Internet Explorer 7 Pop-Up Blocker Blocks Script Generated Drop Down or On Page Input Dialog Boxes

Next generation web browser from Microsoft - Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is scheduled to be released by end of 2006, which will also be integral part of Windows Vista, Microsoft has released several beta version of IE7 for public testing, and has since released Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3. One of the most important feature of Internet Explorer 7 is enhanced and improved security.

With IE7, you may notice that whenever you click on a drop down or drag down boxes in the form or web page that launches a new valid web page or input dialog, the IE7 Pop-Up Blocker will block the function of the control. The similar Pop-Up Blocked issue also happens when you click a link or control that prompt and pop-up input dialog boxes that are generated by scripting. When this happen, IE7 will show “Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options click here…” in the information bar.

The problem with the script generated input dialog boxes is that IE7 will block all of them regardless of your Pop-up Blocker settings, even if you include the URL link location in the “Address of website to allow” section, or even after you disable and completely turn off the IE 7 Pop-up Blocker in order to allow all pop-ups.

When you click on the warning message at IE7 Information Bar, you can choose the option of Temporarily Allow Pop-ups (noted that there is no Always Allows Pop-up from This Site option) to temporarily allow the input dialog boxes to show up. But another issue to this solution is that if you’re in the middle of typing a long list of article (such as writing your blog using WordPress HTML editor), selecting Temporarily Allow Pop-ups option will reload and refresh the page, which may cause all unsaved entry to lose permanently.

The input dialog boxes blocker security feature is designed help protect your security online, as these input dialog boxes are often used to spoof input fields on legitimate websites. So it’s blocked regardless of general Pop-up Blocker settings. However, you can allow input dialog boxes generated by scripting from specific websites, by adeding the sites into your Trusted Sites zone in Internet Explorer 7. To do this:

  1. Go to Tools in Internet Explorer 7, then click on Internet Options.
  2. Go to Security tab.
  3. Select the Trusted sites zone.
  4. Click on Sites on launch the panel to manage trusted sites.
  5. Key in the specific site that you want to trust and allow all pop-ups including script-generated input dialog boxes to the text box for “Add this site to the zone”. If you’re viewing the website that you want to trust, the URL link location will be shown automatically.
  6. Click Add when done. Note that if the website is not encryted with SSL, you need to unclick (unselect) “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone” before you can Add the normal http: websites.
  7. The website should listed on the middle box Website listing.
  8. Click Close and then OK to exit.

The website will now no longer be blocked any elements, be it normal webpage pop-ups or dialog boxes. You may need to restart the browser for the new setting to take effect.

    We had the same problem.
Adding the url as a trusted site and setting the security to Medium-Low took care of it.

Is this not a major problem? We have been notified that all the sites we have developed suffer from this. Basically making any form completely unusable!
