July 22nd, 2008 11:00
ur the best … its so easy and fast to transfer ur the man…COMPUTER GENIUS!!!!

July 20th, 2008 04:07
I have a comment on step 9. Once I added the folders to iTunes, they still had 4-letter names in my documents folder. I thought I’d have to rename them all myself but iTunes will reorganize them for you if you check the box in the advanced tab in preferences.
July 12th, 2008 06:39
my ipod drive will not show up when i go to my computer please help
July 12th, 2008 05:17

May 24th, 2008 16:08
Hey, I was just trying to figure out how to do this… There is also another way… which is really similar to this way.. Instead of un hidding the folder you can right click on the main folder, like when you find it in my computer and click search. Then click on music and search the letter “m” and it will show all of your music again in the un-readable format. I figured it out and then decied to search in on the internet wasnt really smart :s lol But this is great that it is alreay posted on the internet.
May 23rd, 2008 01:17
For Vista users, click organize, folder and search options, and then view. It will be under the hidden files and folders option.
May 20th, 2008 12:54

Hey, for some reason my ipod wont show up in my computer when connected. I already clicked the ’show hidden files or folders’ option, but still no luck. I tried plugging in my digital camera just to see if it comes up in my computer and it does. Does this mean something is wrong with my ipod? What should I do now?

I managed to back all my music to my PC as above but now when I tried to play music on my I-pod it says no music. Yet when I check on the computer the IPod shows 8GB of “other” which is the amount of music I backed up. Has something changed the format of the music on my IPod or why can mu IPod not see the music that remains there?
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul.
February 28th, 2008 06:58
Thank you thank you thank you….I have been searching soooo long and your method was so easy I really really really grateful! XXXX
February 27th, 2008 21:50
it works with iPod clasic, the thing is like u said the album titles have all got 4 letter names, and u have to go throught ht e whole list renaming them.
good thing in tile mode the details are still thre, it makes it a wee bit easier to rename, god that would take saoo long if u have 80gb of music like me
February 27th, 2008 13:40
for windows vista users, to get to hidden folders for the ipod:
organize > layout > menu bar (must be checked)
from there you can opt for all hidden folders to be shown from the tools option!
February 27th, 2008 00:13
To get to the hidden “ipod control” folder you have to press ALT. It will show the task bar that is also hidden and then you can proceed by choosing TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW.
February 24th, 2008 20:42
Does this work for iPod Classic?
February 24th, 2008 10:56
Thank you so much for the help, I was here swearing off Vista for the 100th time today and then I saw Rahul’s reply, thanks : ) Linux here I come…

I have windows vista (which I am learning to hate) and I cannot follow the directions in this article.
How do I get to the ” Tools -> Folder Options -> View,”
Nothing happens when I right click in the toolbar area of the windows and the folders are all configured differently than the XP windows.
Can anyone help??
February 17th, 2008 07:35
AWESOME!
saved all my music
this rocks
February 15th, 2008 06:27
How do I get to tools>folder options>view
February 12th, 2008 15:02
Sara,
What OS do you have?
I was a little puzzled because its blatant on XP and everything else (tools) but on vista i couldn’t find it immediately. If you have vista, you click the arrow next to organize on the top left and go to folder and search options. click that and hit the view tab, and down in all that stuff youll find the show hidden files box.
February 10th, 2008 06:38
THANKS SO MUCH ! this is great ! i tried downloading some software to copy my songs from my ipod to my computer and it did nothing. this, i feel, is the greatest and easiest way to transfer music back to your computer, and even if there is the 4-letter cryptic file names, it automatically read the song so i didn’t have to rename each and every one. THANKS AGAIN ! (:
February 9th, 2008 07:21
Thank you soooo much I was losing my temper with it and about to give up and now its all sorted
cheers!!
February 8th, 2008 14:14

I’m using Vista. I understand your directions. However, I can not open up my ipod as a portable hard drive? It tells me “Application not found.”
I have checked the box “manually manage music and videos” in itunes, and the box “enable disk use” is also checked, but it is in shadow.
Any suggestions?

Thank you so much, this really helped me save a lot of music.
September 22nd, 2007 04:56
When I try copy & paste it to my computer, after a few minutes of transferring I get a message saying that the parameter is incorrect. Then after that I get the same message every time I try to transfer any of the individual files (ie F05, F06, etc.). Any idea how to solve this?

