MSI MS-1013 Review by NotebookReview

NotebookReview reviewed MSI MS-1013 notebook computer which is the barebone version of MSI MegaBook S270. MSI 1013 supports latest AMD Mobile CPUs Athlon™ 64 and Turion™64 processor, and comes with 12.1″ Anti-Glare WXGA TFT, ATI X200M GPU, and DVD Dual-Layer burner.
Notebook Review concluded that there is no other offering by any company which supports an AMD Turion 64 in such a small package at a very reasonable price. Despite the some set backs, I am happy with this notebook.
Pros:
Only Ultra Portable available which supports AMD MT Turion processors
12.1″ WXGA 1280 by 800 resolution screen
Built in DVD DL RW
Alphabet keys are full sized
Bluetooth available
Excellent value
Exceptional performance
Cons:
Keyboard has poor feeling on keys and lacks proper key pickup
3 hour battery life with 8 cell battery
No S-Video out
Optical drive is fixed, no modular bay
Light leakage on screen
Screen ripples easily
Kensington slot offers little security

[...] The cost of this machine was $964.99 plus state use tax. Shipping was free. I’d say this is quite reasonable for a Free computer from a major firm that offers high performance and fairly high quality construction. There are other options which will let you buy a machine free of the Microsoft tax. Check out (10) for one. Because I wanted XP Home as a secondary resource, and because I read some reviews (here is one (11)) on this machine that weakened my resolve) I passed this time. I appreciate that the review is subjective. [...]

Despite the review, the conclusion that the DVD-RW drive is fixed and therefore cannot be removed is inaccurate. Not only can the drive be removed, but it can be replaced universally. ANY DVD-RW DRIVE WILL FIT THIS UNIT!
The only downsides I hacve determined with this model is that it is a SKT754 AMD and therefore limited in its upgrade capabilities. A Dual Core Turion is definitely out of the question. The Glare reflective screen washes out easily in sunlight. Aside from those negative aspects, this is an excellent example of MSI’s commitment to designing a powerful unit at respectible pricing.
