Remove Ads from Windows Live Messenger with A-Patch and Customize Messenger Options and Visualisation

Windows Live Messenger is an major upgrade and replacement to MSN Messenger series of popular IM client from Microsoft. Thus previously Windows Live Messenger also called MSN Messenger 8 and the new version features a lot of new features and more intuitive interface. However, the advertisements shown on the main window and the chat windows (message windows) of Windows Live Messenger is pretty annoying. There are few ways to remove, disable and get rid of the ads on Windows Live Messenger so that the messenger is ads free.

The easiest way is to download A-Patch, which is actually an utility to customize visual and functionality aspects of Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger. There are more than 70 options and configurations currently available and A-Patch now supports MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger version 8.0.0787 & 8.0.0792 in A-Patch 1.3.0 RC1 (build 37). Build 54 of A-Patch 1.3.0 RC1 increases support to Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0787, 8.0.0792, 8.0.0812, 8.1.0064, 8.1.0066, 8.1.0068, 8.1.0106, 8.1.0168 & 8.1.0178.

Direct download link: A-Patch 1.3.0 RC1 (build 54a) for Windows Live Messenger.

To disable and remove Windows Live Messenger ads, just extract and execute the A-Patch executable.

  1. Exit from Windows Live Messenger.
  2. If you’re first time running A-Patch, you will be prompted Advance Options screen. Just click OK to select the default.
  3. On the Welcome window (page 2), select “Patch Messenger” under “Choose an Option”, and make sure the path to the Windows Live Messenger is correct (default should be C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger which is shown automatically, unless you change your installation directory, otherwise leave it as it is.).
  4. Click Next.
  5. Click Next again.
  6. On the Contact List window (page 5), select the “Remove Advertisement” option (4th or 5th option, depending on how you count).
  7. Click Next.
  8. Click Next again.
  9. Click another Next again.
  10. In the Instant Messege window, select the “Remove Advertisement” option (last row).
  11. Click Next.
  12. Click Next again.
  13. Click another Next again.
  14. Now, click on Apply to remove the ads on Windows Live Messenger.
  15. You will be prompted to make sure you’re running the patch on a clean unmodified installation of MSN Messenger, and ensure that Windows Live Messenger has closed. Click on OK to continue.

Not malware – of course not – you won’t notice anything wrong with your computer. Maybe though, you’ll notice something wrong with your bank accounts when the software you’ve just installed captures your banking login details and sends it off to someone in China/Russia/Romanania. Goog Luck. Oh what’s that you don’t using your computer for internet banking – lucky !

the malware it contains is probably harmless, and the avg scanner for a free product is good but ails in comarrion to sophos

i have since researched the malware and it doesnt have any disastorous affects

there is a grey area between spyware and virus’s i guess… by definition telstra’s sensis software is malware and CA internet security picks it up as such, i am using the apatch thing now on my eeepc and its good to have a little screen realestate back… but i wouldnt be putting it on my pc at work just yet i guess…. hell if its open source software ill write out the bugs in it, for the time being though

well ive been using it for months and havent had any issues with viruses or malware, my virus software thinks the google taskbar and realestate.com.au searchbox are malware… I figure its got to do something malicious to remove the ads but I’m happy with it. I am running AVG and I recently scanned the zip file again just to see if it picks up anything, and it doesnt.. Im happy with AVG – but yeah i guess you are right not to install it if your antivirus software complained about it. Has anyone else found the same problem? I would remove it straight away if someone agrees with you.. but man I love using MSN without ads. Havent found anything out there that works except this…

This is a bullshit because of it’s misconception, God is God allah is allah, don’t confuse christianity with your jizzlam. People will not convert to a 1400 years of cult because you have violated terms of a im software and marked everywhere with racist arab transliterate term “Allah” both on your illegal site and software. Keep your illegal muslim hands out of christ software while preaching about nonexistent “Allah”.

Here’s hoping it is now stable. A 100% improvement either way. Ads are for chumps. :) Otherwise it is back to trillian. :D

If all you are trying to do is hide / block / remove / disable ads in MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger, there is a much easier approach:

Add rad.msn.com to your Restricted Sites in Internet Explorer
