Remove and Uninstall Windows Messenger

Windows Messenger is an instant messaging program that built-in to Windows XP, and thus, comes shipped with each and every copy of Microsoft Windows XP operating system. There is also a Windows Messenger service built-in in Windows XP that helps produce pop up ads via IP addresses. The two programs are completely different and seperate though they have almost the same name.

Windows Messenger will loaded whenever you boot up your Windows XP PC or launches Outlook Express, Outlook or Remote Assistance that have been tightly integrated with Windows Messenger. Luckily, the Windows Messenger chat program can be removed and uninstalled.

1) Make sure Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Windows Messenger and other programs are not running, or else stop them. Note that the Windows Messenger must be unloaded from system tray too.
2) Click on Start -> Run.
3) Cut and paste the following command into the Run text line:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

4) Click on OK.

5) Double click (or right click and then click modify) this new (Hide Messenger) registry entry and set the value to 2.

    go to C:\Program Files\Windows Live
you should see a folder that says Messenger, simply delete it. if you can’t do that, download a freeware (search it on google) Ccleaner
and you will be able uninstall it that way, also the program, Ccleaner, can remove the registry of msn messenger, its a cleaning tool, hope that helps

Hi Sonny, there is a more easy solution you can try. Usually if a program doesn’t appear on add/remove program I will find some other uninstallers as a substitute. Been using Final Uninstaller quite a while with no problems. You can download one from http://www.finaluninstaller.com/ and have a try.

There are a few things you can try Sonny. Firstly I noticed with the new beta windows live messenger unlike the older versions it doesn’t actually appear in add/remove programs. What you are looking for is Windows Live Installer click the remove button on that and you will be able to choose which components you want to uninstall. If this is not present try reinstalling the beta version and try to remove again. If you get problems after this you can try Windows Installer Clean Up to find and remove any entry of Windows Live software. I hope this helps. Also if anyone is having problems with opening messages from the taskbar I found that my BitDefender Total Security was causing problems so be aware that Windows Live and BitDefender don’t get on. At least not in my case.

    1. If you haven’t done so already, upgrade to the latest version of MSN Messenger:
    http://messenger.msn.com/download
    2. The date on your computer needs to be set properly — double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
    3. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it’s possible
that Messenger doesn’t have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
    if this is the case.
    4. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger — try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn’t causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
    5. Check your IE Security settings — open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that “Check
for server certificate revocation” is unchecked. Also verify that ‘Use SSL 2.0′ and Use SSL
3.0′ is checked, then click OK.
    6. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
    regsvr32 softpub.dll
    then click OK
and do the same for the following:
    regsvr32 wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 initpki.dll
    regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