July 20th, 2007 09:24
July 7th, 2007 04:08

Thank you sooooo much!!! I knew there had to be a way w/out paying $19.95. It worked perfectly. I recomend updating your Windows Media Player before attempting to import files from your Ipod.
February 23rd, 2007 01:53
I copied them to my computer, but when I go to play the songs from the ITUNES library the message “The song could not be found because the original file coud not be found. Whould you like to find it?” When I click Yes, it takes me to the Itunes Library with my old stored songs on my computer, but the new ones listed and trasnferred from the IPOD are not there. Any ideas what I did wrong ???
February 13th, 2007 11:14
thank you very much. I have been looking for this for a very long time now. Ever since my other computer crashed I have been trying to get all of my songs back and not download them all over again(more than 2000 songs). Again Thanks!

January 29th, 2007 07:02
I happened to be reading through these forums (ipod music transfer….) I realize that no one has mentioned another way which i found out for trying to help my friend with his dilemna. This method works for 1- computers with no iTunes and 2- older computers that will not work with the “show hidden files”. You can find everything in your ipod by running a search on your computer and changing search criteria to the Ipod drive, whatever it may be. leave the file name blank and hit search. Every folder on your ipod should come up. With some computers you might have to mess with the search criteria even more such as options and such. you can even connect 2,3,4 ipods and do simultanious searches. From there you can transfer from 1 ipod to another via drag and drop (do this at your own risk) But it is possible, I have done it. Well i hope this helps out at least somebody. It helped my friend who doesnt even own an ipod. I found out by sheer luck, i dont even like ipods, iRiver, iAudio, and Archos all the way.
January 23rd, 2007 00:33
omg thank you soo much this information has saved me hundreds of hours of trying to get all my ipod files onto my new computer.

January 12th, 2007 06:53

January 11th, 2007 16:36
THIS WORKS! I am a flight attendant and have my iTunes on my laptop at home in Seattle, but have all my movies and music on the desktop at the apartment in Newark. This allowed me to load up and go!!
Thank you so much!
and thanks for nothing Apple…

I tried other sites and they didn’t work, but finally, when all hope was lost, I found this site and it was so simple. I encourage people to use this method. Thanks so much!!!

[...] Similar to Apple iPod, Zune restricts or limits user ability to copy, transfer, upload or download of files, especially songs, musics, MP3s and videos between Zune and computer to protect the copyrights and reduce piracy. However, with a little trick and registry hack, you can enable visibility of Zune player in Windows system with limited hard disk support. [...]

What if I want to copy songs from my computer to iPod…do I also use this method? I’ve tried it and it doesn’t work. I have some songs on my work computer that I want to move to my iPod since I can’t install iTunes at work
December 3rd, 2006 13:00
Another entry: As I plow through the process (see previous entry), grey exclamation points appear in front of increasing numbers of songs. The grey exclamation points mean that iTunes cannot find the song. A search returns to the files with the cryptic 4-letter song title. Is this the best there is?
December 3rd, 2006 11:30
The technique is a good one. However, I have an iPod with about 1/6 of some 730 songs not on my computer. I find myself having to click on each song to get it to play thru iTunes, and delete it as I find that it is a duplicate song already on my computer, which is pretty tedious the more songs you have to go through. Even when I switched to “tiles” in Windows Explorer the files kept their cryptic 4-letter file names. Any ideas about how to streamline the process?
November 26th, 2006 14:17
Thanks for the help it was really easy to follow and made the process go fast.
November 24th, 2006 13:49

November 17th, 2006 07:54
This helped out so much! I’ve been trying to getmy songs from my iPod to my new computer since August, but I haven’t figured it out… until now. Thank you.
November 14th, 2006 11:26

Oulios

you have no idea the grief you saved me by writing this article! after my hard drive crashed, my ipod was the only piece of hardware holding over 15 gb of music. i tried some third party programs to upload the music from my ipod, but these programs (Tansee, IpodRip) kept failing to copy hundreds of my songs. your method worked perfectly, i retrieved every single one of my songs back, and i am extremely grateful for your help! thank you, and keep writing helpful articles like this.
